Again, one goes to Ake because of Rider's enthusiasm for this surreal place in which both the nineteen century mansion and the half ruined machinery of an henequen hacienda sit in the midst of great Mayan plaza bordered on one side by a colonnaded temple built at the top of a platform reached by a megalithic stair that looks as it had been built by a Minoan architect. These recommendations and others allow expanding travel in the Mayan area well beyond the more commonly visited sites.While some guidebooks provide depth and others breadth, this one provides both, leavened with a very good measure of sly wit. His comments about the appearances of the gates of the huge All Inclusive (AI) resorts along the Riviera Maya still make me snicker every time I drive past one. On the other hand, Mr. Rider's historical and archaeological assessments are erudite enough to please the slightly scholarly. A more detailed look at it showed that it was worth carrying in my hand luggage and then familiarity with it meant that I carried it everywhere, however hot the weather and however long the walk. Nick Rider is an excellent writer. He has a thorough understanding of the history, both colonial and Mayan, and he seems to have gone everywhere and seen everything. I can't vouch for the sections on Cancun, since I didn't go there, but for guidance on Puerto Morelos, Tulum, Merida and Valladolid, and excursions from those places he is spot on. He doesn't try to sound 'hip', like the authors of the other guides I bought, thank God, but he writes for the serious traveller. His general advice seems good. He rightly says, for example, that Merida is the safest city of its size anywhere and he shows a genuine affection fo the places he describes. My copy is now tatty and thumbed but I will keep it to remind me of a grand holiday. It let me down only once, in Cuidad de Carmen, where it had no map of the city, and its hotel recommendations were incomplete and misleading. Otherwise it was accurate and up to date. I recommend it highly to travelers who want comfort but not luxury, and who like to travel fast and intensively.They are the most intelligently written and informative of all the guide books currently on the market. Although they can be a bit dry, they are normally written by people who really know their subject well. Cadogan guides assume you have a brain and you want to find out as much about the local area as possible - while still providing the essential travel tips. This one covers the Mayan region of Southern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Where it excels is its descriptions of the amazing archaeological sites you will encounter, their history and the relationship between indigenous Maya people and those descended from the Conquistadors.
