The 2000’s were marked by plenty of blatant homophobia and general cultural intolerance of gay people across Hungary. Things can get really wild here, but that’s half the fun of Budapest. Just use your common sense and stay safe! Budapest is a very safe city but still, all travelers should take caution in crowded areas or at night in bars with valuables. While Vienna may be only a few hours away, in terms of attitude it is a world-away and other ex-soviet cities like Prague and Tallinn are more LGBT tolerant. Overall gay life in Budapest requires a common-sense approach which will generally ensure you have no issues exploring this beautiful and diverse city. As much about achieving full social equality as celebrating queerness in all its diversity, this Pride has plenty of vibrant club parties, a fun street parade and other associated events making it worth planning a gay vacation around! The Bath’s also play host to epic pool parties in the summer months, although it is mostly hetero-fun.Take a peek inside to step back into the glory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire or for a real treat try to get tickets to one of the world-class performances held here. History buffs will not what to miss a trip here, but be warned: some of the stories are pretty intense. For extra fun, why not make the trip at night whenever landmark is spectacularly lit up. With a repertoire covering musical styles such as operetta, gypsy music, and Hungarian-related classical music, the Danube Symphony Orchestra leads the grandiose concert, in cooperation with professional ballet dancers serving as confirmation to the fact that music and dance are inseparable. Enjoy unlimited free public transportation, free or discounted entry to over 100 museums and special sights, discounts in restaurants and much more. Learn about wine production at small family-owned wineries. You’ll marvel at the beautifully renovated royal palace, which is the second-largest Baroque chateau in the world. Some Budapest hotels are more popular with queer travelers due to their location and inclusive environment or vibe, which are features here. There are currently no exclusively gay hotels in Budapest. Of course, there are also hundred’s more hotel and hostel options in Budapest if none of these suit your desired budget, facilities or area The elegant rooms feature a mix of contemporary and antique furnishings, many with city-view balconies but if that’s not enough just head downstairs to the famed New York Cafe (where literary minds would gather during the Bella Epoque). There is also an opulent spa offering a rainbow-hued grotto of indoor pools, baths, and heated rooms. Truly a hotel like no other, this is our favorite place to stay in Budapest for old-world throwbacks and ritzy affairs. There is also an uber-posh restaurant, luxe spa, indoor pool, sauna and opulent dining room where breakfast is served under an iconic domed stained-glass ceiling. Fun, frivolous and straddling the border of modern and classical, the rooftop bar here is one of the best in the city and the rooms are simply gorgeous. Guests can enjoy a rich complimentary buffet breakfast, free cheese and wine reception every afternoon and access to the glamorous pool and spa set-up. Deep, sensuous reds theming, fabulous dining and exceptional service always the Buddha Bar Hotel a popular option. The best little hotel in Budapest. Each room is utterly unique and Bohem offer a variety of bed configurations making them useful for groups or unconventional travel partnerships. Their Budapest location is no different, except each room as fabulous balconies and plenty of vibrant colours. Polite staff, great breakfast, the Ibis is perfect for a no-surprises stay in Gay Budapest. The breakfast, while not included, is also excellent value. Just make sure to bring your earplugs. Why Not is the perfect place to discover the more casual side of gay life in Budapest, either by organizing a meeting here or just chatting to the staff and other tables (especially when sitting on the outdoor terrace). Fun cocktails, craft beers and special events weekly including karaoke and bingo. Different events throughout the week, normally karaoke and retro disco, with low prices and a welcoming owner. Live music, classy surroundings and some of the best cocktails in all of Budapest. Perfect for those who prefer cosmopolitan vibes over flaming queens, disco balls and rainbow flags. Different themes, parties, and music most weekends check their Facebook page in advance to see what is going on. The only gay club in Budapest so far, but luckily it is always amazing! A no-attitude, frivolous atmosphere where the DJ pumps out music from the last three decades until the early morning. Held once a month across different venues in Budapest. Just take a look at our Gay Budapest Map if you need help deciding which is closest. The gay sauna’s in Budapest mostly get crowded on weeknights after 5 pm and on Sunday afternoons. We also found Google Maps helpful for displaying the busiest times for most locations. Want more? There is a steam bath, maze, XXX porn rooms, private and semi-private cabins, bar, and glory holes. If you’re after a gay massage in Budapest this is also a simple option. This is not a place to play around through with increased security, but nothing stops you from meeting some eye candy and heading back to your hotel. Since the baths were founded during the time of Ottoman rule, many of the key elements of a Turkish bath remain including a Turkish dome and octagonal pool. Just like visiting Gay Istanbul or Gay Antalya. The bath has six therapy pools and one swimming pool where the temperature is in between 10-42C. Three separate bars with plenty of fun areas including a dark room, sling, glory hole, porn room, prison cell and more. Free entry but minimum consumption applies. Very modern but the Coxx Club owner and staff can be quite rude. Plus films, fashion, pop culture, gay events, and much, much more. Take in local history, get a workout and enjoy those long Norwegian summer days. Take an extra SD card for your camera as the colorful villages, soaring mountains and waterfalls will keep your camera shutter busy! Enjoy a meal of the freshest seafood you have ever tasted, or visit during the summer when a huge outdoor fish market covers the adjacent square. Bergen was once was Europe’s largest wooden city, but today this and Bryggen is largely all that is left. There are also beautiful views back to the city and surrounding mountains from here. Bergen’s history is deeply linked with fishing, as is most of Norway, and these museums explore’s its past importance, the shift that occurred after oil was found here and how Norway plans to lead the world in sustainable fishing in the future. There are currently no exclusively gay hotels in Bergen.Colorful suites, funky designer details, warm hospitality and one of the best hotel breakfasts in the world (which we needed after the nightlife in Gay Bergen). Each of the hotel’s 97 rooms is uniquely designed with invigorating splashes of color and luxurious open rainfall showers. Some rooms even feature a sexy, tempting open showers offering a slightly erotic experience for gay travelers on a romantic escape to Bergen, or if you’re on your own try for a room with a deep free-standing tub to indulge in while Bergen inevitably rains cats and dogs. Sure, there are no gay hotels in Bergen but when you get sexy bare-ass musicians standing guard outside your room what more could you possibly want? It’s high class with a touch of burlesque. Other stand out features where the Art Nouveau stained glass ceiling in the lobby originally made for a castle in England, the extensive breakfast buffet and casual burger restaurants onsite with innovative monthly creations. Beautiful suites and an interesting take on Scandinavian chic meet old-world charm. Modern, chic almost Great Gatsby elegance (but somehow down-to-earth as this is still Norway). The Scandic is a well-known chain in Scandinavia and has received awards for not only accepting but actively promoting diversity and inclusion in its hotels and wider society. Nice lobby hang-out space and a cool check-in terminal to get in and out in a breeze. Managed normally by a company you can enjoy bigger rooms, kitchenettes, and local neighborhood locations at a lower price than your standard hotel. You also have more privacy here if you plan to have guests over. Sure, its nothing glamorous but it has a lovely rooftop terrace, low prices, and plenty of other young budget travelers to meet up with. If you don’t mind sharing a dorm and want to save from NOK, then this is your best bet.If you want to experience the gay nightlife, you can head to the only gay club in Bergen which is always busy. Otherwise, lesbians and gay men mix freely with straight people in bars and clubs across the city. Being such a tolerant society, you are unlikely to experience any issues with displays of affection in public in Norway and will be welcomed in most clubs and bars. Casual is usually the dress code here, but those Viking’s are so effortlessly chic this might require a bit more effort from us foreigners. Alcohol is not cheap here, and you must be 20 or over to consume spirits, so house parties are very popular in Bergen. If you get the opportunity to ask around on the gay apps for happening events and if you find a new queer event happening, please contact us.Open Wednesday to Saturday with the best dance floor in Bergen and a fabulous line up of events. We are talking tiki parties, glow-in-the-dark, 90’s themed nights and Ru Paul Drag Race viewing parties (be sure to wear all your Drag Race Merch !) Basically, you can expect unpretentious vibes with your queer family, a sizzling club atmosphere, dance realness and enough Eurovision pop to full a lifetime. Probably the best pub in Bergen they have 150 bottled beers and 54 Norwegian and Scandinavian beers on tap. We enjoyed the company and conversation, just not the hangover. A vinyl record and music store which seamlessly integrated a selection of beer which you can enjoy as you browse. You get ponchos and groves and can spend as long as you want to enjoy an entire bar made of ice complete with carved versions of famous art.We loved sitting listening to live music and sipping Spanish wine dreaming of sultry Salamanca. They have delicious food, but we came to enjoy drinks with locals and to admire the view out of the harbor-facing windows or from the outdoor terrace. It can be a little pricey, even for Norway, and get more nightclub-ish in the late evening. Cozy in winter with outdoor seating in summer, this laidback bar focusses on crafting innovative yet delicious cocktails. Their No Way Jose (a smokey citrus Margarita) had us reminiscing of Guadalajara, and the Heyerdahl Hooch (a Spiced Tropical Tiki concoction) transported us out of rainy Bergen to a tropical beach in Hawaii. After our visit we also don’t think any Bergen gay saunas will be opening up soon, there just isn’t the demand. We visited the Bergen Hammam, which 100 is not a gay sauna, and is more like those we encountered in Istanbul, with steam baths, massage services, and a nice mixed social environment. Sure, you might meet someone here, but we wouldn’t recommend it for cruising in Bergen. Normally meeting at the bottom of the Bergen funicular every Tuesday at 18.30 but times may change and it only during the summer to join the Facebook page and ask ahead of time.Plus films, fashion, pop culture, gay events, and much, much more. Work with us Contact us Subscribe Subscribe now to our gay travel newsletter Russia gay travel: is it safe for LGBTQ travellers. Stefan Arestis Feb 1, 2021 Categories Posted in Russia Home Destinations Europe Russia For the video of this song, the two band members, Lena Katina and Julia Volkova, were running around in the rain dressed in schoolgirl outfits and kissing, making out in the rain. Obviously the band were (quite successfully!) targeting a very specific heterosexual male demographic. We also write about our first-hand experience exploring the country as a gay couple together with all our safety tips for fellow LGBTQ travelers who plan to visit Russia. Stay safe online in Russia Over the past few years, the Russian government has been monitoring and censoring online use more and more. For your peace of mind, make sure you get a VPN so that you can use all your favourite gay dating apps and surf the web anonymously whilst in Russia. If you're openly gay in Russia, you're going to face major problems, whether you're a local or a tourist. It's tough, it's hard and it pays to stay in the closet for your own safety. More about this below. In terms of LGBTQ rights in Russia, it's obviously not great, but we'll start this section with the good news. It is legal to be gay in Russia. Why Russia has a bad reputation. Up until the late 2000s Russia had the sort of LGBTQ standing you'd expect from an Eastern European country, namely that the situation for the local gay community was not great, but ripe for positive change. Sadly, over the past decade, this positive change went the opposite direction completely, particularly in June 2013 when the awful anti-gay propaganda law was introduced. Under the banner of “protecting children from being exposed to homonormativity”, the anti-gay propaganda law outlaws anything that promotes “non-traditional relationships” among minors. Worst of all, this law has led to a surge in LGBTQ hate crime in Russia, along with state-sponsored violence such as the gay concentration camps in Chechnya, which you can find out more about in the 2020 BBC documentary, “Welcome to Chechnya”. To get an idea of the level of homophobia and outright stupidity prevalent amongst Russian politicians, check out this interview from October 2013 between Stephen Fry and Vitaly Milonov. Milonov is one of the most prominent politicians in Putin's “United Russia” party and he was also the principal sponsor of the awful 2013 anti-gay propaganda law: Is Russia safe for LGBTQ travelers. Just before travelling on the Trans Siberian across Russia in 2014, we were nervous. After all, we all know Russia has a terrible reputation for LGBTQ rights, particularly in light of the awful anti-gay propaganda law passed in 2013. All our friends and family warned us: “you better be careful in Russia boys, probably best avoid going altogether!” FREE DOWNLOADABLE BONUS How to Stay Safe Whilst Traveling. This is why we've put together our Ultimate Travel Safety Checklist for LGBTQ travelers. With hindsight, we are so glad we ignored this advice. We travelled through Russia for 2 months and survived unscathed. However, we did feel like we went back in the closet, especially in public, where we pretended to be “mates” rather than a couple in love. We found that if you respect the fact that Russian society is very conservative and prefers low key behaviour from people, then you'll be absolutely fine. We also strongly believe that going there, supporting gay friendly businesses, meeting and making friends with the local LGBTQ community would be far more productive than boycotting them altogether. At the end of the day, whether you choose to travel to Russia, is a personal choice for you. We are not saying you shouldn't visit. Russia is a beautiful country, rich in culture and history that it would be a shame to skip. It also has a thriving LGBTQ community living their day-to-day lives, particularly in Moscow, which has quite a large gay scene. As long as you have common sense, have your wits about you at all times and avoid any LGBTQ activism, you'll be fine. The Nomadic Boys arrive in Russia for their Trans Siberian adventure. Best gay scenes in Russia Surprisingly, Russia has a gay scene, particularly in the two main cities: Moscow and St Petersburg. Moscow, in particular, has quite an impressive number of bars, clubs, cruising parties and saunas. 1. The gay scene of Moscow Stefan first went to Russia in 2007 before he met Seb and partied at Central Station MSK, which is still today, the biggest gay club in Moscow. Over a decade later, Central Station is still going strong in defiance of the anti-gay law in place. This place is huge, 5 stories high, and a really fun night out on weekends. The doormen outside are very curt and stern, but all part of the notorious Soviet-style “face control” to avoid any homophobic violence inside. After a night out at Central Station, we headed to BoyZ Club for the after-party. Other big and super popular gay clubs in Moscow to check out include MONO, Three Monkeys and Propaganda. There are also cruising parties like Hunters, which is the biggest and the best, and also Imperia. In terms of gay saunas in Moscow, there are many. Some of the more popular include VODA, XL Spa and Paradise. 2. The gay scene of St Petersburg We loved St Petersburg a lot. It's like an outdoor museum, full of architectural gems like The Winter Palace, the Spilled Church, and the Mikhalmikhailovsky Castle. It's the most European-like city in Russia, and definitely one of the more liberal-minded places in Russia. The gay scene of St Petersburg is smaller than Moscow, but still buzzing with life. It is named after the fictional gay bar in the Police Academy movies. It's also quite large, with 2 large bar areas, dance floor, VIP area and darkroom. Other gay clubs and bars in St Petersburg include Cabaret and Malevich, as well as a cruising bar called Bunker. We WILL have our double bed in Russia. Top experiences for gay travelers in Russia There are a lot of pretty impressive bucket list items to check out in Russia. This is our lowdown of some of our not-to-miss highlights in Russia: DON'T MISS OUT. Join our newsletter Subscribe now to receive in-depth FREE travel guides, along with inspiring stories, savvy planning tips, and exclusive discounts on gay tours. The Red Square (and Lenin's Mausoleum) The Red Square is possibly the most famous location in the whole of Russia. All of Moscow's streets (and then the highways that connect to those streets) originate here, so it's often called the central square of Moscow. This is also the location of Lenin's Mausoleum, the Kremlin and the colourfully crazy looking St. Basil's Cathedral. This whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit while you're in Moscow. Joining a tour of the Red Square and St Basil's Cathedral is also the best way to get the most from your time while learning some of the history behind this important cultural landmark of Russia. The Winter Palace in St. Petersburg Another incredible building that blew us away was the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. It used to be the official residence of the Russian Emperors between 1732 to 1917. It's an impressive building, built in the Elizabethan Baroque style. Nowadays the palace forms part of the State Hermitage Museum, which is the second-largest art museum in the world. Mikhailovsky Palace in St. Petersburg Another stunning palace you need to see in St. Petersburg is the neoclassical Mikhailovsky Palace. Originally the home of Grand Duke Michael and his wife Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, the beautiful building now houses the State Russian Museum. Here you can see the world's largest collection of Russian art, covering all main trends from over a thousand years. You can join a guided tour of the museum if you're interested in learning about Russian art and the building itself. We also really enjoyed exploring the extensive gardens behind the palace as well as the Field of Mars and Summer Garden just beyond that. A journey on the Trans Siberian We took a journey on the famous Trans-Siberian Express when we visited Russia and we would definitely recommend other visitors make the effort to experience this once-in-a-lifetime journey. Stretching 9,289 kilometres (5,772 miles) across Russia from Moscow to Vladivostock, the Trans-Siberian is the longest railway line in the world. You can also explore the Trans-Mongolian route which gives you the chance to travel through three different countries (Russia, Mongolia and China) from Irkutsk to Beijing. Whichever part you choose, it's truly a train trip you'll never forget. Lake Baikal (Olkhon island) During our travels on the Trans-Siberian Express, we organised a stopover in Irkutsk to break up the journey and give us a chance to explore the region. We then joined a tour from Irkutsk to Lake Baikal, which is the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume and the world's deepest lake. It's so big it seems like you're standing next to the ocean, not a lake, except there's no salt in the water. We also visited Olkhon Island which is the biggest island within Lake Baikal.
