In building a dome observatory, you have the option of fabricating your own dome or buying a pre-made dome. The book convinced me to go the pre-made route and in retrospect I'm glad I did. A home-made dome is a major undertaking and the materials are costly. John's book contains a wealth of information on every phase of the project. Astrophotography, especially under high magnification, requires an absolutely rigid pier and sound environment, and the author provides thoughtful guidance in meeting these demands. I especially appreciated his guidance on planning for and building the pier, which got me started. Springer Science did a superb in producing this book. The many color photographs and clear diagrams go well with John's expert writing.There was very little new information, and very few insights that helped me decide one way or the other (dome or shed). The problem is that each observatory needs to be custom-made to adapt to the viewer's environment so it's difficult to define the best choice. Another problem is that zoning regulations vary greatly from state to state, making it difficult to define how one might want to add power, heating, or lighting, or how to position it. If you've never considered building your own observatory, the book might be a fair introduction to the project. If you've already done a fair amount of your own research, however, there' not much new you're likely to learn.Illustrated different means of constructing a roll off roof, with some explanation of why certain methods were better than others. The book is not well organized, has the feel of a book written in the 1950s on a typewriter, and honestly doesn't present a lot of useful information to help you plan out building an observatory. Instead it just seems to present a bunch of random tidbits on various aspects. It does go over most aspects such as walls, roof, electrical, etc.That means a roll-off, unless you live in the tundra and want a dome's protection from winds in the wintertime. Roll-offs are cheap, easy to construct and allow star-hopping. I've had two built - the second by a contractor using this book and it is a joy. If you explore online, and anybody planning an observatory is going to do that, you will find that despite the copyright, this entire book can be downloaded from a (Red) Chinese source. Don't lose your soul.Hick's book is based to a large extent on his own observatory, but the general principles and advice that he gives can be transferred to other designs. The book is well-written, clear and with pictures and drawings. I took off one star because it is focused on one design - the author's own observatory, but that should not deter anyone that is interested in the topic. His design serves as an example to start at.Not all observatories need to stand out.It is well illustrated and the text correctly references the pictures. There is helpful information about location, design, and other things you might not have though about. I highly reccomend this book to anyone considering building a backyard observatory. It also comes with a CD that contains all the illustrations in the text along with detailed plans for construction.Including all the drawings necessary to build this observatory. Also would allow the modifications if you were going to change the size of the building.The techniques if applicable to ones situation are well described and this is one of the most economical to build. There are better more expensive methods which should be considered first.Critical aspects are security, interior temperature year round ( which must be pretty even, 40 to 70F) and how much horizon above a 30 degree angle one would have.Lots (and lots) of pictures show what other people have built from the very small and simple looking wooden box to quite large, summer house style 'villas' that few people in the UK would have the money or the space to build. After that excitement, the book gets down to business by prompting the reader to ask important questions for design including touching on planning permission. The bottom line there is of course that you need to check your own laws in your own country and the book reminds you of that in many places, which is good. Finally the book proceeds into some plans for construction. These plans are fairly robust, but the book seems to whizz through the construction in less time that it's taken to tell you about other people's builds, discuss the pro's and con's and ask pertinent questions. There is also no real choice in the design except in detail like type of foundations. The book does show some detail on the complexities of the rolling roof part of the design which is good but the 'Building Plans' CD that is included is disappointingly just the books illustrations in electronic format and not any kind of engineering drawings or architectural plans. To sum up, I would not have bought this book if I'd known it was geared so much towards an American market. I should have known better of course having been thoroughly disappointed with many of the Patrick Moore Practical Astronomy series of books. However, having said that the book has raised one or two questions that my prior research into building a Roll On Roll Off roof observatory had not previously encountered and it was very nice to see so many different home built observatories in the book. All-in-all I quite enjoyed reading it. Most of my time was spent trying to examine detail in the pictures in order to see the detail of what other people had built that the text wasn't explaining though. I've not yet constructed my back garden observatory, but for sure it will look very little like the plans included in this book (other than being rectangular with a roll-off roof). Indeed, a short internet search will uncover many home-built observatories with their owners keen to describe at length what they have done, what problems they encountered and how they dealt with them. I've found such internet sites (all over the world, not just in the UK) to be a much more fascinating and rewarding read than this book. I've given it 4 stars because I think for some people this book will be exactly everything that they need, however for me it was some pretty pictures and a couple of good ideas only.
