He has formally studied English, Latin, Classical Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Biblical Greek, French, Italian and some related languages, and has taught most of these. He has related degrees from the University of Sydney and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and is currently engaged in detailed research concerning the Greek middle voice. This practical initiation to the study of this ancient language of the Christian church speaks with clarity and authority. A fruitful integration of scholarly introduction and practical application, this primer is more than a simple grammar or syntactic introduction to the language. Writing in a style designed for beginners, Kiraz avoids technical language and strives for a reader-friendly inductive approach. Readings from actual Syriac texts allow the student to experience the language first hand and the basics of the grammar of the language are ably explained. The book comes with downloadable material so that readers may listen to all reading sentences and text passages in the book.Using inscriptions, early grammars, and experiments with modern scribes, Dr. Kiraz peels back the evolution of the dot layer by layer to explain each of its uses in detail and to show how it adopted the wide range of uses it has today. In more than 600 entries it covers the Syriac heritage from its beginnings in the first centuries of the Common Era up to the present day. Special attention is given to authors, literary works, scholars, and locations that are associated with the Classical Syriac tradition. Within this tradition, the diversity of Syriac Christianity is highlighted as well as Syriac Christianity’s broader literary and historical contexts, with major entries devoted to Greek and Arabic authors and more general themes, such as Syriac Christianity’s contacts with Judaism and Islam, and with Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, and Georgian Christianities. With 13,000 entries drawn from the major existing works, it is a practical tool for all but the most specialized Classical Syriac texts. Concepts such as verb tense and voice, relative pronouns, antecedents, adjectival substantives, and the like, sound like familiar terms, but may seem foreign when it’s time to put them to practice. With chapters such as, “To Be or Not To Be, that is the Infinitive” and “Pronouns: Grammatical Stunt Doubles,” this book is both clever and engaging. This paper analyses the results of the computer skills assessments written by 4169 first-year students during orientation 2009.This paper an alyses the results of the computer skills assessments written by 416 9 first-year students during orientation 2009. We conclude that there is a definite need to provide computer training for new university students, and th at African students are most at risk of being disadvantaged by their lack of prior skills. General Terms Measurement, Performance, Human Factors. Keywords Computer skills, Computer literacy, Gender, Race 1. INTRODUCTION Although school leavers m ay have spent many hours engaging and communicating with electronic devices, they are not necessarily equipped with the computer skills that they need for tertiary study. University students use computers to access course materials, research academic topics, communicate with lecturers and peers, write assignments, perform calculations, and also complete administrative function s. To be able to cope with these demands, st udents need a general un derstanding o f computer concepts, and a range of basic computer skills. Faculty strongly suppo rted the reintroduction of com puter literacy training. Student asse ssments subsequently revealed that students were not proficient in basic computer concepts, or in the use of word processing and spreadsheets. As a result, it was recommended that basic training should be made available to all students, with variations in content depending on their major. These disparities can h ave a negative impact on academic success. These impact of these factors is likely to be exacerbated in African countries (including South Africa), where schools and homes are not as well resourced as t hose in the United States. For students to exploit ICT resources effectively, they need to be equi pped with t he required competencies; and to achieve this, universities need to determine what training interventions are required and who should receive them. Within this environment, it is important that adequate training and support is provided to ensure that previously disadvantaged students are not further disadvantaged by the use of technology in tertiary institutions. The six faculties (comm erce, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, and s cience) have varying entrance requirements for their different programs. Computer facilities at UCT ar e available to all students, who are expected to use them for communication, research, course assignments and administrative tasks. UCT faculty use an onli ne content management s ystem to deliver course material and tests, and to support stud ent collaboration on group projects. Student s are expected t o manage and update their personal information on the stude nt administration system, to use library and internet resources to conduct research, to communicate via email, and to use online trainin g m aterials to build their softw are application skills. Not all students arrive at UCT adequ ately equipped to meet these technological demands. For this r eason, online assessme nts are used to identify students who lack the computer s kills needed to cope with their first-year course requirements, so that appropriate training interventions can be provided. At the same time, the assessments provide so me insight into the level of computer skills among n ew stu dents arriving at UCT. All new first-year students write the online computer s kills test during orientation w eek, to determine their overall proficiency in the u se of PCs and to identify specific areas of w eakness. After the assessments have been completed, short training programs are provided by individual faculties to meet the initial needs of their student s. 3. METHODOLOGY During orientation 2009, all first-year UCT students were required to complete an onlin e computer skills assessment. Simulated questions respond like the actual application, allowing students multiple ways to achieve the same outcome (for example by using keyboard shortcuts, toolb ar icons, or menus). As with a real application, students can use the Undo button, retrace their steps, and try different approaches. The complexity of simulated questions can range f rom a single c lick (copy th e selected material to the clipboard ), to multi-step questions such as asking the student to save a document to a particular folder using a specific file name. This allows a realistic assessment of st udents’ abilities, since it lets them try alternative solutions to a question and backtrack or retry the question if t hey have obviously selected an incorrect option at the first attem pt.
