The Peugeot 3008 is an exception to that rule, though, as the free-to-spec Celebes Blue you see here is a metallic shade, which gives it a premium-feeling sheen in bright sunlight. Being a dark colour means it’ll hide dirt fairly well, too, and the more subdued tone means you shouldn’t have too much trouble selling a Peugeot 3008 in Celebes Blue on the used market. Because it’s a lighter shade, though, it’ll require a bit more regular cleaning in order to look factory fresh. This metallic paint does claw back some ground by being an inoffensive and smart-looking shade, which also helps trim pieces like the chrome accents on the doors stand out more than they would on a lighter colour. The 3008 has been designed for relaxing driving. It's comfortable, economical and quiet on motorway journeys, remaining steady if you turn into corners quickly without too much leaning. Despite its size, it feels nimble because the 3008 changes direction sharply - that sense is enhanced by the small steering wheel, which is meant to make the car feel more agile. Despite its appearance as a rugged and capable off-roader, in truth the 3008 is not cut out for much more than a steep driveway. Although some models do feature some fancy tech that gives the effect of four-wheel drive with improved grip in slippery conditions. The most powerful plug-in hybrid version does feature all-wheel drive, but again, don't expect to be scaling mountains. Inside, the car is as practical as a big 4x4, though, with plenty of space for two large adults to sit in the back. The 591-litre boot is what you'd expect of a crossover this size, and considerably larger than the 430 litres in the Nissan Qashqai. An adjustable shelf allows you to create an under floor compartment. Fold the seats down with the pull of a lever and there’s 1670 litres to play with. For more space, the Peugeot 5008 is a larger version of this car, with seven seats. Other petrol cars have the e-THP label. Diesel engines are called BlueHDi. The next number (120 in this example) is the engine's horsepower. Gearbox The 3008 has a manual gearbox with six gears as standard but there’s an optional automatic gearbox available, too, called the EAT8 (Efficient Automatic Transmission 8). It's turbocharged, which provides extra power that makes the engine feel bigger, without having a devastating impact on fuel economy. You're unlikely to come close to the unrealistic official fuel economy figure of 53.3mpg, but real-world efficiency is around 40mpg, which is impressive for a crossover. If you’re a low-mileage driver or your budget is tight, it’s the obvious choice. This 1.2 makes it hard to make a case for the larger 1.6 petrol. It's more powerful and noticeably faster to accelerate but you can only specify it with the automatic gearbox, which just makes it even more expensive. Of the diesels, the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 is excellent. It pulls well, it’s economical and cheap to tax, and it’s available with a manual or automatic gearbox. Once again, abandon all hope of achieving the official fuel economy figure of up to 71mpg; the real-world figure is closer to 50mpg, according to the Equa Index, which estimates fuel economy in normal driving, based in public road testing. Despite this disparity, this makes it one of the most economical crossovers on the market. The larger 2.0 BlueHDi 180 diesel engine, is a lot more powerful. It’s a great choice if you regularly travel fully loaded or cover lots of motorway miles. Real-world economy of almost 46mpg is only average, though. This has the virtual iCockpit with a 12.3-inch high-definition instrument display and 8in dashboard screen, which includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto software. There's also 17in alloy wheels, climate control, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, rear parking sensors, cruise control and a speed limiter. Safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking and an alert if the car drifts out of its lane. Allure cars cost almost ?2,000 more when new, and add 18in alloy wheels, a reversing camera, front parking sensors, power folding door mirrors and blue ambient lighting. These cars also include sat-nav, which might seem of little use, given that you can display your Android or Apple mapping apps on any 3008 dashboard screen. However, the Peugeot system also displays directions in the screen behind the steering wheel, making them easier to follow. Extra safety equipment includes a blind spot alert and steering that will nudge the car back on track if it drifts out of its lane. The seats are partially trimmed in artificial leather and the door mirrors project an image of the Peugeot lion onto the ground as you approach the car. Brighter LED headlights are extremely useful at night Another ?1,000 brings GT Line Premium specification, with keyless entry and start, front heated seats with massage function and a motorised bootlid that can be opened by poking your foot under the rear bumper. Expensive, top-spec GT trim tips the 3008 uncomfortably into premium-badge territory with 19in alloy wheels, oak veneers, nappa leather, a panoramic glass roof and adaptive cruise control that adjusts the car's speed to maintain a safe distance from any vehicle in front. For the price, you could afford a BMW or Audi. Image 4 of 4 Peugeot 3008 Reliability and warranty According to the 2018 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, the Peugeot 3008 is Britain's best car to own - and by some margin too. Owners were particularly fond of the way it looks and its build quality. Particularly, it fairs well in interior quality and comfort, and the amount of safety features it has on it. Only 11 per cent of owners surveyed reported a fault, with electrical items probably to blame if a 3008 experiences any faults. The new 3008 feels even better-built than the 308 it shares parts with, and if it does go wrong you'll be protected in the first three years by the car's standard warranty. Used Peugeot 3008 The first brand new Peugeot 3008s arrived in Britain at the beginning of 2017, so there are already plenty of used models to choose from. Demand is high, though, so prices are still relatively high. The cheapest models start at ?13,500 on BuyaCar, with finance costing from ?200 per month. Diesel models are most common and least expensive. Most are fitted with the 1.6-litre diesel engine with 120 horsepower, which was replaced by a newer and slightly more powerful 1.5-litre engine. Performance and fuel economy are similar, so you're not missing out on much by opting for the older engine. Petrol models cost from ?14,695 or ?217 per month. The looks are slightly confusing, resembling a blend of SUV, MPV and hatchback car shapes. Beyond that split personality, however, lies an excellent family car. There’s a new model due in showrooms imminently, and since this looks set to be popular and expensive, it’s worth assessing the merits of the outgoing, Mk1 3008 as a second-hand buy. 9 To start with, the 3008’s boot is huge, at 512 litres, the car’s economy is pretty decent and the driving experience is far better than you might expect, with sharp, accurate steering and little body lean in corners. Things can get a little uncomfortable when going over bigger bumps in the road, but the 3008 is no worse in this area than many cars. Interior space up front is another strong point and the high ride height should be appreciated by both driver and passengers. Given the 3008’s relatively large dimensions, adults in the rear may be surprised there isn’t more legroom. However, there’s more than sufficient for children of all ages, who are likely to be the main occupants sitting there. Peugeot 3008 Mk1 history 9 When the Peugeot 3008 was launched in 2009, buyers could choose from a 1.6-litre petrol engine with either 118 or 148bhp, or from a pair of diesels. The diesels were far more popular options, with the cheaper and more efficient 108bhp 1.6-litre outselling the punchier 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel by some margin. A 161bhp 2.0-litre diesel was added to the range from June 2010 while the 1.6-litre was replaced with a new version that was more efficient even though it was the same size with similar power. The 2.0-litre diesel was available only with an automatic gearbox, which is fairly smooth, but the optional automatic offered with 1.6-litre diesel is a little jerkier. Peugeot launched a diesel-electric hybrid 3008 in 2012. It had 197bhp and four-wheel drive, and while Peugeot claimed it could do 74mpg, it was expensive to buy and few found homes. By the end of the Mk1 3008’s production run, the only petrol option was a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 120bhp, and these models inhabit the more expensive end of the used 3008 market. Buyers could choose from three trim levels: Active, Sport and Exclusive. All have electric front windows, air-conditioning, electronic stability control and remote central locking. Sport models also have alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and cruise control, while top-spec Exclusive 3008s come with a panoramic sunroof, automatic lights and wipers, climate control and a head-up display which beams the car’s speed and other information onto the windscreen. 9 Peugeot also offered a few special-edition 3008s. SR trim is based on Sport but comes with sat-nav, Bluetooth connectivity, mud and snow tyres, and Peugeot’s Grip Control system, essentially a sophisticated traction control system that helps out in slippery conditions. Envy trim was also based on Sport, but adds the Exclusive trim’s panoramic sunroof and head-up display as well as tinted rear windows. If you can find a well-priced Roland Garros model, snap it up, as this rare trim packs in almost every possible extra, including leather seats. High-end Allure trim arrived in 2012, and this and the basic Active model became the only options as Peugeot readied the Mk1 3008 for its replacement. Which is the best Peugeot 3008 Mk1 version. We’d avoid Active cars if possible, simply because 3008s in Sport and Exclusive trims have a lot more kit and shouldn’t cost that much more to buy second-hand. In terms of engines, the 148bhp variant is the pick of the petrols, but opting for diesel power will give you a far greater number of cars to choose from. The 1.6-litre diesel is fairly strong, it’s economical and there are plenty available, but if you do a lot of long journeys or regularly take to the motorway, the 2.0-litre diesel is worth seeking out for its extra power. While the hybrid was too expensive to be a popular choice for original 3008 customers, its second-hand values are the opposite and make it easier to recommend as a used buy. Just be aware the heavy batteries make the suspension a little bumpier on bad roads, and expect fuel consumption to be in the low 50s, rather than the claimed low 70s. Running costs The original 3008 is by no means expensive to run, but don’t expect it to be as cheap as the latest SUV crossovers, as engine and weight-saving technology have moved on in the seven years since the Mk1 3008 was launched. As mentioned, the hybrid model is meant to return 74mpg, but most owners report a deficit of around 20mpg, which is pretty common for a diesel-electric car. Road tax will cost you nothing with the hybrid, while the petrols will be ?185-?230 a year. The diesels incur either ?130 or ?145 a year in Vehicle Excise Duty but the 161bhp model is more expensive, at ?210 a year. Peugeot initially advised that most 3008s should be serviced every 20,000 miles or two years (whichever came first), but this was revised in 2012 when annual maintenance became the norm. We recommend that, as a second-hand buyer, you book your car in for a check-up once a year. This costs ?345 at a Peugeot dealer if your car is three years old or more, which is a reasonable price. It’s probably worth shopping around independent garages for new brakes, though. The 3008 has a reputation for heavy pad and disc wear, with sticking callipers exacerbating the problem. Front tyre wear can also be heavy. The tyre pressure monitoring system has been known play up, though recalibrating or replacing the valves should fix this. 9 More tyre niggles: some cars come with a space-saver spare wheel, while others require you to make do with a can of sealant and a compressor. We recommend the former, as the latter can leave you stranded if the puncture is a serious one. 9 Some owners report issues with the electronic parking brake, with dashboard warning lights appearing even though the brake appears to be working perfectly well. Also, be sure to check the LED running lights work as they should, because replacing these is expensive and requires removing the front bumper. If you hear a warning bell that sounds like a gong, this signals the car’s battery is failing and needs replacement. In addition, check all buttons and switches work as they should, as electrical gremlins aren’t unknown. 9 The Peugeot 3008 has been subject to six recalls, which is neither an impressive nor a hugely worrying number. Cars built from June to September 2009 should have had a faulty windscreen wiper mechanism fixed, while 2.0-litre diesels made between October 2009 and July 2010 will have required a potential fuel leak attending to. Noisy rear brake callipers (caused by incorrectly tightened nuts) caused a recall in 2013, but only two cars were actually affected by this. Finally, diesels made from September 2009 to December 2014 were subject to another recall concerning a potential fuel leak. Most recalls should have been attended to by now, but see the DVSA’s recall checker tool for more information, including pertinent Vehicle Identification Numbers. Alternatives The popularity of SUV crossovers means many other car makers offer a rival to the 3008. The Nissan Qashqai is the default choice for many, though prices are higher than the 3008’s and isn’t without its problems. Our Mk1 Qashqai buying guide has more information. Verdict 9 Buyers of second-hand SUV crossovers are spoilt for choice and, while the Peugeot 3008 is not without its niggles, many owners have only good words to say about it. It’s also a very practical car for families, with a driving experience that impresses more than its looks may do. The 3008’s greatest asset, however, is the fact that it’s significantly more affordable than many of its rivals. When the Peugeot 3008 Mk1 first went on sale, it cost between ?20,000 and ?25,000. It replaced the 3008 MPV - a dowdy, pudgy thing - with a good-looking and comfortable SUV that's since become the best-selling car in its class across Europe. Whatever the 3008 is, don’t think that it's an off-roader, though. Peugeot goes as far as describing the 3008 as sporty - we'll take issue with that. Where the 3008 bests all rivals, however, is in its ultra-sharp styling and super-simple interior, which features a shrunken steering wheel, with digital dials above and a driver-canted centre console complete with large touchscreen infotainment system. The boldest change is the grille, which is now frameless and extends right to the edges of the front fascia. Really, though, this facelift is largely cosmetic - there simply wasn't much that needed changing. All models are well -equipped, though - you get keyless start, dual-zone climate control and smartphone connectivity regardless of trim. Step one level up to Allure and you'll get the new, larger 10.0-inch touchscreen. And GT models look the best, with large alloy wheels and an optional 'Black Pack'. They're refined and powerful enough for most buyers, while offering impressive running costs. They're also available across more of the 3008 trim levels than the more powerful options.
