Might not be a big deal to some, but for me it was annoying to go back and forth between the text and the figure and having to turn a page to do so. I also didn't like how they moved all of the answers to the written labs and chapter review questions to the appendix in the back of the book. An older version of the book I had put the answers on the last page of the chapter, which made it easier to check your answers. The author clearly and thoroughly covers all the ICND1 objectives, i know so because i read this book and passed my exam. Also the author makes the learning a fun experience with tons of hands on labs, questions, and written assignments. Ill defiantly be purchasing the ICND2 book from Todd, thanks again!I have recommended it to many other students and am looking to take the ICDN1, which this preps you for, towards the end of March 2014. I will update after the exam on how accurate this book.Clearly written, it has chapter reviews that are relevant to the test and review the material well. Great find! Book was also affordable as well as delivered within 3 days. The book apparently assumes you have some real hardware or at least a SIM to play with commands. Fortunately, there's one available at a link provided in the text, and it works fine. I like his subnetting approach, I can do most of them in my head now. While reading various post on this book and kindle version saw author actually responding to some of the post. Todd even responded to a couple of my questions so I decided to get both Kindle and book. Kindle for searching. Book for actual studying. Normally I get Ciscopress by Windell Odem only. Thanks Todd for feedback what do you need to send me extra goodies mentioned in another thread. I'm going to go through Wireshark 101 and these CCENT books and possibly get Boson Netsim 9 and Exsim.I usually have a pretty short attention span with these self study guides, but I must say the author does a brilliant job at captivating the reader - and does what I find many authors of these kind of guides can't do - make it interesting. I am around three-quarters of the way through and looking forward to the rest.Thorough and very enjoyable, written in a very good tone with clear explanations. This guide explains things in a much clearer way than the official guide. I have read the book and right now I am left with 20 to complete. Then I will go for the exam. I also use Odoms book as well. But since this is Todd's day I want to say that practical, clear examples are used in his book. End of the chapter questions are excellent !! Can I forget about Labs. Oh no that's what I enjoy the most. I use packet tracer for the labs and I go along with his explanation. No Practical no pass for Cisco CCNA.It is a must!!. When you read the book it appears as if he is sitting with you, guiding you at every step of the way. After I have written this exam,I will keep you posted. Update !!- I took the exam 100-105 and passed. I am experienced Microsoft test taker, but this exam was not so difficult. This was a result of the training I got from this book. I used this book,CBT nuggets and Odoms book. I noted that using this book will make you quickly master the concepts and also you learn by doing. A word of advice though-make sure you do all the practicals either using the real equipment or packet tracer. Repeat, repeat - I found myself creating a simulated lab for testing my understanding of static routing easily, using Todd's book. Keep it up Todd. But about halfway through this book I grew a little sick of the writing style. Todd Lammle has a bad habit in this book of hopping to later subjects way too early for the reader to understand. For example, he explains the ip subnet-zero command before teaching subnetting and before even mentioning the CLI interface to configure Cisco equipment. He writes about how IPv4 Broadcasts packets, and starts writing about how IPv6 doesn't broadcast chapters in advance. Sometimes he takes the most complicated sentence structure to explain something simply. Getting into Networking is hard, and making sentences with multiple thoughts interjected while explaining a critical part of the exam is not very reader friendly. The book has enough content and is in depth enough to be a vital part of your study material, but be warned. Constantly jumping in topics and poorly structured sentences are spread throughout the book, and I've never had this much of an issue with any previous certification materials.Much more approachable than the official Cisco Press book, with a far better approach to subnetting, a traditional pain point for CCNA candidates. Lammle's conversational style works well for me, and I was able to power through a chapter a night without too big a time commitment. Like other Sybex books, this includes review questions at the end of each chapter -- not every book does this and it's a huge help. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover 100 of the exam topics -- and neither does the official book. But it does a very solid job, and I don't know of a better resource. Things I don't like about it: - Could use better editing -- there are a few mistakes here and there, and a couple of answers to review questions that don't match the question. - While I like Lammle's style, he's not the best writer. But the technical material is solid. - The practice test included with the book could stand to be improved. I'm glad it's there but if you want a higher quality practice exam you need to look at something like Boson. The software was discontinued in 2017, but I still found it on the publisher website, and it didn't require a code or login to download it. You can work through the labs with the software, although the software is buggy. Still, it really helped me understand the concepts. But you may as well buy this book used since you're not getting a CD, a code, or any extra anything with a new purchase. The author is very talented at breaking down complicated concepts into easy-to-understand material. He also uses humor, levity, images, examples, and analogies to make it easier to read. The editing is not great. A lot of content was reordered so the author refers to terms and concepts as if you know what he's talking about when he in fact hasn't introduced that concept yet. Then to understand you have to look it up in the index, and unfortunately the index is inaccurate--often you'll turn to the page referenced and find that term is not present on that page. Then you'll have to hunt around to find it. It's usually just better to use the internet and give up on the index. This entire book is inside the CCNA book, page for page. It's just two pages off because the CCNA book starts the content on page 3 instead of 1. In other words, page 26 (for example) of the CCENT book is the equivalent of page 28 in the CCNA book. So if you plan to purchase the CCNA book anyway, don't purchase this book!I started my prep by downloading all the extras the book says I need. However, what it does not tell you is you need to go to lammle's website which given this guy works in the IT field is absolutly shocking. You cant find anything on the pages, its splattered all over the place. I tried to find the practice exam but could not. The site is designed for one thing and one thing only, to get you to buy even more things. Even things like packet trace send you to other sites you need to register with. I was really getting fed up and frustrated by the end of it all. Very poor. Some Explinations are abit too in depth. With that being said its full of knowlage more than the ccent would need i would say whitch is good so youll have a solid understanding by the time your finished. Im using this alongside cris byrats videos thats just an overview. This book is most deffently needed and thats why in giving it 5 stars. Ill be getting the ccna book as soon as im finished with this one. There sems to be larger test sections too that previous books ive used. Would you like to change to the site? Restrict and shutdown modes will alert you via SNMP that a violation has occurred on a port. CORRECT: A, C. The Restrict violation mode drops packets with unknown source addresses until you remove enough secure MAC addresses to drop below the maximum value. However, it also generates a log message, causes the security violation counter to increment, and sends an SNMP trap. Shutdown is the default violation mode. The shutdown violation mode puts the interface into an error-disabled state immediately. The entire port is shut down. Also, in this mode, the system generates a log message, sends an SNMP trap, and increments the violation counter. The protect violation mode also drops packets with unknown source addresses until you remove enough secure MAC addresses to drop below the maximum value. 2-5-18 652 Errata in Text Currently reads: Register on Sybex.com to gain access to the comprehensive online interactive learning environment and test bank to help you study for your CCENT certification. In September 2016, Cisco updated this flagship certification. Luckily for test-takers, Cisco retained about 95 percent of the exam content, only removing obsolete technologies and emphasizing newer ones. You can either take the composite exam (200-125), or two separate exams (ICND1 and ICND2). Most test takers new to the career field find it more manageable to take the two-test option due to the sheer quantity of information. On the other hand, if you have significant experience in a Cisco environment, you might be okay just taking the composite. This study plan prepares you to earn your CCENT in about 10 weeks with Jeremy Cioara's videos, but it also can be used independently as a study plan. Each CBT Nuggets course is designed by our expert trainers from the certification exam objectives, so even if you're not yet a subscriber, you can use this plan to guide your studying efforts. A quick note about terminology: Our videos are called Nuggets, hence our name. If you're unfamiliar with CBT Nuggets, we offer a learning experience which includes everything you need to study for a certification exam, including in-video quizzes, virtual labs, and access to our Learner Community. This is based on the CBT Nuggets ICND1 Study Plan. Week 1: Network Fundamentals Videos 1-9. One of the key components of the CBT Nuggets Learning Experience comes with the experience element. That's why trainer Jeremy Cioara starts this course with an entire Nugget on how to build your Cisco home lab during the first week. You probably won't be using the lab this week while learning about the basics of switches, routers, cabling, and transmission speeds, but you will be soon. Even if you're not a subscriber, you can still watch how to build your own CCNA Home Lab for free on the blog. Week 2: IP Fundamentals Nuggets 10-18. IP addresses are important. So important, in fact, that you'll dedicate two full weeks to IP addresses in this 10-week study plan. Last week, you learned the components. This week, you'll learn how they connect and communicate. However, this course still retains value as a training resource. Week 4: IOS Fundamentals Nuggets 28-36. Are you ready for your deep dive into the Cisco world. If so, then get ready to learn Cisco IOS (Interconnected Operating Systems). The best way to learn the operating system will be through hands-on experience, so fire up your home lab. Before you move on to the next week, you should be able to successfully use the most common IOS commands and base configurations (without your notes). Even if it takes a couple extra days to accomplish this goal, it'll be worth it come test day. Jeremy designed this course putting topics in order of basic to complex. First, you learned the component parts of a network, how they fit together and communicate, and even practiced configuring those component parts. It's time to get your hands dirty in the virtual labs with VLANs, trunking, VTP, troubleshooting, and configuring port security. Here are a few tips to help you supercharge your training. Last week was a big week. You learned switching. This week, it's time to get into routing, which means you should keep your home lab warmed up. You'll be following along as Jeremy demonstrates static routing, routing between VLANs, L3 switching, and the wizardry of DHCP. You'll also spend about an hour this week in the world of routing protocols. Practice test. Take another CCENT practice test this week to benchmark your progress, and note the sections where you need a little extra study time. IPv4 subnetting is so important to your success in the CCENT, CCNA, and your career that we have an entire course dedicated to the topic in addition to Jeremy's five videos. We recommend using any of the free subnetting calculators and keep running through random IP addresses and masks until you can subnet them flawlessly. Just like the IOS commands, you should make it a priority to learn subnetting to perfection. In fact, you might want to skip this section until the very end, so it's fresh in your mind. You'll need it for the exam. This week, we have a smattering of security, network address translation, and the dreaded (or much hailed) IPv6. As you've probably come to expect at this point, you will be labbing it up once again with Wireshark and GNS3. After this week, you should be able to turn your router into a firewall (with access lists), configure NAT (both static and dynamic), and configure IPv6 addresses and static routing in GNS3. Week 9: Device Management Nuggets 75-78. You're on the home stretch now. Remember how in Week 4 we said you shouldn't progress until you can use the basic IOS commands and configurations. Put those skills to the test with a set of slightly more advanced Cisco functions. In fact, if you're already an experienced Cisco professional, you can probably recover a password in your sleep, which is good. Week 10: Practice, practice, practice Congratulations. You've completed all the Nuggets in this course. Now it's time to take a full-length practice exam and keep taking those practice exams until you've reached a 90 percent score. You should also take time to go back and review IPv4 subnetting and IOS commands, and keep labbing it up. The exam is very practical in nature. Week 11: Rest and Test Depending on when in the week you scheduled your test, it might be time to rest a little before the big day. It's proven that you should take the last day to get into the right headspace for the exam. If you must study, then keep it light. Good luck on the big day.
