The wiring is there but mostly missing. I checked compression and shows 95 average cyc. I think this motor is worth fixing and have its day in the water. I just need help. A wiring diagram to this motor would be helpful. The harness that plugs into side of motor is there. Everythting else is missing. So I am not to sure what wires need to go where. I am sure fixing this will also fix my not having spark issue as well. The ignition is magneto, with two sets of points and a single condenser under the distributor pully. It has a single ign coil inside the dissy body. With all wires disconnected, the motor should have spark since the ign switch only grounds out the points. Check you local library for a service manual. BTW the fuel mix is 24 parts gasoline to 1 part TCW-3 oil. I have ordered me a service manual for this old girl and I am sure this will help. I took apart the distrubutor and and verified all parts in tact and will replace points to see if I gain a spark. There is no doubt this is a long road to recovery. Thanks For your alls help!! The points work together to fire two cylinders each, so they both must be gapped correctly so the plugs fire on time. One set of points opens, followed by the second set of points, which actually fires the plug, then this process repeats for the other three cylinders, alternating which points fire the plug. I am unsure of the difference you will have, although Im sure someone will jump in to let you know. Sorry if it is incorrect, but may help some. Good luck. I found it strange though that my local boat shop can not find the pionts and condensor. They claim they cant look that far back. Does it matter about the pionts as long as they are pionts or is it by model basis?? Soory I am just new at this boat thing and restoring this looks to be a lot of fun. The were common and easy to find. The wiring diagram is correct for that motor, except instead of the killer wire going to two seperate magneto systems, it went to a sing;e connection on the dissy. You might trythe points from a 35-40HP big twin (1959-1968), and see if they fit. Unfortunately I live in the land of fruits and nuts (aka California) and the lawmakers arbitrarily made a law prohibiting the use of two stokes on California waters. So I am proverbially up the creek. The motor cant be put on anything because of the new boating laws. You can try to sell the motor on ebay or craigs list but to us we cant do anything with it. IM sorry we could not help you out. Try to sell the motor someone might want it for parts or something. Maybe you'll get a few hundred dollars for it. Thanks for the call. EDIT: no selling on the forum. The handbook is intended to guide the mechanic in the process of fixing or restoring a boat motor to working order. Johnson outboard repair manuals cover every aspect of repair and it’s divided into several main sections. Below is a breakdown of information generally found in a Johnson outboard repair manual. Typical Johnson outboard repair manuals contain the following chapters: Downloadable repair manuals are often more helpful because the table of contents contain clickable chapters and subchapters that navigate the user to the selected repair procedures with the click of the mouse. The introduction will contain models covered in the manual, how to identify model and serial numbers, model designation, as well as information on how to use the repair manual. Some of the service specifications might include torque specifications, special tools required to perform a repair job properly, and shop aids. Maintenance information often includes: Depending on what’s being repaired, information might include: Writing diagrams are usually black and white illustrations of specific parts and list wire colors and functions. Hose routing diagrams show intended route which are especially helpful for mechanics performing complete engine overhaul. Troubleshooting guides help the mechanic trace and correct faults in the Johnson outboards mechanical or electrical system. Using a troubleshooting guide can be a fast and effective way of pinpointing a malfunction. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I just got one of these motors But there is no way to tell what year model. Scanning for 20hp in your list of manuals, i am only seeing 1990-2001 listed. Founded by Ole Evinrude in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1907, it was formerly owned by the publicly traded Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) since 1935 but OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2000. It was working as a subsidiary of Canadian Multinational Bombardier Recreational Products but was discontinued in May of 2020.OMC partnered with FICHT of Germany to introduce direct injection. Extensive and thorough durability testing took place to assess the rigor and longevity of the design but the first design did not pass testing standards. At the beginning, the company tried retrofitting the previous design in order to bring the motors up to the new standards. These modifications were not carefully engineered or designed and caused significant engine failures, most notably the powerhead failure. This eventually resulted in a recall of that generation of motors. The losses on these motors, the loss of reputation and the surge of competition from Japan and Mercury pushed the company into bankruptcy in 2000.This improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, oil consumption, noise levels and maintenance needs. This is due in part to a pin-point oiling system that only applies oil to the necessary components, unlike the original two-stroke motors. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. ( November 2010 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) Interested in mechanics from an early age, Evinrude became an apprentice machinist at age 16 and eventually a master pattern maker, as well. The story surrounding Evinrude's invention of the outboard boat engine revolves around a picnic that Cary and Evinrude enjoyed on Okauchee Lake, in the lake country west of Milwaukee, two and one-half miles from shore. Cary expressed a desire for a dish of ice cream and Evinrude rowed back to shore for it. Of course, the ice cream was melted by the time he returned, but Evinrude, inspired by the incident, was determined to design an engine that would replace the oar as a means of boat propulsion. In 1907, Evinrude founded Evinrude Motors in Milwaukee. In 1921 he and Bessie formed the ELTO Outboard Motor Company (ELTO standing for Evinrude's Light Twin Outboard). This new outboard engine was also very successful, and in 1929 the ELTO company merged with the original Evinrude company (since renamed the Outboard Marine Corporation ) and the Lockwood Motor Company, with Evinrude the president of this new company.Ole Evinrude died the following year on July 12 in Milwaukee, and the company was taken over by their son, Ralph. In 1936 the Evinrude company merged with the Johnson Motor Company to form the Outboard Marine Corporation. During World War II the company manufactured motors for various types of military marine craft.Given annually by the New York Boat Show, this award is presented in recognition of an individual's contributions to the growth of recreational boating.Evinrude has also been used in multiple James Bond movies, including a scene from Live and Let Die.By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
