The latest version of GIMP (2.8) brings long-awaited improvements and powerful new tools to make graphic design and photo manipulation even easier—but it's still a notoriously challenging program to use. The Artist's Guide to GIMP teaches you how to use GIMP without a tedious list of menu paths and options. Instead, as you follow along with Michael J. Hammel's step-by-step instructions, you'll learn to produce professional-looking advertisements, apply impressive photographic effects, and design cool logos and text effects. These extensively illustrated tutorials are perfect for hands-on learning or as templates for your own artistic experiments. Covers GIMP 2.8 Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. Your favorite Tool Option configurations can be saved as presets. Use the buttons at the bottom of the Tool Options dialog to save, load, and delete presets. Color tools can be added to the Toolbox using the Preferences dialog. Need quick access to layer functions. Right click on any layer in the Layers dialog. Hold Ctrl when using the Rotate tool to rotate layers in 15-degree increments. Using full-size layers when you don't need to can slow GIMP down. To remove transparent and unused regions of a layer, select and copy the area of interest and paste it into a new layer, then delete the original layer. This book, through examples and tutorials, goes through much of what the program has to offer and leaves you with the knowledge necessary to carry on on your own. It may not be the best book for one's first experience with this graphics software but it sure as hell should be the second.I only wish the author had spent more time on the artistic application of GIMP and less on Web design and the like. I would recommend that Mr. Hammel write an extensive book on the artistic application of GIMP; such a book is highly needed. He writes well and clearly. If you need it for reference on 'how to subjects' I can highly recommend it. Making new Brushes is easily followed and give instructions that even I could follow. It provides step by step tutorials that are easy to follow and help you see how different techniques of gimp can help you with your projects. In comparison with todays video tutorials I like written tutorials much better because you and mark the pace that suits you and your learning level. The book shows the navigation rutes that are easy to follow.I still don't have worked through all the tutorial but I always see that I can learn still very much from this book to get better results with gimp. Thank you for this great book.I am new at using the software and it was nearly impossible for me to figure it out before buying this book. It explains most things very well, especially layers, and I am looking forward to learning more from it. If you're new to Gimp, this book is a must-buy and is well worth the money! There are a lot of great, follow along tutorials in the book. I used the reflection technique on a book cover I made and it looks wicked cool.Whilst it runs through the tools etc at the beginning, it goes from there in a fairly steep learning curve with some heavy reading. Nicely produced book and great value if you can get a good condition second hand copy. I would recommend it.http://www.aktywa.com.pl/userfiles/eos500d-manual.xmlIt gives you a good overview into how to use GIMP to produce artistic digital content and covers all of the tools and methods required to do such. Everything is well laid out and clearly explained and it should work equally well for those new to GIMP or someone with prior experience (covering the basics early on, before moving on to more advanced methods). My only criticism is that it feels fairly dated throughout. I was hoping (given the publication date was 2012) that it would give an overview into using GIMP for producing modern-looking web and print content. It seems a bit of a missed opportunity, for me, as most of the examples and illustrations look like they are from the late 90s or early to mid 2000s. As the publication date is recent, I can only assume that mainly parts of the text were edited to work with the latest edition (2.8) of GIMP. That said, though, with a bit of thought, you can translate the teachings given (which are very good) to create more modern-looking content, it just seems a shame that it looks so dated and uninspiring (compared to modern Photoshop books).Contents laid out in a logical sequence starting with fundamental techniques and moving on to more sophisticated ones. Instructions very clear and make good use of screen grabs. Looking forward to getting further into it.It uses a series of projects to introduce the key elements of the world's best free bitmap design software, each of which have been cleverly designed to fuel your own creative juices. Above everything else this book proves beyond doubt that GIMP is not simply a poor-man's Photoshop (although with Adobe forcing people into a cloud based subscription this is not a bad thing!), it is a powerful creative tool which can breathe new life into your photography and graphic design projects.Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. MacBradaigh 4.0 out of 5 stars I was impressed and surprised (in a good way) on the depth of tutorials in this book. I was really looking for something that would give me a good overview of using GIMP from the top, and was surprised at how many things you can do creatively that I hadn't even thought of. My only criticism is the paper used is flat and it would be nice to have something a little glossier for the images. The images are in color, which is nice though. I've used photoshop and now GIMP from probably a pretty basic level (I'm not a graphic artist) for album coverwork for compilation CD's for myself and friends, posters, and just playing around with abstract art to frame and hang on my own wall. I've been impressed with GIMP as an alternative to Photoshop and I think this book is a great companion to help me get the most out of it. If you've tried GIMP, which is free to download, and want to get more out of it, I would recommend this book.Still a good reference and provides good tips. The projects presented in the book really help you familiarize yourself with the various functions and tools available to you. They also help build your confidence so that you can start creating your own techniques.I now understand what can be done with GIMP and have some step-by-step examples to use as a template. GIMP is capable of doing much more than I will ever use but the book is easy to parse in to the topics which interest the reader. Don't be intimidated by the title. It's a little dated now though. Also, the book's author has additional lessons online. The only down side to this book is that GIMP has been updated since the book came out and so the book is a little behind, but it is still worthwhile if you are new to GIMP or looking for new things to do in GIMP Nice book to learn to use Gimp from a more artistic and design point of view than just editing photography. Battery life is not great on the 170 Series compared to some of the other Fluke ranges, such as the 80 series, at around 200 hours of nominal usage. This makes the surge protection well up into the kV range. Fuse protection is 440mA for the milliamp input and 11A for the 10A input. They are high quality HRC fuses that are accessible by getting into the case. While it is undoubtedly a fine piece of kit with nice lines, speed, accuracy and functionality, it is the base model and loses out on its lack of display backlight. For sharper accuracy and a backlight, the 177 has that, while the Fluke 179 also does temperature. Register now! Every Fluke Digital Multimeter gives you what you need: accurate measurements; consistent, reliable performance; attention to safety. You can find problems fast with all the basic troubleshooting measurements such as frequency, capacitance, resistance, continuity, and diode. And Display Hold and Auto Hold will help you capture significant events. These can trigger a sequence of events that may lead to serious injury. This is why test equipment must be designed to protect people who work in this high-Voltage high-current environment. The fluke 175 esfp true RMS digital multimeter is compact, rugged, reliable, and easy to use. Unlike averaging meters, which can accurately measure only pure sinewaves, true RMS meters accurately measure distorted waveforms. Calculating true RMS converters require a certain level of input voltage to make a measurement. The ac voltage and current ranges are specified from 5-Percent of range to 100-Percent of range. The selectable ac filter (smoothing mode) helps display a steadier reading when the input signal is changing rapidly or is noisy. Because the bar graph updates about 40 times per second, which is 10 times faster than the digital display, the bar graph is useful for making peak and null adjustments and for observing rapidly changing inputs. The min max avg recording mode captures the minimum and maximum input values, and calculates a running average of all readings. When a new high or low is detected, the meter beeps. The external accessible battery is easy for battery changes. The 175 runs about 200 hours without backlight on one 9-Volt battery (included). Also included are a user's manual and a set of test leads. An optional accessory is the 80bk-a integrated DMM temperature probe with a measurement range up to 260-degrees Celsius. The 175 meets cat iii and cat iv IEC 61010 standards. The fluke 175 esfp true RMS digital multimeter is sold one item per package. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Amazon Customer 5.0 out of 5 stars The Leads could use some improvement, very stiff and don't look or feel like real Fluke leads (but they are). For the price, I expect them to come with way better test leads, but they are just adequate enough. I was also disappointed to find that this model didn't have a backlight, but that was my fault not reading far enough before I bought it.
