The Toyota Camry is best known for its smooth and quiet ride. The Camry holds its value well and can last very long with good care. Of course, there were some problems that used car buyers should be aware of. Toyota Camry problems: Suspension problems like bad sway bar links and bushings, rear control arm bushings and rear strut mounts are fairly common. The repairs are not very expensive. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket(s) are often reported. Several owners mentioned a leaking water pump. If a bad water pump is not replaced in time, a lack of coolant may cause the engine to overheat.Unstable idle and stalling (often after battery replacement) could be caused by carbon buildup inside the throttle body. Cleaning the throttle body might help with this type of problem. Replacing the relay solves the problem in most cases. A Toyota dealer should have the part; it's not very expensive. An alternator might need to be replaced at higher mileage. The symptom of a bad alternator is the battery-shaped warning light coming on while driving. There have been reports about stripped threads for the head bolts in the 2.4L engine cylinder block; this repair is expensive, although the number of complaints about this issue is fairly small. Toyota issued a service bulletin describing the repair. Google 'Toyota bulletin T-SB-0015-11' to read more. Watch this great video from Eric O. explaining the repair. There have been a few recalls; check at the NHTSA website. This engine has been used in many Toyota vehicles, including the RAV4 and Highlander SUVs. The optional 3.0-liter 24-valve 1MZ-FE V6 is smooth and powerful. From 2004, the SE V6 trims were equipped with a 3.3-liter V6 (3MZ-FE). A manual transmission is only available with a 4-cylinder engine. Timing belt or chain: The 4-cylinder 2.4L engine has a maintenance-free timing chain. Both 3.0L V6 and 3.3L V6 engines have a timing belt that needs to be replaced at regular intervals, read more below. Handling and ride: The Camry is a pleasure to drive, especially on the highway. The ride is very soft and smooth; road bumps are absorbed well by the suspension. The steering is light too. The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine is pretty quick off the line and provides enough power for everyday driving; the V6 is strong and smooth. This means that with mostly highway driving, you can get up to 466 miles (670 km) to a tank; the fuel tank capacity is 18.5 gallons or 70 liters. Pros: Good on gas (4-cylinder models), comfortable ride, roomy interior, spacious trunk, easy to maintain, resale value, above-average reliability. Cons: Front seats lack lateral support, paint scratches easy, poor scores for side crash protection without side airbags, 2.4L engine issues. Overall: The Camry is a natural choice if you are looking for a used family car. We recommend the V6 engine, considering some issues with the 2.4L motor. Of course, not all 2.4L engines had the problem with the stripped cylinder block threads and some have already been repaired. Here is the video of the Toyota Camry hitting 300,000 miles. The Accord has a firmer ride. Mazda 6 offers more sporty handling but is less roomy and has a wide turning radius. The Malibu is cheaper, but is not as reliable. What to look for when buying a used Toyota Camry: If possible check service records; avoid cars that have been previously overheated. If the coolant level is low, it might be an indication of coolant leaks. If you are buying a used Camry with a 4-cylinder engine, it must be carefully inspected for coolant leaks at the back of the engine. If you notice a blue or white smoke from exhaust, even if it's just a small amount at a startup, the car should be avoided. When test driving a used Toyota Camry, there should be no noise when driving over bumps or rough roads. Read more tips: How to inspect a used car - illustrated guide. Have the car properly inspected by your mechanic before buying. If possible we would even advise to get the cooling system pressure test done in a repair shop. The most important question is: does the engine have a problem with stripped thread of the rear head bolts. If during an inspection, coolant leaks are found at the back of the 2.4L engine, avoid the car. Similar cars: What you should know before buying a used car What mileage is OK for a used car? Watch out for coolant leaks and keep the engine coolant topped up; overheating may result in very expensive repairs. Change the transmission fluid when it gets dirty. According to the 2006 Camry owner's manual, an engine air filter and a cabin filter need to be replaced at 30,000 miles. The cabin filter is located behind the glove box. Options available with the XR trim included a sunroof, body kit, and 17-inch (430 mm) alloy wheels. Also included on all XRS models were anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, 16-inch alloy wheels, and cruise control. In 2003, 17-inch wheels could be had, but only on cars without a sunroof. An option combining 17-inch (430 mm) wheels and a sunroof became available the second year of production. While its 11.5:1 compression ratio was a large factor in its performance, the engine could change to a second cam profile at higher RPM through Toyota's VVTL-i and was designed for operation up to 8500 RPM.The recall notice cites two bolts in each of the front doors as potentially causing the window to come off the track and break.Toyota has advised all owners of the following cars to replace these faulty frontal passenger airbags or all airbags, depending of which version is. Toyota of Mexico has notified PROFECO that in the Mexican market exists 618 vehicles in addition to these three recalled vehicles. The Matrix comes only in two trim levels to Mexico: Base and XR.The XR trim became exclusive for Canada, and the S trim was released only in the U.S., while AWD remained available in both markets after 2009.The recall notices states that improperly lubricated driver's side power window master switch may develop a “notchy” or sticky feel, and that improper aftermarket lubrication may present a fire hazard.Archived from the original on 2008-05-12. Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking available from 2015, standard from 2018.The five-speed automatic transmission is smooth. The sizable interior is quiet and is outfitted with quality, well-fitting materials. Handling is responsive, but tire grip is limited. This version of the Camry received a Poor in the IIHS side-crash test when evaluated without the optional side- or head-protection airbags. The dealershipDrum brakes were fine.We had the rear struts replaced and the noise was eliminated and a couple of months later replaced the front struts as well.It finally got so bad it had to be done. The repair shop recommended replacement of all four calipers. No grinding of the rotor was necessary. First failure of right front caliper occurred at 125,000 miles. My mechanic adjusted it and for a brief time the E brake held properly.Same problem developed a year later. Then the clear coat began bubbling on the rear bumper.I had a Toyota dealer try to fix it a few years ago but the problem quickly returned. The dealer is a long drive away and I don't have faith in them with this problem. He told me it was likely to come back on in the next few days but it never did. So I will wait til my smog test, due this year, if I pass smog test, I will consider it not a problem. If the car fails, I will buy a new car.Driver must quickly brake hard and throw transmission into neutral or shut off engine. Performance then returns to normal. To relieve the problem driver must brake hard and quickly put transmission in neutral. Engine will race for a few seconds, then return to idle. Problem was presented to Toyota dealer (Molle Toyota) in Kansas City area in November 2012 but they could not find any problem because it was not happening at the time. They said there was no manufacturer’s warranty on our model year (2005) even though they were providing a warranty on other models or model years that had a similar problem with sudden acceleration. Car was also taken to two other repair shops for analysis of problem, but neither could solve it. It still happens intermittently a couple of times per month. We have just learned to live with it even though it is a safety concern. We do not feel we could sell or trade the car without disclosing this problem, which probably makes the car unsaleable. Following are excerpts from government reports issued in 2011 in which they tested a 2005 Toyota for the same problems we are experiencing. From NHTSA report, “Technical Assessment of Toyota Electronic Throttle Control Systems” (February 2011), executive summary, page vi footnote 1: Footnote 1. In this report, “unintended acceleration” refers to the occurrence of any degree of acceleration that the vehicle driver did not purposely cause to occur. The car has over 220,000 miles and I am not surprised the alternator failed.I did NOT get stuck on the side of the road.Switched brands, and got 25 or 30 thousand miles out of it, but when I finally lost one again two weeks ago, it was a very sudden and extreme failure. Car died in traffic and had to be towed, and for multiple reasons cost me WAY too much for such a simple repair.Have had starter replaced 3 times and problem continues.I had to have the car towed to the dealership for repair. It had a faulty throttle body. They told me it was a known problem, but Toyota chose not to issue a recall. They repaired it at no cost. Poor decision on Toyota's part not to recall. I was fortunate to be driving on local roads when the stalls occurred.Took 2 days to do job. This caused head gasket, bettery, fuel pump to be replaced after car had to be towed in. The alternator shorted out units.Needs to be replaced. It will intake disc(single disc player)but in load mode it remains in such for 10 seconds or so and ejects as always did normally. Was in winter and unit always very hot when front vents or defrost vents in use. Online forums have some of same but inconclusive and no help. They could not fix it, told me to drive it until it fails. It failed at 115000 miles when all warranty expired, and I have not been able to afford a repair since. Despite their difference in rank there was no great disparity in age between the two men, and from the first when Calder had come inexperienced and fresh from England, but with a great ardour to acquire a comprehensive experience, Durrance in his reticent way had been at pains to show the newcomer considerable friendship. Calder, therefore, might be likely to know. Below, she supposed, there were caves. The landscape was a perfect setting for smugglers, and the hill-track by which she had come was their mule-road, she thought, across the moor.
