Alterman's Gambit guide covers most of the best known white piece gambits in enough detail for the more expert player, but also covers the basic ideas behind going down a pawn or two for the lower rated player. It was worth the investment for me, and is now a bit dog-eared from heavy use. My only quibble is that there are a few more gambits not covered in this book. Useful for players from 1000-2000. More advanced players will use databases and their own analysis to build upon this foundation.However, to get anything out of this you probably need to be at least at the level of an average club player (say grading 120 or above). Lots of variations, examples of attacking play and demonstrations of attacking motifs in different kinds of position.As with all books of this type, sometimes the assessment seems a little one sided in favour of the side which has given the gambit, but both sides of the position are explained. In this book the development of some openings like the Benko gambit starts in the late 80'S when GM Alterman began his chess career. Alterman practiced this opening against strong opposition (young URSS championship) at critical games. The reader can understand the gambit in a more complete fashion as both, the historic and theoretical developments are discussed at the same time. This book does not cover the Marshall, Traxler or Faalkeber gambit (from e4 openings) it is my understanding than those openings will be covered in a second book.
