field guide to urban wildlife common animals of cities suburbs how they adaptIs there any trick to doing this. I'm very hit and miss(mostly miss) when I use it. And I'd like to be much more accurate with it. I need it for some subjects. With birding there is a need to refocus on the bird not the branches or leaves. Tough. It is a bit easier with the sx50 than the sx40. The 50 allows you to press up and down on the four-way controller for larger movements, as well as spinning the dial. Pain. The 40 just the spinning. There are some other models that have an easier focus method. The P900 allows you to use the zoom lever, easier but not much more effective. The panny I believe uses the control wheel, horizontal, seems easier, have not confirmed efficacy. There are some with a focus ring I believe. Course, BIF makes this a bit hard. You can adjust the viewing and the magnification, however, I do not know what is best. Not sure what combination will allow you to see focus and achieve it better. I do not know what combination of viewing and help will allow one to achieve and realize fine-tune focus. Some eyes are different. This forum has the ability to get this answer. I patiently await. If you do not defeat the Safety MF in the menu, the camera will refocus once you depress the shutter release. Manual focus on the SX50 is really intended more to get the camera in the general direction of focus. The SX60 also has focus peaking which is another assist in achieving proper manual focus. Still,. For what they do well, they are great but they do not take the place of the more competent camera in all cases. How long did it take you to learn to do it well enough to count on it? It is clumsy but sometimes doable. In addition to those restraints, it is difficult to know if the focus is exact. Partly eyes, partly evf and other issues.window.parent.OnUploadCompleted(201,"/userfiles/feature-comforts-heater-manual-hc-0104s(1).xml">http://accessiblevehicleservices.com/text/javascript">window.parent.OnUploadCompleted(201,"/userfiles/feature-comforts-heater-manual-hc-0104s(1).xml

It is done with the buttons on the back. I had to use it a lot on some tide pool shots recently. Its unbelievable that the store salesperson did not know this. Thank you very much. I saved it because I need help with MF and her explanation seems easy enough for me to follow It's for the SX40 but should be the same for the SX50 The viewfinder just isn't good enough for accurate manual focus. I just put the camera on tripod and sit back on the couch with my 9' wired remote, watch the birdies and push the button. The juncos tend to get frisky about mid-afternoon. Nearly impossible, though, to go up and re-set focus after every shot. It always reverts back to auto-focus as soon as I release the button. Then she's locked in. Great to know I can set it as a shortcut. Will look into that, as I have the manual open in another tab This one is horribly framed (why can't they fight in the middle of the frame??? Makes it so much easier), and fastish shutter only works at ISO1600, so grainy as hell. Thanks for the help folks! Head to your manual with your camera in hand and review the focus section, which you can find in the index. The SX50's manual focus options are fairly crude and by the time you get the focus on a bird, it's probably gone. A small bird against a large background will cause a fully Auto SX50 to choose the larger background as the right choice. You'll need to move to one of the creative shooting modes to get the most from the SX50. Use your zoom to put as much of the subject image in the frame of the camera for better success with the SX50. That may require a tripod or monopod if camera shake becomes a problem at longer focal ranges. You'll be using the Shortcut button which sits up close to the viewfinder. Build your Custom shooting modes with this setting included and then shoot in a Custom mode built for birds. Out of, say, a half dozen shots, there's a better chance one will get the bird in good focus if there's any movement. And, really, why would you take a picture of a bird that was no longer moving? I'll definitely study up on your suggestions. I've been shooting birds (among other stuff) for a couple years and change now, preceded by an SX10is for another 4 years. I admit, I do often shoot in auto mode, but when I want to stop, or at least slow action, I revert to shutter priority or full manual, depending on conditions. I also use it, rather than binoculars, for bird IDs. Zoom in even past the 50x and get a shot of a far away critter. And I will heed your advice and look at your links. I'll figure out how to beat this thing into submission I'll definitely study up on your suggestions. Just like the other Canon Powershot SX-series, the SX50 remains seen to look stunning in the form of a DSLR-style body and a wide 24mm lens that now can zoom 50x optical zoom, better than the previous SX40HS series that features the optical zoom 35x. The zoom capability of the lens is also more optimal with the presence of visual image stabilization features that will significantly reduce vibration when using it at maximum zoom position. Tracing the inside of the body, you will find the 12.1-megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor and the DIGIC V processor with the support of the HS System technology. This prosumer camera provides a reasonably complete ISO option of up to ISO 6400 and can produce as much as 10 frames per second for shooting fast-paced action. On the back are a flexible, 2.8-inch 461.000-point, adjustable LCD display, and an electronic viewfinder for shooting photos. The Canon Powershot SX50HS also comes with the Zoom Framing Assist feature first present on Canon SX500IS, and Canon SX 160 IS that is useful for accelerating Framing and determining focus when the lens is at its maximum Zoom position. To simplify your shooting activities, Canon Smart Auto mode options, Scene modes, and filter effects can also be added to the camera. Canon SX50 HS MANUALS. I know not to trust specs alone but to say either of these cameras have a useful manual focus would seem to be a stretch too far. This very basic, IMO, level of creativity simply does not seem to exist in the true PS category, even in P mode. After about a week with the 520, however, I was thinking I was far more likely to be breaking out the DSLR than I would be using the 520 if I really wanted some slightly better than average results on even a day to day basis. (I'm fine with the small sensor in these cameras and understand the improvements which could be had with the DSLR. I just don't want to carry the larger and more expensive package of body and lenses and filters, etc, etc with me all the time. I live in a fairly big city and I'm not keen on constantly advertising I have a lot of camera gear which could belong to someone else with a few unkind words or deeds. The cost of the SX50 is, IMO, the limit for what might publicly be lifted from my possession at any time. Now, to my question regarding manual focus on the SX50. The LCD screen on the SX520 was not sufficiently detailed to make manual focus even remotely useful on the 520. And, really, neither the LCD nor the (more desirable) EVF on the SX50 seem to have enough resolution to allow for really tweaking the focus to my personal preference. It may also be fooled by the background items when I'm trying to focus on the wildlife (getting sharp focus on, for example, an eye) which is sitting surrounded by the background. I have a great zoom capability with the SX50 but it does me little to no good if the camera will decide where to focus. My preference is to stay with Canon so suggestions of other manufacturers will be considered but aren't very likely to be acted upon in the near future. Thanks in advance for your assistance. But if you're planning to shoot wildlife with the MF in sx50, I've got bad news for you. The good news is that I'm fairly certain that you can control the manual focus.umm.manually! I've done it plenty of time for static objects by switching to the manual focus mode and then using the command dial to change the focus. It's a long and tiring process, you have to rotate the dial many times to get the focus from one end to the other but it's possible. I was actually considering getting the SX60 by selling the sx50, it's an even greater camera from what I've seen so far. But the truth is that I hardly ever use it anymore since the day I've went the slr way. But if you're planning to shoot wildlife with the MF in sx50, I've got bad news for you. But the truth is that I hardly ever use it anymore since the day I've went the slr way.Good work! However, I don't think I understand your response. I'm aware of the limitations of the rather slow lens speed and the size of the sensor in the SX50. I use a tripod when necessary so the lens speed may not be a significant issue, we'll see as I work more with the SX50. With fixed objects the ISO of 80 should help somewhat IMO. The processing in the SX50 does seem to give images a better overall look that what I can see from the SX520's system. Not DSLR quality, but a step in the right direction. There are a few advantages to the SX50 though, even over my DSLR. But neither can I easily afford that lens for my DSLR. It's a trade off that I'm willing to accept in certain situations. Same with the macro shots. This for that and what I get is what I will accept. As long as the camera doesn't fight me along the way. Therefore, you didn't see higher quality results until you began using a DSLR which allowed for more precise control. Would that be right? I'm confused.
