Chilton Manuals are an affordable, reputable, reference source for owners who want to understand their vehicle better. IT BEGAN WITH AN AUSTIN 7 SPECIAL The Haynes-Chilton legacy began when John Haynes OBE wrote and published his first book about building an Austin 7 Special while still at school in 1956. He wrote two more special builders manuals while doing his National Service in the RAF. The first Haynes Manual for the Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite was published in 1965. Based on the teardown and rebuild of that project vehicle and with extensive use of step-by-step photographs—a process that has not changed to this day—this manual set the standard for many generations to follow. Haynes acquired the Chilton DIY brand in 2001, and the entire collection is now a powerhouse of information for DIYers. ATTENTION TO DETAIL What sets Chilton (and Haynes) Manuals apart is the attention to detail that goes into the production of each manual. Every manual is written from thorough hands-on experience based on a complete teardown, which is the step-by-step procedure for dismantling a vehicle or piece of equipment part-by-part. This is followed by the detailed rebuilding of the vehicle. Manual information is presented in a style that any DIYer can follow, even a beginner. DID YOU KNOW? Writing each manual takes 30 weeks, with authors working as teams to shorten the production time and to avoid fatigue during the difficult process. Hundreds of photographs accompany the step-by-step instructions. Genuine Parts AUTHORIZED SELLER We’re proud of our authorized seller status with dozens of global automotive aftermarket suppliers. The procedures contain many NOTES, CAUTIONS and WARNINGS which should be followed, along with standard procedures, to eliminate the possibility of personal injury or improper service which could damage the vehicle or compromise its safety. Carbon monoxide is poisonous; it takes a long time to leave the human body and you can build up a deadly supply of it in your system by simply breathing in a little every day. You may not realize you are slowly poisoning yourself. Many models utilize an interference-type, non-freewheeling engine. If the timing belt breaks, the valves in the cylinder head may strike the pistons causing potentially serious (also time- consuming and expensive) engine damage. Refer to the maintenance interval charts in the front of this manual for the recommended replacement interval for the timing belt, and to the timing belt section for belt replacement and inspection. General Information NOTE: For information on understanding electricity and troubleshooting electrical circuits, please refer to chassis electrical. Coil on Plug (COP) System The coil over plug system was developed so that spark and spark timing could be better controlled on an individual cylinder basis. As the ring rotates, the slots pass between the hall-effect switch, and alternately turns the voltage off and on. When a slot aligns with the hall-effect switch, the controller sees voltage on the signal line. Attach the clip to ground and crank the engine to check for spark. This spark tester has an adjustable air-gap for measuring spark strength and testing different voltage ignition systems. This spark tester is the easiest to use. Just place it on a plug wire and the spark voltage is detected; the bulb on the top will flash with each pulse. NOTE: The best way to perform this procedure is to use a spark tester (available at most automotive parts stores). The last type of spark plug tester looks like a spark plug with a grounding clip on the side, but there is no side electrode for the spark to jump. NOTE: The last two types of testers allow the user to not only detect the presence of spark, but also the intensity of the spark. Ignition coils. To Install: 1. The hall-effect switch is a three-wire device that must receive a power and ground. The hall-effect switch is used in conjunction with an interrupter ring with a series of slots or openings cut into it. General Information The starting system includes the battery, starter motor and solenoid, ignition switch, circuit protection and wiring connecting all of the components. An inhibitor switch located in the Transmission Range (TR) sensor is included in the starting system to prevent the vehicle from being started unless the transmission is in PARK. There are three area of the starter motor circuits that voltage drop test can be performed on. These include: The starter feed circuit The starter ground circuit The starter solenoid.
