Air conditioning was offered as an optional extra on the 4.2 L Daimler versions, which were launched in October 1969 in a series of television advertisements featuring Sir William.In 1978 the carburetors were similarly replaced with EFI in the 4.2 L 6-cylinder XJ6L.In the last year of production in New Zealand (1978), a special 'SuperJag' (XJ6-SLE) model was produced which featured half leather, half dralon wide pleat seats, vinyl roof, chrome steel wheels and air conditioning as standard.A few XJ-C cars were modified by Lynx Cars and Avon into a convertible body style with a retractable canvas top, but this was not a factory product. The Vanden Plas trademark was retained by Jaguar in North America, and top-of-the-line XJs were still sold there with the Vanden Plas name.The last 100 cars built were numbered and sold in Canada as part of a special series commemorating the end of production. These 100 cars featured the option of having a brass plaque located in the cabin. The first-generation XJ was revolutionary for its time, and its look proved so iconic that Jaguar became reluctant to change it for subsequent generations. The XJ’s styling is perhaps one of the greatest automotive examples of evolution rather than revolution—until 2009, that is, when it underwent a radical makeover to become the entirely modern-looking XJ that’s on sale today. Read on for a look at how the XJ developed over the years and cemented its place in Jaguar’s history: Although the design incorporates cues from the previous Mark X and 420 sedans such as a similarly shaped grille and quad headlights, the overall shape is wildly different from those of its rounded predecessors, with an overtly sporty long and low-slung profile.The twelve-cylinder XJ boasts a top speed of 147 mph, enough for Jaguar to claim it as the fastest sedan in the world. A long-wheelbase XJ also joins the lineup in 1972. Its more prominent bumpers are necessary to meet U.S. safety regulations, causing the grille to shrink. Jaguar also updates the interior and adds standard equipment such as central locking and power windows. After the first year of production, all sedans transition to the long-wheelbase setup. Both the six- and twelve-cylinder engines adopt fuel injection by the end of the Series II production run. With just over 10,000 produced between 1975 and 1977, the XJ-C is rare. A brief racing career for the two-door in the European Touring Car Championship series between 1976 and 1977 never really takes off due to the car’s weight and reliability problems. The new look maintains the XJ’s recognizable front-end cues, but the revised roofline and side windows contribute to an even lower, more rakish greenhouse. The V-12 engine receives numerous upgrades in 1981, with new cylinder heads and a higher compression ratio improving fuel economy considerably. In the United States, the XJ6 gains a range-topping Vanden Plas model with extra luxury touches. Not only does it boast a more modern, angular design in keeping with 1980s-era trends, this XJ also uses a new six-cylinder engine called AJ6. In the U.S., this more advanced 3.6-liter powerplant pairs with a four-speed automatic, which is the first to use Jag’s distinctive J-gate shifter. Sales take off, forcing Jaguar to add a second assembly line in 1987; by 1989 Jaguar is selling 39,000 a year. To placate traditionalists put off by the new car’s squared-off styling, however, Jaguar continues production of the twelve-cylinder Series III cars until 1992. This also serves to keep a V-12 XJ model available, given that the XJ40 platform was not originally designed to accommodate a V-12. The new-generation XJ12 doesn’t arrive until 1993, near the end of the XJ40’s run. The X300’s design walks back from the boxier look of its predecessor, reintroducing the curvier surfaces and quad headlights from XJs of yore. Joining the six-cylinder XJ6 (pictured) and twelve-cylinder XJ12 versions is a new high-performance offshoot called the XJR, which uses a supercharged 4.0-liter inline-six capable of pushing the sedan to 155 mph—as fast as the contemporary V-12 car. The XJ’s V-8 engine grows to 4.2 liters, and again the supercharged XJR model complements the standard XJ8 with higher performance and more aggressive looks. Eventually a Super V8 model joins the lineup, offering the XJR’s supercharged V-8 with the long-wheelbase body style and more luxurious appointments. It is high time to enter a new era, and the flagship XJ is the natural choice to usher in a radical change to Jaguar’s design language. With the talented Ian Callum at its helm, Jaguar’s design team abandons nearly everything that had made the XJ iconic up to this point, introducing a rounded and coupelike greenhouse, slim single-piece headlights, a new squarish grille shape, daring vertical taillights, and a blacked-out D-pillar giving the car a floating-roof effect. Similar to its predecessor, the new X351 XJ relies on aluminum construction but otherwise makes numerous departures from XJs of the past with its more minimalistic and modern interior design and a new range of engines including (for the U.S. market) a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 and a 5.0-liter V-8 in either naturally aspirated or supercharged configurations, with today’s most powerful version being the 575-hp XJR575. An all-wheel-drive option for the V-6 car joins the lineup in late 2012 to better compete with Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic and BMW’s xDrive systems that are fast gaining popularity among American luxury consumers, particularly in the Midwest and the Northeast. Distinguished by visual cues such as special 20-inch wheels, a black grille, XJ50 badging, and tweaked front and rear bumpers, the 2019-model-year XJ50 also boasts diamond-quilted leather seats and numerous logos inside. It’s offered with both the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 and the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. But the XJ continues to soldier on with nary a peep from Jaguar about its future.
