But as is, it covers too many topics, from how to deal with computer viruses (keep your software updated, use an anti-virus program) to warnings about scurvy ('always aim for a balanced diet'). There are pages devoted to wood-boring insects. There's an illustration of a Corgi. Worse, the book is shallow in its investigation of useful options. For emergency winter survival, it's odd to recommend an igloo (slow to make, hard to construct without a snow saw, and tough to complete in poor conditions) but to omit mention of a snow trench (fast, easy, and warm enough to shelter me on many trips), or even a snow-cave, a simple compromise. And the information shared has no filter. A beginner has no way of parsing the laundry-list of knots to prioritize a square knot (essential) over a Killick hitch (easily replaced by more versatile alternatives); there's no mention at all of how to make an improvised harness, despite several sections on emergency climbing and rappelling. Finally, it's unreliable. There are pure factual errors (people cannot survive 12 days without water, even in cool temperatures) and frequent mixing of good and poor advice (crossing a river in a group one behind the other is terrible, exposing each to the full force of the water, while crossing in a line facing downstream, with arms interwoven, is universally recommended). I don't write many reviews, and even fewer poor reviews - why disparage something others enjoyed. But this is meant to be a practical book, and it sets the bar too low. Pare it down and keep the information accurate. At half the length this could be twice as valuable. Here are links to better books on the areas discussed. I know too little about bushcraft and trapping to recommend one there - any suggestions appreciated. For rope, climbing, and mountaineering skills, A few pages go a long way on each topic: But I prefer Buck Tilton's, in part because I did my Wilderness EMT training with him, but also for their concise explanations.http://cagirijaandcarajumenonfoundation.org/userfiles/emerson-microwave-mw8991sb-manual.xml Here's his most comprehensive: Maybe I just need a much more descriptive guide.I'm also pretty sure i'd rather die than use animal eyeballs as a water source (to be fair, that wasn't the first source suggested by the author!)And you the reader probably can't tell which is which without a scientific background. It's really bad for a survival book to make and perpetuate that sort of mistake. Essentially any time the author talks about magnetism, electricity, static, and their phenomena, he's wrong. One example is the author's instruction to magnetize a ferrous wire by rubbing silk against it in one direction only, so that it can be used as a compass needle. He is obviously confusing electrostatic and electromagnetic phenomena. The author does mention that the effect of silk is weak and that if you rub it with a magnet it will work better, but doesn't seem to realize that the magnetizing effect of silk (and static electricity in general) is non-existent and that if the wire works as a compass at all, it's because it is already slightly magnetized. People who have performed the experiment of magnetizing by rubbing silk say it doesn't work, and that's what physics would predict as well. Yes, I know that many books and thousands of web pages perpetuate the same myth. The reality is that most ferrous objects get magnetized naturally simply by being in the Earth's magnetic field. One experimenter found that 75 of needles he purchased in stores would work as a compass without any effort to magnetize them. But rubbing silk (or hair, or anything else you can expect to produce a static electric field), doesn't change them. Another example is the author's statement that wet matches are dried by placing them in your hair, because of the static electricity in your hair. Static electricity doesn't dry things, your hair absorbs the water or wicks it away. It's almost as if someone with a scientific background told these yarns to poorly-educated survivalists just to play a trick on them. And if it's writtten by the ex SAS survival instructor what more is there to say.Disappointingly it doesn't but I still learned a whole load of useful stuff. Don't eat that mushroom! It could be used as an adventurers Bible or an interesting book for dad on father's day. It covers everything from what vegetation to survive on right up to how to survive an urban terrorist attack. Overall a very enjoyable, informative read that I would highly recommend. Rocketeer 4.0 out of 5 stars I just knew that this edition of the book is a smaller version, handy to keep in your backpack. Backpack? Back pocket is more like it. It's about the size of a deck of cards. While that means there's no excuse not to take it with you, it also means that the type is awfully small. If you wear reading glasses be sure to pack a pair or two along with the book. I would have preferred that they use larger pages and make the book thinner. But I can't really argue with the decision they made. Most people will probably prefer the fatter but smaller dimensions. The book, by the way, is impressive. Wiseman is indeed a wise man who knows what he's talking about. If you do buy this book I think you should seriously consider buying its bigger brother, An easier to read edition for home, which will allow you to read and study it thoroughly and this very small, very portable version you just might want to take everywhere. The British SAS is THE authority on survival in harsh environments, and the author gives us the advantage of their skills without having to sign up. I never thought to pay attention to dimension sizes when buying books, so I didn't really think the book would have such small dimensions (it's a little bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes), but I am glad it does, it makes it really handy to toss in to a backpack. The low price makes it a good idea to buy several, one for the car, one for the house and one for the backpack. This guide covers it all, from how to properly hunt, process, cook and store all sorts of game animals and edible plants, but helps you identify the stuff that will kill you or make you sick. It also covers the making of shelters and rafts, weapons for hunting, medical aid techniques, weather prediction.the list is just too big to fit in this review. Its a great collection of knowledge and experience that applies across most situations and locations. The format makes for easy reading and reference and the diagrams are easy to follow. It covers all the essentials of navigation, food and water (even sources of salt), game trapping and hunting (inclusive of simple weapons). Overall, a great buy. Scope for improvement: Make this into a smaller, hardcover or leatherbound, waterproof edition that will easily fit into any camper's bag or outdoor excursion package for quick and easy reference. It does focus on living off the land, the mental aspects, tools and survival tactics, but mostly in the light of surviving an accident or disaster when help is on the way. Conditioning yourself to live long enough for help to arrive. It made me realize how bad things would be if help wasn't on the way and how ill prepared we are in the event of massive disaster or something changing the entire planet. You can't take people used to running water, sanitation, cell phones, the Internet, grocery stores, cars, and whatever else and toss them out there and expect them to live beyond being a scavenger. It's a good read, but there are updated versions of this book now available. This book was speaking to me. It is good knowledge for ANYBODY. The author really made a good book. He seperates the items into the places you want them, and he even gives you the reasons they are there. He explains how to make all the shelters and snares.I accidentally purchased the digital book version. I love the pictures that help identify edibles, safe from poison plants and animals. I am planning on purchasing the hard bound edition as it is a treasure trove of information and will provide a continuing resource that I can make notes in. And in the event there is no power for a reader it would be the only good resource. This is probably the one survival book almost everyone could use, no matter their experience level. It is very compact, fairly light, and packed with tons of useful info. Much of the info is practical knowledge even if you're not in a survival situation. It is written clearly and well illustrated, and is fun to read. The book is also water resistant and very durable. I have noticed a lot of typos in the book, but I still consider it the best survival book I have seen, and I highly reccomend it. I also have the larger version, which is a little easier to read and contains a bit more info, but the smaller one is very comprehensive and has almost as much information.I would recommend this book for any bushcrafters, survivalists, campers and preppers who need basic info that covers a wide spectrum. I would accompany this book with a dedicated first aid book, and another that is more specific to your environment, like, edible plants of North America, or surviving in the Everglades or whatever your particular situation may be. If I could only pick one book to bug-out with, this is it!There's still time yet. Arrived in good time and good condition. I keep it in my emergency grab bag with my 15 toilet rolls and 20 bags of pasta.I have to say although the kindle edition is informative it isn't as good as the paperback. I was very disappointed that there weren't many illustrations. It was mostly all words. It does contain lots of useful information but I prefered the paperback edition with pictures. My days of being very fit are long gone, but then the chances of me being stranded without good supplies in any sort of wilderness are also now very remote. However, the experience that I do have leads me to make one comment at least. Although in a (literally) small book such as this, space is a premium, I think the important of physical fitness was not emphasised enough. Mental aspects were covered better. If you really are in the situations that the book tries to help about, your chances of survival are significantly enhanced by already being fit. This almost cannot be stressed enough. Once upon a time, the chances of unfit people being in such situations anyway was very small. But in the modern world with people easily able to transport themselves with modern vehicles, it's less unlikely than it used to be. Still, for ?2.99 this is a good buy and contains much interesting and useful information even if it is not likely to be used by most members of the general public. The credentials of the author are second to none. If you want to learn about survival, you won't go wrong starting with this book. It is always good practice to learn from more than one source to ensure that all bases are covered and confirmed. I recommend the full size version to read at home and the pocket size version to have with you in your survival gear for reference. You may find that your memory fails when you're under extreme stress, injured or simply tired and you need a reminder. Please try again later. It explains a lot of things that you should know about being in a wilderness environment, but there are things you should already be proficient in before using this manual. One of these things is how to properly use and maintain a knife. Among other things that would be good is not to be afraid to kill and gut an animal for food because you think it's gross. You should also have some working knowledge in wood and rope work to make those sections easier to use. I must say I have actually learned some useful information from this book and I've been an outdoors person since I was a kid. Survival isn't for the weak as they say and you also need to be mentally prepared to be useful in any emergency situation if you expect to get out alive. That being said, I have pushed myself beyond comfortable limits to test my resolve and I guess that's why I became a firefighter, because I knew I could handle that kind of stress. So I recommend this book to any adventurer who wants to learn more than they know at the present time. Good Luck and Godspeed, danofiremanoLots of survival ideas covering a wide range of conditions. Print is very small, as others have said, but it is a Pocket Guide. The 'iPhone app' seems to also be available for purchase on Android, and which covers a similar (but smaller) set of ideas. The app also have a new discussion on urban survival guide that is also very interesting. This title has gone out of print - so they are becoming harder and harder to find at a reasonable price. I sure wish they would reprint this title, as it is perfect for every survivalist, prepper, bushman, or camper. If you can't find a copy, at least get the SAS Survival Handbook (heavier and bulkier) to study. My recommendation would be to get both, if possible - each contains information the other doesn't. The SAS Survival Handbook is good for home study, or base camp - and the SAS Survival Guide is good for your pack for reference. Very useful, and potentially life-saving information. Highly recommended. An inch larger in either direction would've still fit in a pocket and allowed for a larger font size. It's a step up from the average every-day-over-the-counter-outdoor-book, touching a pretty high note if you're into serious outdoor adventures or survival stuff. The book measures about 3.25-inches by 4.5-inches by.75-inches thick; very compact (fit-in-your-hip-pocket-compact). Wiseman uses.message headlines. on every page, one idea per page (which makes it easy to read), and he cross-references pages for additional information. Pictures too. Examples: The section on finding and gathering water is very well written, and the section on plants (edible plants and plants to avoid), includes color drawings. I bought two books. An extra copy for myself and one for a friend. The package came from The Book Depository in Gloucester, UK so be patient because the 2 to 3 day delivery option may not apply.Excellent resource to refer to as needed.May need magnifying glass on some, but well worth itFor example, I failed to see the importance of the knot tying chapter until I realised that you could improvise snow chains with 10mm nylon rope and then it dawned on me that you needed to apply the right kind of non-slip knot to ensure that it didn't come off. It's a great pocket guide with a lot of useful survival information and has gone into my survival kit as an important source of information not only for me but whoever needs to borrow it at a time of need when internet isn't an option. Fully recommended!Ideal size for keeping with you - a waterproof paper version would be ideal, which would make this safe to use in all weather. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Phillips 5.0 out of 5 stars Although we like the “SAS Survival Handbook” we actually have found another book by Wiseman to be a better reference source for our purposes; the “SAS Survival Guide For any climate, for any situation: 2nd Edition (Collins Gem)”. So, although the smaller “SAS Survival Guide” only has 57 of the number of pages (and a lot smaller print), we have found it more useful since we can carry it with us when we need it.Covers almost anything you may need for literally any situation you could ever possibly be caught up in. The color photos for plant and mushroom identification are quite nice also. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that they should have a weather proof option available, and some of the information could be more in depth. But with soo much information packaged into such a small book you have to sacrifice a little to get a lot I suppose, and there is a lot of critical information that could save your life or a family member's in a emergency situation. It takes up no room in any size pack, so to not have a copy in your gear is almost neglecting yourself and putting yourself and others at an unnecessary risk. I will be buying more for my friends and family as gifts. It never hurts to be self reliant. Also more region specific versions would great. (e.g., a more in depth North American version would be great) not that I don't find intriguing knowing which plants and animals are edible or poisonous in Australia or Africa. It just won't help me any further in my situations, and is almost an overload of unusable knowledge (in my scenario, maybe not yours though!) Couldn't recommend enough! This covers the whole gambit including how to prepare or deal with whatever climate you happen to be surviving in which is one step further than all of my other guides have taken it. It also covers meals and has great advice on not starving and how to keep from poisoning yourself. I've read through it once, employed the tactics twice and I've only had it for two weeks so far. This should more than pay for itself. Also it's affordable compared to some of the other guides at the same size. (Which do NOT include climate advice and prep). I will admit the book is smaller than I expected but quickly realized it fit perfectly in my day pack pocket, it's like it was sized like that on purpose.Easy to chunk this in a bag before a hike or going camping. I've not needed any of the emergency things yet, but it's good to have just in case. Do I already know what poison ivy looks like. Sure, but I don't know other parts. Also, everyone in your party may not know anything at all. It is rather small, so if you have a hard time reading small to regular print, this is not for you. I skimmed through it quickly, and then it was stolen by my 8 year old and he studies it everywhere we go. Good price, takes up little room in your bag, may save a life. It would also be good to have a copy in the glove box especially if the driver is young or not experienced with the outdoors. You never know when something will happen. It's perfect to pack into my emergency pack. Of course this is for extreme scenarios, but it covers all of the basics. For example starting with what type of gear you should have. For example, knife selection to condoms for storing water. It's really a great little book, and probably has a lot of great information for those unexpected emergencies.Great pictures to explain everything too. I would say the knowledge in this book is pretty extensive for it being an unspecified region and climate type. Usually when you get a survival book, it's based on where you are taking a trip or where you live, but after reading through it, I've found TONS of very practical knowledge that would be applicable from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite. Great book to keep with you in your pack or edc bag. The author has clearly mastered the art of survival and put together a very thorough generalized compilation of all your essential needs. It has more than enough info depending on your location, surprisingly a real good general description of your location. Meaning forest, desert or even ocean locations it gives a lot of info. It is small enough to take with you anywhere. If survival skills are of interest, this is a great book to read. I was surprised at the size (even though looking back I see they are written in the advert). My version from 20 years ago was a large book, 8x8 inches perhaps, and an inch thick. I was surprised to find this one a similar thickness, but only 3 inches tall. The content is still the same (more or less), but this is a far less enjoyable reading experience due to the mini proportions. The guide does give good advice on preparation, which is just common sense, but nevertheless is still very informative.Bought this as a present for someone who travels and he loved it too. NeeNee Marie 5.0 out of 5 stars There's still time yet. You may find that your memory fails when you're under extreme stress, injured or simply tired and you need a reminder. The size of the book makes it hard to carry with you on your trip. Its not exactly pocket size (maybe cargo pants) but still. The larger expanded version is even better, I have read it cover to cover, and am currently in the process of reading it again. The information in this book is potentially life saving, not only should you own this book, but you should also buy a copy for your children, and encourage them to read it also. It contains everything from first aid, to how to predict the weather, thoroughly interesting, and contain something to captivate everyone.I take it with me whenever I go hiking, camping or hunting.
