For the 1.4 million people in the United States who have lupus, an overactive immune system senses that different parts of the body do not belong, and it attacks these parts. The immune system may strike the cells that line the joints or tendons, for example, causing pain and swelling. An incredibly complex disease, lupus must be properly treated for the optimal health and well-being of the person who has it. The Lupus Encyclopedia is an authoritative compendium that provides detailed explanations of every body system potentially affected by the disease, along with practical advice about coping. People with lupus, their loved ones, caregivers, and medical professionals?all will find here an invaluable resource. Illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and tables, The Lupus Encyclopedia explains symptoms, diagnostic methods, medications and their potential side effects, and when to seek medical attention. Dr. Donald Thomas provides information for women who wish to become pregnant and advises readers about working with a disability, complementary and alternative medicine, infections, cancer, and a host of other topics. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. This book should stand the test of time as one of the great books about this complex auto-immune disease. ? Lupus, the Adventure Between the Lines I highly recommend The Lupus Encyclopedia. It's an amazing source of information, and I feel empowered by the fact that I have a reliable resource to turn to whenever I need it.http://www.reiki.mannaz.pl/userfiles1/everest-advanced-edition-manual.xml

No matter what your symptoms are or the level of severity, you owe it to yourself to get this book. ? Lupine Life The Lupus Encyclopedia is a book that that every lupus patient should have in their home library. This volume represents outstanding value for money and would be a useful addition to medical, healthcare and personal bookshelves. ? Reference Reviews We can't imagine a more thorough, readable guide to lupus than this. ? Pain-Free Living People who have lupus and their primary care doctors will find in this book all the information they need. -- from the Foreword by George C. Tsokos, M.D., Harvard Medical School Finally, an expert clinician who can explain a complicated medical condition using simple conversational English without glossing over important details or talking down to the reader. The information will be clear to anyone with a high school education and will also be helpful for medical professionals. I will be recommending this book to my patients with lupus and to anyone who wants to understand this illness better. -- Joan T. Merrill, M.D., Head, Clinical Pharmacology Research Program, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and Medical Director, Lupus Foundation of America An extremely thorough and readable volume reflecting enormous amounts of time, effort, and research. -- Daniel J. Miss Julie 5.0 out of 5 stars At this point I could probably write one of my own.http://www.demkar.nl/userfiles/everest-cpap-clinical-manual.xml But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean. But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information. However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not. I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.Only Lupus book you'll need Back then, most of them were written by people who had Lupus and they just told of their experience with it. Since Lupus does different things to different people, those books did not actually help me. I wanted to understand Lupus and how it pertained to me. I have had diagnosed Lupus for 24 years and it has wrecked havoc on my body. If I had understood some of the things that you can find in this book, I would have been better off. This book teaches many things I've learned the hard way and also some additional information. Examples as follows: Never have a live vaccine shot. It will activate the Lupus. The tests you need to have done and what they mean. Some people have a blood clotting problem with Lupus (I did). Some people have to avoid the sun. The sun can activate the Lupus. If so, take vitamin D. Problems that can happen with Lymph Nodes.Other diseases that you often have, in addition to Lupus. Types of medications that help and those that hurt. Pregnancy and Infertility. I could never start to tell all the things this book covers. It has 874 pages. I dearly wish I had this book when I first started with Lupus. Then I developed Ankylosing Spondylitis and Fibromyalgia. The book tells about those (and many more) too. You won't need any other book. This book is filled with information for anyone suffering with Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Hoshimoto's, and various other autoimmune disorders. I love how the author explained the medical side of an autoimmune disease for the lay person to understand. It is very well written and easy to understand. I love the different chapters on medications used to treat lupus, their side effects, as well as their benefits. This is a wonderful book. The Lupus Encyclopedia is well worth the read. The overview was enlightening, the information provided was detailed, but not overly medical. I'd purchased the ebook a few months back. At that time, I read the parts that were of most importance at the time. Now ready to read to full book, I purchased the physical copy. The book is 4lb and 875 pages of information that should have come from my doctor. This physical copy allows me to jot notes. I will take it to my next doctor visit. I found this book to be very informative. I would recommend this book to anyone with a want or need to know more about Lupus. I may even suggest that my doctor order a copy for herself!Author explains very complex medical information in understandable ways. Lupus is a very illusive, and misunderstood disease, even by most doctors. My wife was finally diagnosed properly 12 years ago, and has received excellent care from a rheumatology specialist who has greatly improved the quality of her life. Unfortunately, she went for another 15 years to doctors who did not recognize her symptoms, and diagnosed her with pretty much everything but Lupus. I wish we would have had a resource like this back then. Become informed, and seek out specialists who undersatnd Lupus and are up to date on state of the art treatments. After reading this book you will know more about Lupus than most of the doctors you see. We had two different doctors tell my wife that she was just depressed, and needed to get out in the sun more - Well, with Lupus, that is the worst thing you can do. Bottom line, educate yourself, and shop wisely for medical care, and this disease can be successfully managed. It is aimed at those of us who suffer the condition, those who look after those who suffer and health professionals. The book covers all forms of Lupus but concentrates on SLE which is the most common and most serious of the forms of Lupus. The book is divided into several sections and takes you through each point carefully and clearly. It talks about what Lupus is, how it affects people, what treatments are available, what possible side effects each drug and treatment may cause and the more practical side of living day to day with the condition. When one is first diagnosed with Lupus, there is real information overload. It is a very complicated condition and affects different people in different ways. This book allows someone to look carefully at their own situation and to inform themselves about how to cope and what to expect. It takes time to come to terms with Lupus and the condition can and does change over time, this is why this book is such a gold mine of information. There is just one slight downside to this book: it is written by an American specialist and is rather geared towards the American health care system which is much different to our own here in the UK. Some of the drugs have slightly different names and some of the advice in relation to demanding certain tests and procedures from your healthcare team may be an alien concept with the NHS however, the advice and general principles are sound. If you suffer from Lupus or care for someone who does, this book could well be the best investment you make. The author also runs a Facebook page with updates and extra information. This book is without doubt superb ana a must if you have this disease!!!
