Home of the Altezza Club.As the years go by and more people wrap Altezza?s around poles and are damaged in natural events such as the Christchurch earthquake I believe it will become more affordable to buy a automatic Altezza and do a manual coversion. Step 1) Buy the parts for a Manual Convesion. Toyota J160 6 Speed Gear Box. Manual gear box plug.Manual Gear Box Crossmember. Manual Pedal Box ? Manual Speedo (Important as the rev limit changes ect). Such as: ? Buy a Low KM gear box so has lots of life, check it nicely shifts gears before removed if possible. ? Make sure the manual pedal box springs are good. ? Altezza?s come with a dual mass flywheel from the factory, Toyota charged over 2k for a new kit and fitting. Step 2) When you have all the parts and you are happy with them, it?s a very straight forward swap. The first thing to do is drill a hole through the firewall for the clutch pedal, important to do this step first as cannot be done later on. Do not modify the automatic cross member as this is considered structural so you would need a certification if you did that. Using OEM parts requires no cert, saving you hundreds. I can?t be more descriptive at this point because I got my mechanic to install it for me, but everything is very plug and play as it all just bolts up. If anyone can be more descripted send me a PM with what to put in and I will swap it out. Step 4) Swap the automatic ECU over for the manual one, I ran the automatic ECU on the manual gearbox for a week, drove like crap, it really needs the manual one, livened up the whole engine. Step 5) Enjoy your manual Altezza. If you have any questions please send me a PM, I will try pin this topic, but if you have anything that would be good to add or spot an error. Autos don't need them. We did this on our auto KE70, and changing the pedal box was a dog. Dash had to come out first. I did it for the same reason, all the manual KE70s have been thrashed to death by young hoons now, and all the nice ones are autos that granny has owned. Yeah, the same type of thing happened with changing the pedal box in the altezza hence I said do it first, I got manual dash, manual steering wheel and all that put in as well so it had to come off anyway, but yes was told it was a dog of a job. Yeah, same reason, my car was owned by a great owner, full service history no issues and its just performed wonderfully since the conversion. Misaligned pedals feel weird and look nasty. You will need a sharp dot punch, holesaw and a deburrer or mini file for this. - Trans Tunnel on the auto does not have the hump required for the shifter to fit. I cut a small section out and made up a plate so that the shifter boots fitted properly, which added an hour or two to the job but makes for a nice job. Wiring: Use a manual ECU if at all possible, the auto ecu will be lazy. Need to connect these so the car will start. - Wire up the speed sensor. Speedo reading on dash comes from ABS system, but car will be very lazy without the SPD signal to the ecu.Really need this as the car will be doughy and guzzle fuel without it connected. I dont understand what you mean by the ecu having a homo lol i read the auto beams has lower compression, thats ok, still nearly 60hp up from worn out 18RG Removing all transmission inputs and outputs from the ecu will definitely qualify as a major failure and put the ecu in to limp mode. If it was just some minor inputs missing(like output speed sensor) may just lower the RPM cut on the engine by a couple of hundred RPM, but missing the input speed sensor is enough to make the ecu lock timing at full retard and limit the rpm to 3000 to try and save the transmission. Plug and play or do i need the harness too? Should see decent power gains. Alternatively, you can quickly login with Facebook. A guy on the ACNZA forums brought a car that had been converted. He had all sorts of issues, mainly to do with the ECU. Maybe if you got a piggyback ECU like a Greddy E-Manage you could tune out the problems. Available models and variations The “J160” is the identification code as used by Toyota for their variants of the AZ6 6-speed gearboxes. There were two main types of J160 pending on if they were used behind the 1GFE or the 3SGE Beams engines. Otherwise they are identical. Furthermore there were some small changes between an early and late type on both of these types. Despite having the same “AZ6” model code from Aisin there is not that much in common between those as used on Toyota’s and other manufacturers. In terms of compatibility it reminds to be seen which parts can be interchanged as even the housings vary between makes, for example the front bellhousing section from a Toyota model will not bolt to the middle housing as sourced from a Nissan. One modification that’s known to work well is to use the 6th gear-set sourced from the Nissan S15 AZ6 gearbox and fit into one of the Toyota gearboxes. The J160 uses originally uses a 0.869:1 ratio compared to the Nissan gear-set with it’s 0.767:1 ratio. This results in lower engine revs for the same vehicle speed during the use of the 6th gear. However the limiting factor in the strength of any of the AZ6 gearboxes is apparently not the gears directly but rather a 2-part thrust washer. The shaft for this thrust washer is only cut part of the way into the gear teeth and under high load they can chip the edge of the teeth and cause a complete failure. Crossmember mount To fit the J160 into a vehicle not designed for a new gearbox crossmember will need to be used. These are either custom made to suit or potentially purchased from custom parts suppliers. The original J160 rubber mount is original reused however something with a lower profile can instead be fitted if required. For extra clearance a spacers can be added between the car body and the gearbox crossmember. We offer a drop in speedo drive to interface with the traditional speedo cable drive. Another option is to use this digital output directly into a digital dash module. Gearstick position Most J160 gearboxes have 2 different positions available. These can switched between by moving the main shifter housing to the other set of mounting bosses and reversing the cast iron rear piece on the shaft. The issue is that even with the forward position used it’s still far too rearward for almost all conversions. This may well pose a clearance issue when fitting into a car such an AE86. It also requires the right equipment, skill and a large amount of time to do correctly. However there is a large amount of vacant space inside this housing at the top. So therefore providing enough room is left for the clutch and flywheel this area could be cut into for an extra space relief. For the thinner spacers this isn’t much of an issue but otherwise avoid where possible. In some cases such as the 4agze clutch kits the friction disk that is supplied happens to have a correct spline. When this is so both the pressure plate and friction disk (not thrust bearing) from an off the shelf clutch kit can be used as is. For all other applications either the pressure plate and the friction disk are individually ordered or the disk customised to have the correct spline. There are compatible clutch disks available with various diameters such as 200, 212(215), 225mm and likely others. In a conversion a custom unit with a different bearing may be required to be made up. Alternatively a concentric slave cylinder may possibly be used to replace the thrust bearing and the clutch fork, clip and slave cylinder.
