If exhaust temperatures are naturally high enough to oxidize soot in the particulate filter, regeneration will occur during highway driving or heavy load conditions. This is called passive regeneration. If exhaust temperature is not high enough for passive regeneration, active regeneration will occur, and a small amount of fuel is injected into the exhaust stream.Under some operating conditions, the engine may not have the opportunity to regenerate the DPF and stationary (parked) regeneration would be required. Stationary (parked) regeneration requires operator interaction. Refer to the Vehicle Operator’s manual for specific regenerations procedures. For regeneration to occur, the ECM must detect DPF restriction by monitoring temperature and pressure sensors. SCR uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in order to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust stream to nitrogen and water. A dosing valve is used to inject DEF into the exhaust stream.
