It's clearly a repackaging of an earlier (2009) edition of the same book. That was a larger volume where perhaps this text was readable. But the publishers have shrunk the whole book down in proportion into a smaller trim size (cheaper) and put a new cover on it. By doing this, they don't have to redesign the book's layout BUT it means that the text and all the imagery just gets shrunk in proportion.As the subtitle says it is an illustrated guide to their origins and meanings, the illustrations are very varied, from line ink drawings, photographs of relics and artifacts, museum pieces, very fine paintings of myths (some of which are large two page spread colour picture prints). There is great use of indents, bolding of text, subheadings in caps and colours to divide up pages in interesting fashions. Each of the illustrations has bold type detail next to it with little arrows indicating that it is the explanatory note attached to the picture. Flicking through the book, like if you have little time to sit and read, and reading these alone can be very informative. There is a very good contents and index, both are very clear and easy to read. The book is structured by territory and period, so, for instance, there is an underlined heading for Europe but subheadings Classical Europe; Northern Europe; Western Europe; Central and Eastern Europe.
