This lack of attention to detail is disappointing. After paying for the book I would expect the author to do some basic and easy on-line research to see which agents accept new authors and or unsolicited queries. However, it is, in essence, a big giant phone book of literally agents, so you'll need to check the information in the book against the internet if you want to be sure that it's accurate. There's plenty of helpful advice as well as a full listing of agents and some hints about which agents are more likely to pick up your new novel than others. Word of advice, though, if you aren't ready to publish this week, or at least this year, don't waste the money. Only buy when your script is ready, and then seriously read it cover to cover and submit to as many places as possible. I've had several older copies of these Writer's Digest books and it doesn't take long for the information to be obsolete (say 2 years) so buy wisely.This books has much more information than how to find an agent. It also tells you what to look for in an agent, how to write a query letter, and how to meet agents at conferences. It also has a list of hundreds of writer's conference: when, where, and topics, and genre. A very handy book for any author who is just breaking into publishing his or her book.I'm a published non-fiction writer, so I should be able to get in the door somewhere--I'm just still trying to figure out, where.High recommend, especially to new writers trying to find representation.It's the industry standard publication for that purpose. If you’re thinking about getting a literary agent yourself, this is a great place to start. No idea how much different it is from every other year. But if an agent is able to look at a 140 character pitch and decide if they’d want to receive a query from you (nothing being promised, of course) you can consider yourself already one step out of the slush pile. And as a writer who has spent his entire professional career thus far inside the slush pile, anything that can edge me out of it for a chance to be seen read, is a tidbit well loved. There are sections within this guide for fiction and non-fiction proposals., query-writing, synopsis-tweaking, and even how to engage with your agent once you have signed with one (that last section must be in there for the laughs alone). In addition to these helpful sections, Though Chuck cannot take all the credit, as this edition features sections written by a number of other agents and authors. And while not every section held import to me, I found their varying perspectives to be equally informative and refreshing. Seeing where different agents would stop during a particular query was eye-opening. Things really are equal parts luck, taste, and skill. Ultimately, the 2017 guide is my first foray into these guides (as it is my first full year querying) so I cannot speak to any changes from previous years. As far as a tool for new writers, I can’t imagine that this is not worth its small price. The online functionality is likely worth the price alone. I received this book for free from Chuck Sambuchino. Most of this can be found online in thousands of articles and blogs, but it is very succinct here. My only issue is that with there being so many agent listings and print being so small, it is a lot of sifting through to find what you are looking for.
