So, unless you can go into the sound card's control panel, and switch the output to digital, the Boston's won't work with your standard headphone output jack. So, you'd 1st need to buy USB Audio 'stick' type external sound card, that offered a digital out. But most USB audio cards offer optical digital out, and you need coax digital. I'm confident from what I read at HP that there is simply no digital output on your laptop. Therefore, a driver update cannot possibly help. Creative labs does, or did, make an external soundcard (SB0530) that you could use.This is where the problem lies. If the speaker system was functioning properly before the system upgrade and both green lights are illuminated, there is likely nothing wrong with your speakers. You need to make sure that the soundcard is configured for digital output. If the soundcard is configured for digital or if your computer manufacturer has informed you that you need to upgrade drivers in the system, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your soundcard for these drivers. My wife and I have several different pairs of Boston PC speakers, and all of them sound great. As such, that's why I think you won't regret getting your pair playing again. Simple to do, as adam stated: USB from the laptop into the Fanmusic. The adapter then plugs into the mini-jack on the BA735 speakers. While the RCA Plug to 3.5mm Mono Jack Adaptor could plug directly into the coax output of the Fanmusic, I don't thing it would give you room to plug it into the Boston's without the extra RCA cable in between. Adding the RCA cable just gives you some extra cable length, to allow you to snake the cable to the speakers. Once you have everything connected, when you boot your laptop, Windows XP should automatically install USB drivers for the Fanmusic. Instead, with my old school component system, I've hooked up these dinky bookshelf speakers that came with the Onkyo CS-445 mini system. So the CS-445 system is in the bedroom with the Wharfedales, while the better component system is in its rightful place in the living room, but with the Onkyo speakers. I know that's a really screwed up arrangement, and wacky of me to do it. Onkyo may be a good brand, and this system has good reviews and may be a good choice among its peers, but the bottom line is that the speakers are nothing close to satisfying; not at all. While you could, as suggested earlier, run them from a CD player's coax digital output, you couldn't match volume levels, between 2 sets of speakers, without changing volume of each set of speakers individually. i.e. Turn one set up or down, then use the BA735's volume knob to match it to the other speakers. I was under the impression that the 3.5mm plug was hard-wired to the speakers and that's why I said you needed an RCA 3.5mm adapter. Actually, the speakers have an RCA input on them. So, you should be able to use an ordinary RCA RCA cable to connect the speakers to the DIGITAL output on a CD player, DVD player, or the USB converter I mentioned. As Stimpy said, the BA speakers will not be compatible with your old-school system. The important thing to remember is that those speakers must be connected to a digital output. Just because the plug fits doesn't mean they'll work, as you discovered with the laptop. One other thing. Both of your stereo systems are compatible with the output of your laptop. I found a New Old Stock set and bought them, BUT it was not compatible with my PCs, even though the other BA735 speakers worked great with these PCs. After closer examination, I realized that the BA735 speakers I had all these years had both digital and analog inputs and as it turns out, I always used the analog outputs on my PCs and ran into the analog inputs on my BA735. When I bought the replacement set, it only had digital inputs. It works! Sounds amazing! However, if I knew that Boston Acoustics changed the BA735 design and made it only digital and that they made a purely analog set called the BA745, I would have just bought a set of BA745 speakers. I think that the analog sounds even better and that is what most PC audio outs are; analog. I have owned or used four different sets of BA735's, one of which came as original equipment on a nice Gateway system. JUST SOME of these Malaysia-built units are also equipped with an Analog input on the subwoofer (usable with iPods, laptops, and the like), while others are STRICTLY DIGITAL and require a coaxial or mini-jack (not optical) digital output on the sound source. If you need one with Analog, be sure to confirm with your seller that the system in question has the dual inputs. There are absolutely no other differences between these two BA735 variants.
