Chris Austin 3.0 out of 5 stars There is some good news: (1) Because this series is so well-established, you will find plenty of supplementary materials such as study aids and answer keys for this series. (2) For the same reason, it's also easy to find used copies at greatly reduced prices. (3) And the very detailed explanations in the book have been honed over multiple editions. You are very unlikely to find typos in these books (I have never been able to find one). (4) And, of course, the explanations are fairly clear. But there is a downside: (1) Hell, they are making the material boring. There are so much more exciting ways to teach mathematics. (2) The book is far too detailed; so anyone teaching with it will end up skipping over large sections. Now, in a way, that's understandable. The book wants to be everything to everyone. But instead, why limit the content to the point where it can actually be covered. (3) Even for high school students, this book should focus much more on how to prove theorems.I'm a math major and I'm able to teach myself some things from this book (It requires more effort than it should though), but there are some explanations that are just horrendous.http://southbeachnightclubpromotions.com/stock/userfiles/ending-sentence-with-preposition-chicago-manual-of-style.xml

Let me just warn you, if you get this book and you get to the Taylor series chapter.don't even bother try to read his little section on Taylor's inequality. Just go online and try to learn it from someone who knows how to explain the thing haha. On a more positive note I must admit there were chapters where I found myself applauding Stewart for explaining something rather well, but those are rare occasions. I also appreciate his section 7.5, which is solely devoted to taking integrals of all kinds and he leaves it up to the reader to decide which is the best way to go about it (after already having separate chapters on substitution, parts, partial fractions and trig integrals.) He also has a chapter like this for series' after having separate chapters for the different methods of evaluation. He might have one for limits too.but I don't remember exactly, don't take my word on that one. I won't say I hate it, but it can certainly be better. However, I'm gonna be a bit generous and give it 3 stars just because I don't mind using it for reference or practicing the problems.I'm sure if I were more knowledgeable to both trigonometry and calculus, I'd give this textbook (Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals) by James Stewart a better rating. As for a new student to calculus, this is no way to attain the skill. I'm crawling on all four and at a snail's pace. This is extremely difficult to grasp for students who have very little trigonometry and calculus knowledge. Be warned. The covers of each book look identical. The companion textbook I had to buy duplicates chapters 10 and 11 from this text, so I don't even get the full benefit of a lighter textbook. If you like throwing away money, buy this book!Basically you read it and then after you finish you know calculus. Can’t ask for more than that!Currently I am using it for the University of California at Berkeley Extension School, which is taught on-line. It is a great accomplishment if you learn it all.http://www.xboxheerlen.nl/userfiles/endian-utm-mercury-manual.xmlGuess we all know which one won.I don't know about Cal III, but I sure know even though I hated (and still hate) calculus, this book is staying in my library as the material it contains can always be useful if you are pursuing higher studies. Without a teacher to correct my work, I had to find a way to do it on my own. I studied Calculus over 40 years ago and needed to take a test to prove that I still had the knowledge (I didn't). So I reviewed using Stewart's excellent text, and this manual helped me correct the problems.Sometimes it skipped steps, and those steps would turn out to be the ones that I wanted to see. So I reviewed using Stewart's excellent text, and this manual helped me correct the problems.Sometimes it skipped steps, and those steps would turn out to be the ones that I wanted to see. However, dollar for dollar, knowing what I know now I wouldn't have bought this and instead just paid for an online Chegg solutions site. -one cavort is that this solutions manual assumes you have learned everything from the previous section of the book and has shortened their solutions to skip steps the author assumes you know how to do. (difficult when your don't remember each section. It showed every single step necessary for all even and odd problems; far more helpful. If you're like me and ended up with a bad calculus teacher this book will help you a great deal. It contains solutions but also provides steps for problem solving as well so you can work the problems out on your own. I don't feel that the textbook that this manual accompanies is very good in that it doesn't have enough different example problems. Sometimes you will attempt a homework problem in the book and realize this type of problem wasn't addressed at all in the text and you don't even know what you're looking at. That is when this manual really comes in handy. If this book had more instruction I would give it a 5 star easily. Most of the problems are solved in clear sequence of step and explained. Since this is student edition, it does not cover all problems, just the odd problems. It is worth companion to the calculus book by James Stewart. All in all, this book was a life saver for Calculus 2 and a must have for all students. Cons: 1) DOES NOT INCLUDE ANSWERS TO ANY EVEN PROBLEMS, NOT EVEN END OF CHAPTER REVIEW PROBLEMS 2) Sometimes it can be difficult to follow the steps listedWhen I saw this available for the same book that I took for calculus I, I snatched it up. The professor is using the same book for calculus II. I was really excited, not have the answers, because the answers are available in the regular textbook; but this actually works out the odd problems and other select problems in the textbook. So, I am able to work out additional problems at home to really get the concept down. His explanations make ideas come alive, and his problems challenge, to reveal the beauty of calculus. Stewart's examples stand out because they are not just models for problem solving or a means of demonstrating techniques--they also encourage readers to develp an analytic view of the subject. This edition includes new problems, examples, and projects. This version of Stewart's book introduced exponential and logarithmic functions in the first chapter and their limits and derivatives are found in Chapters 2 and 3. While I didn't feel the need for examples and problems in all but a few areas, I appreciated the quality of available exercises in passing. Glad with my ug professors' choices. I actually think he thinks I'm transgender. It's like I can't go back to who I was, I preferred it that way; I have a lot to work on in order to be a better human but when I just be nice to everyone I hate myself because I see them how they see me. And they don't know what to do with me; I almost wish I were more invisible but sometimes people do like turn their heads and stare and I'm like wtf. It's not good attention and it has forced me to think about objectivity in a different way because there are some people who people are drawn to in a good way (it's like animal instinct) and others who people regard as not-good and that can really affect your life. Oops my bad it's just I've had to fight to get stability back and it didn't happen by being nice; I'd still be working at a department store and trying to just, find peace with that, maybe that's not what I want to be doing forever. That's something I find compelling and something I hope to pay forward, to help others. Like it's literally possible to reprogram your brain, to be a better person. So if I go back into writing or working on films I'd like to be more aware of professional boundaries and it's going to be a long time coming because I feel like, a lot of workplaces these days have kind of confused boundaries. I feel like there's a reason that some people are better at math, than others, and those people tend to be less, emotionally all over the place. It can come across as coldness to just be into numbers and stuff but it's where the world seems to be headed. My sister is like have you talked about in therapy that you see yourself as a freak. I'm like I am a freak compared to you. If you had your whole life to support that then you might understand. It's just like, another version of going mad. It might even be someone going mad on a very massive public stage in 2021; people call it genius. It's just what people are told is good, probably by a marketing campaign that sort of forces it upon us. It used to depress me but I've had moments of revelation where it DOES become clear there's a difference between a great poem, a great painting, and a not-so-great one. There tends to be a fine line between genius and madness, but there is a line and people who cross it shouldn't be called geniuses. Or all their fans will go nuts, too. At least in math there is a difference between the right answer and the wrong one. It's not like a question that sometimes you're just WAY off the mark, that's me in the class. I don't know if I'm prepared to divorce myself from my instinct, e.g. that I'm being judged, but I think I kind of have to in order to just move on and to hopefully move up. In fact I think they outnumber the normal people in America but you know: the non-deplorables are the ones on top, unless you consider Trump an exception to that rule. Trump's time was an interesting time. Not a fan of Trump but I think his time affected a lot. Idk why anyone would read this but it's fun to vent somewhere and also by implication draw parallels between understanding math and understanding criticism. This must be why people go onto comments sections of youtube or Reddit and like, vent their grievances. I do not use Reddit because I'd just be more anonymous than I even am now. I just wish the authors would have skipped steps less often in the examples. I just wish the authors would have skipped steps less often in the examples. Quick delivery ensured I did not miss a beat. I would have to look up the solutions for the rest. I liked it better for Calc 3. Now that I'm done with calculus, this book is a great tool for brushing up on it and can solve most of the problems in each section. This book has the most variety of problems so each problem requires a slightly different way to solve it. Good for review, but bad for a beginner who needs some rote problems to get the hang of things. I'm giving it four stars because I'm finding it useful to prepare for advanced calculus. Beginner students will most likely hate this book. The following sums up some the good and bad parts of the books Pros of the text: Really good explanation of proofs, a lot of worked-out examples, the writing is clear and precise, gives good background introduction into single and multivariable calculus. Cons of the text: Doesn't do a good job relating the practice problems back to the information found in the chapter. Another major con is that the book doesn't offer a strong intuition as to why things are the way they are. Keep in mind, this from the perspective of one student. Furthermore, since this is a textbook, it's an extremely subjective rating.I quite liked this edition. Explanations were easy to understand and the material was fleshed out, comprehensive. I basically self-studied with this book since my teacher just assigned problem sets without explaining the lesson, and got a pretty good grasp of the concepts. I purchased the Studious online account (last for 180 days), and that has been extremely helpful. There are videos for showing the solutions to odd numbered problems, and there are section quizzes.
