( November 2012 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ). Tomos acquired a production license from Puch to produce moped models under the Tomos name in 1954. Tomos had since produced various goods for the Eastern European market, including motorcycles, mopeds, outboard motors and Citroen cars for the home market. The Dutch development team was responsible for the introduction of models like the Colibri, Targa and Revival. Tomos was the last remaining moped factory in the Netherlands, surviving at least 36 others since 1966.A company to produce two-wheelers was established in Sezana in July 1954, and soon a license agreement was signed with the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Puch had economical and robust motorcycles suitable for gravel roads and steep terrain characteristic of the region, and Puch also offered favorable licensing terms and conditions, as it doubted that the factory would ever be able to operate independently. The very next month, the name TOMOS (TOvarna MOtornih koles Sezana) appeared in the company documents for the first time.In 1955 they made 137 these motorcycles and assembled 124 RL 125 scooters and one hundred mopeds. The next year, mopeds accounted for the majority (1712) of the total number of assembled units, followed by motorcycles (615) and scooters. Simultaneously with the licensed production, Tomos started development of its own serial models. The first Colibris were marked VS 50; later marks ranged from 01 to 013. Individual variants were adapted to foreign markets. In 1959, they produced more than 17,000 Colibris and signed a contract for the first major export to Sweden. Among the most successful Colibris was the type 12, while its version Colibri T 12, which was first presented in 1961 became the most popular moped in Slovenia. In order to ensure systematic and organized development, the Institute for Technical and Economic Research was established in 1962.The Netherlands emerged as an important market in 1960. Tomos had so much success, that the only other plant outside of Slovenia was built in the Netherlands in 1966. Until 2009 the factory produced for the Dutch market along with research and development of new units.Cimos also sold imported vehicles, the CX and Mehari. Therefore, they produced Automatic A1 with improved single gear engine which was built into the framework structure of the previous Automatic. Its successor, Automatic A3 was made in 1973 when they launched the new, modernized production line with automated machines for framework welding. This was the beginning of the production of new frameworks in Tomos which were visually different from the licensed Puch's motorcycle frameworks. These were attracted by automatics and mopeds of the type A-OS, A-ON and APN. The latter type was particularly popular among the young, which is why Tomos started producing special variants of these mopeds with raised handlebars, seat with back support, side bags and a lot of chrome.Colibris T-03, T-12 and T-13 had Puch 's motors while Colibri 14V had inbuilt motor produced by Tomos, according to its own design. After 1973 all motorcycles and bicycles with motors attached produced by Tomos were equipped with in-house manufactured engines. In this period, they also developed Colibri 15 with a stronger motor which could almost compete with motorcycles. In the 1980s, Tomos modernized the entire range of two-wheelers and concentrated on reducing the level of noise and harmful emissions, and increased the rider's comfort along with a more modern look. There were many European manufacturers who had mopeds in the USA market. The market hit its zenith in 1979 as gas prices were at a premium and shortages were common due to a change in OPEC policy. People started to rethink their consumption of gasoline and looked to more efficient means. The moped surfaced as that alternative reaching over 100 mpg.The first product from this new range was APN 6 which was introduced in 1981. In 1985, TOMOS launched a new generation of motorcycles, the BT 50 with cast wheels and turn signals. Based on this model, TOMOS ATX 50 C was produced later for off-road use.The later two were eventually changed to TOMOS ST and TOMOS LX. A new engine was introduced called the A35. Tomos USA was started in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in a new office and warehouse complex of over 24,000 sq ft (2,200 m 2 ).This new engine featured lighter weight rotating parts as well as better power output. This engine is currently used on all 50cc applications.New models introduced during these years such as the MC Off-Road Line, Revival, Streetmate, and Arrow. Complementing these new units was a new family engine called the A55 in 2006, meeting stricter EPA emission standards. The news caused a stir for several days in the Tomos moped community.CS1 maint: archived copy as title ( link ) By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. These centuries-old traditions offer solace and help to work through the long journey of grief. Many families choose to practice these rituals in different ways. A rabbi or funeral director can guide you in your observance of these funeral and mourning customs. The Chevra is responsible for taking care of the deceased before burial. The Chevra performs the following functions: Prayers and psalms are recited. In death as in life, the importance of preserving modesty is maintained. Men perform taharas on men and women perform taharas on women. The body is then dressed in tachrichim and often a small amount of eretz Yisroael (Israeli earth) is placed under the head. The simple garment symbolizes that all are equal in the eyes of their Creator. Many men and women are buried in their tallit (prayer shawl). When wearing a tallit, one of the tzitzit (long corner fringe) is cut off, so that is no longer fit for ritual use. This also signifies that the deceased is no longer responsible for doing the mitzvot. Sh'mirah can be translated as watching or guarding. A black k'riah ribbon is often used to symbolize the rending of clothing as the symbol of profound grief felt by the immediate family (parent, child, spouse or sibling). K'riah is usually performed at the funeral while standing to symbolize strength in the face of grief. The cut (in either the clothing or the ribbon) is made on the left side, closest to the heart when mourning the loss of a parent. The loss of a parent holds a special place in Jewish law and tradition and the responsibilities of mourning a parent are greater than any other. The tearing of the clothing or ribbon is done on the right side when mourning other immediate family relatives. Jewish law requires the body to return to earth as soon as possible. Wood expedites this process. Often holes are drilled in the bottom of the casket to hasten decomposition and the body's return to earth. This casket cannot be manufactured on Shabbat and should be blessed by a rabbi before it leaves the manufacturing facility. Many families today choose to break with this tradition and choose to consult with a rabbi or funeral director about making a casket selection. To participate in filling the grave is a mitzvah. It is considered even more of a mitzvah to assist filling in the grave because the act of kindness can never be repaid. Shiva is the Hebrew word for seven and therefore shiva is observed for seven days following the burial. The first day of shiva is the day of the burial. Shiva ends after morning prayers (shacharit) are recited on the seventh day. Shiva is usually observed in the home of the deceased or a close relative. Upon returning from the cemetery, mourners traditionally eat a meal of condolence. This includes eggs, symbolizing life and fertility, and bread, symbolizing life and sustenance. This meal and others are usually provided by friends performing a mitzvah, thereby freeing up the family from their usual responsibilities. Tradition also dictates that mourners sit on benches or sit on chairs lower than those of the visitors. A mourner does not rise to greet the visitor. The visitors are expected to console the mourner and to let the mourner speak first. In some homes, these traditions are not followed or are followed symbolically. Shabbat is counted as one of the days of shiva, however the rituals of shiva are not observed on Shabbat. The torn garment or ribbon is not typically worn on Shabbat. Those who attend synagogue will leave the house to attend prayers on Shabbat during shiva. Resumption of mourning practices resumes at nightfall Saturday when Shabbat ends. The timing of shivah when there is a holiday may vary. Shiva may end the night before (erev) the holiday begins and it would be as if the full seven days of shiva had been observed. It is best to consult a rabbi if a burial occurs near a holiday. This symbolizes that they are ready to resume daily life. This is the end of the first stage of mourning. This is the end of the mourning period for anyone but one's parents. Children are obligated to mourn their parents for eleven months. Sh'loshim is less restrictive than shiva. While mourners do not attend social gatherings, they may now say Kaddish daily in a synagogue instead of having a minion at home. A yarhzeit candle is lit at sunset the night before the yarhzeit date and kept lit throughout the following day until it burns out. Kaddish is recited in synagogue during services. It is said on Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzereth, Pesach and Shavuoth. It is not said during the first year of mourning. If, however, the mourner feels that he or she could not restrain himself or herself from loud and uncontrolled expressions of grief, such as would disturb the other congregants, it is acceptable to leave the synagogue during the first year. It is customary for the unveiling to take place 12 months after the funeral as a way to mark the end of the formal mourning period. However, the unveiling may take place any time after sh'loshim. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut.In Jewish tradition, this is a brief time, but an essential rite of passage characterized by respect and tender care for the dead, as well as recognition of a mourner’s dazed state. Blessed is the True Judge. In Jewish tradition, these are the first words uttered upon receiving tragic news of any kind, including a death. It’s a way of saying, “I have no words for this.” The blessing also acknowledges that death is beyond our understanding, especially unexpected death. It’s a way of saying, “I don’t understand how this could have happened.” A Velveteen Rabbi blog post teaches that one answer to this question can be found in the very letters of the blessing. What is true of every life. Every journey has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Our three-part guide to becoming a parent offers Jewish wisdom and ritual for grieving a loss in that context. Maybe you’ve lost a sibling who was a rival. Maybe your loved one overdosed or was estranged or was sick for a long time and you now feel relief. You may have lost your spouse, and, amidst your own grieving process, you’re also arranging a funeral and reordering finances, in addition to supporting your children emotionally. Maybe your loss isn’t related to the death of a person; retirement, grieving a national tragedy, getting divorced, empty nesting, and breaking up with a close friend may all be tragic shifts for you. A more contemporary Jewish interpretation recognizes the depression or other serious mental illnesses that may prompt suicide and considers a person who dies by suicide to have died of causes beyond their control. The Talmud also recognizes that many elements of Jewish mourning ritual exist as much for the living survivors as for the dead, so these rituals may be practiced even in the case of a suicide. Make it the first entry in a journal full of letters to them. Moving forward you can write to them on important dates or whenever the mood strikes In the Book of Proverbs, it says, “The soul of man is the candle of God.” When a person dies, a candle is placed near their head to symbolize the spark of the divine that is within each of us. Put beautifully by Mourning and Mitzvah, a “dead body is like a damaged Torah scroll, no longer fit for use but still deserving reverence for the holy purpose it once served.” Serving as a member of a chevra kaddisha is one of the greatest mitzvot, because it is one that goes without recognition and which can never be repaid. They wrap the body in a simple white burial shroud, whether rich or poor. Some people are also wrapped in a prayer shawl, or it may line the casket; one of the fringes of the tallit is cut off to demonstrate that it will no longer be used for prayer and that the deceased is no longer obligated to do mitzvot. The body may also be belted with a sash knotted in the shape of the Hebrew letter shin, which represents one of God’s names, Shaddai. As the chevra kaddisha passes time before the burial, they recite soothing psalms. In Jewish tradition, the casket remains closed during the funeral and burial, and there is no viewing. While an open casket may provide closure or be healing, the tradition comes up against a few Jewish values. There is also the Jewish belief that we are each created in the image of the Divine, so we should preserve the natural state of the deceased for burial. Finally, it is Jewish tradition to remember the deceased in the most vibrant moments of their life. The Kabbalah tell us that the soul slowly leaves the body as it decomposes; cremation would interrupt that process and even, perhaps, cause pain to the deceased. The only exception for this is if the donation will save someone’s life.
