The author focused heavily on thematic tactics and application of opening principles. The theory sections were generally well done, although the lines that he focuses on are almost exclusively the accepted variations. He might mention the declined line, but then not cover it, so you will have to learn the declined lines elsewhere. This is an excellent book for seeing thematic tactics in many openings as well as seeing how dynamics can play out in the opening. This book also does a great job of presenting various openings for players wanting to develop a repertoire, though generally, you will have to learn the declined lines elsewhere and players over 2000 might want to also consult other sources for their theory.http://itkaufmann.com/images/fckimages/elitebook-8530p-user-manual.xml

Alterman's Gambit guide covers most of the best known white piece gambits in enough detail for the more expert player, but also covers the basic ideas behind going down a pawn or two for the lower rated player. It was worth the investment for me, and is now a bit dog-eared from heavy use. My only quibble is that there are a few more gambits not covered in this book. DocvanNow I am trying to teach my 10 year old grandson. Alterman provides a very good source for games to play through with my grandson and help him develop strategies in the opening. This could be considered a gambit repertoire book for Black vs 1.e4, though not all openings are met by gambits. The Marshall, Traxler, and Falkbeer get their own chapters. The mainlines are all covered very well. Sometimes he just gives a line for minor variations. The analysis is very well done. Useful for players from 1000-2000. More advanced players will use databases and their own analysis to build upon this foundation. However, to get anything out of this you probably need to be at least at the level of an average club player (say grading 120 or above). Lots of variations, examples of attacking play and demonstrations of attacking motifs in different kinds of position. As with all books of this type, sometimes the assessment seems a little one sided in favour of the side which has given the gambit, but both sides of the position are explained. In the chapter covering the Marshall gambit in the Ruy Lopez the main recommendations are 11.Nf6 and 11.Bb7. In particular 11.Nf6 is considered unsound, and the author acknowledges this, but rates it's practical chances quite highly. If theoretical soundness is very important to you then this book is probably not for you. Also it will definitely sharpen your tactics.Boris Alterman has written an opening book that's just as much an instructional manual.http://cowichanseniors.ca/userfiles/elitebook-2530p-repair-manual.xml It gives you a nice range of gambit openings to play and, while teaching you the (mercifully short and memorable) sequences of moves that they comprise, highlights exactly why these moves are good in the position on the board. Example games each teach and reinforce concepts introduced earlier in the text and are light enough on variations (without lacking them entirely) to be followed without a chess board. Added together you get a set of openings to play as well as an insight into how to handle the arising positions correctly by playing dynamically, utilising a lead in development, using and maintaining the initiative and exploiting tactical opportunities. As usual for a book published by Quality Chess, the production values are also excellent with clear typesetting and excellent binding. Thoroughly recommended.Lo recomiendo a todos los principiantes. One of the key lines against the Tromp is 2.c5 3 d5 Qb6 where White has the option of the very aggressive Vaganian Gambit - named after the very strong Soviet player Rafael Vaganian, who played it in the early 1970s - with 4 Nc3!? Qxb2 Bd2. The idea is to activate all of white's pieces and make use of the open lines and space for an all-out attack. And in a new series of Gambit Guide for ICC Chess.FM, GM Boris Alterman evaluates the latest developments in the Vaganian Gambit. Unleash your inner Paul Morphy with this Gambit Guide. If you’re looking to have more fun from your chess and create more memorable games, start adding some gambits into your opening repertoire. Played for 100s of years, gambits are openings which deliberately give up a pawn (or more) too rapidly develop their pieces, start an attack and destroy the opponent in record time. Heroes such as Adolf Anderssen and Paul Morphy created some of the most loved games of all time (the Evergreen Game and the Immortal Game). Nowadays, most club players follow the elite GMs in their choice of openings which means gambits are played less often. However, they are no less dangerous, indeed new ideas are being found all the time. You can imagine what happens when a club player studies gambits in depth then unleashes them in tournament play. Their unprepared opponents get torn apart. Want to emulate Morphy, Spassky and Morozevich by playing the King’s Gambit. GM Alterman has a superb 3-part series on this classic opening. Heard about some of the mayhem the Smith-Morra can cause against Sicilian Defense players. Watch the course and you’ll be terrifying Black with your attacks down the c and d-files. Perhaps you’re sick of having to face boring, defensive openings like the Caro-Kann or Petroff. There’s a gambit for those too. In fact, you’ll find an aggressive gambit to take down just about any opening with the Gambit Guide. This isn’t just move memorization either. You learn how to stay one step ahead against any of your opponent’s plans, the dangers you have to be aware of, all the killer attacking formations you need to know and you get to see how Kasparov, Tal and Morphy solved attacking decisions at the board. As well as giving you the most aggressive opening repertoire around, Alterman’s Gambit Guide also teaches you how to make the most of the middlegame positions. GM Alterman’s focus on explaining the ideas not just dictating moves makes the material easy to learn and remember. If you want more wins, whether in tournaments or club chess, seriously consider making the Gambit Guide your new repertoire Included Products: 1.e4 Gambits 122 videos and over 61 hours of instruction. GM Boris Alterman explores the best 1. c4, 1. d4, 1. f4 and 1. Nf3 gambits ! The Second Mega Pack has all the 1.d4 Gambit Guide openings and, as a bonus, 1.c4, 1.Nf3 and 1.f4! 28 different opening series. Specifications Alterman pays a lot of attention to the practical value of his suggested opening lines. It is not a manual in the sense that everything is covered. I truly enjoyed reading this volume, even more so than the others in this series. There is a tremendous amount of chess understanding to be gleaned from this and its companions. Themes such as positional compensation, initiative, active piece play, dynamic counterplay and more will become familiar parts of your chess vocabulary and you will inevitably become a stronger player in the process. It is indeed a very weighty volume in terms of content, but the reading and study flow fast and agile. A particularly attractive and useful addition is the summary of a few simple, clear and easy-to-remember points to learn from each game commentary. Please upgrade your browser or activate Google Chrome Frame to improve your experience. A beginner should avoid the Queens gambit and French defence and play open games instead. You may come up with a deep strategic idea, but your opponent will punish you if you make just one tactical slip. Also the advice about playing aggressively and combining this with the gambits and open games makes chess more exciting. Games are sharper:-).Well written with ample diagrams on most pages and good variations to clarify most moves. I might be biased towards Boris Alterman as I enjoy watching his Videos online at the ICC!The format and the content allows the reader to grasp quickly the major ideas in each example and chapter in general. In this book the development of some openings like the Benko gambit starts in the late 80'S when GM Alterman began his chess career. Alterman practiced this opening against strong opposition (young URSS championship) at critical games. The reader can understand the gambit in a more complete fashion as both, the historic and theoretical developments are discussed at the same time. This book does not cover the Marshall, Traxler or Faalkeber gambit (from e4 openings) it is my understanding than those openings will be covered in a second book.
