It started about 15 hours ago so it appears to be a major event. Even through I'm on the correct plan now, I don't have a 4g signal until they resolve the issue. 3. It all started with receiving the device I was going thru the normal process of setting it up and it would not activate online so I called Sprint so they could activate it and they turned it into rocket science so they transfused me to tech support and the tech person sent me to another tech person my first call is was on the phone about 20 or so min so three transfers in they went for a 4th time and mid way thru hung up on me I know it was not me I was using a lan line. So I called them again and here we go again 3 transfers and I chewed them out and said just activate the stupid thing and at this point between the two calls I have been on the phone for about 40min or so and I told them if you transfer me one more time that's it and they said well nothing we can do but send you to tech support oh my god seriously. So I took a deep breath and said ok but told them here are two numbers of mine if this happens again so they can call me back and guess what 5 or so min talking to the tech person they didn't even know what device I had. And sure enough they need to send me to yet another person and that was the point I said forget it that's how you treat customers really. ZimFromIrk 1.0 out of 5 stars Before I get to the device itself, I have to comment on Sprint's customer service -- horrible. I dumped Sprint five years ago, partially because I grew so tired of waiting in line forever at their stores. There, enough said about that. Others have written excellent reviews of this hotspot, and I won't repeat all those details. I bought this device three months ago because I knew I'd be away from home for an extended period and needed internet connectivity. I settled on Clear wireless because they have coverage in the cities I would be in, but they wouldn't sell me a hotspot because my house is at the edge of their coverage area at home. So instead, I went to Sprint, which basically resells Clear's 4G WIMAX service and was willing to let me buy this. Big mistake. The device worked well during the initial 30 days, when I tested it in the locations where I'd be spending time. I'm an occasional user, and use this when I'm away from home or my apartment (both have wireless N). In January, I had occasion to use this hotspot for a few days in a row while working away from home. But it got 4G service, was fast and I didn't think much of it. Towards the end of that period, it fell back to 3G mode a lot, but I didn't care that much because of the kind of work I was doing. This week (early February), I once again need it. I figured the network was temporarily down and I used 3G for a while, and thought that was even slower than usual. I'd try to go to 4G mode once in a while, but telling it to do so with the web interface more often than not caused it to power down. Finally, I poked the reset button by the battery for 10 seconds, and lo and behold, after rebooting, it connected and I was in 4G heaven for about 20 minutes. So I called Sprint -- their phone number is really hard to find on their website. Their tech had me basically reboot the device, as I just did and lo and behold it worked again. He opened a ticket with their stores and told me to go to the Sprint store if I had more trouble. We hung up and 20 minutes later, it was back to the old behavior. So I packed up and headed for the store, thinking they would test the device and swap it. I need the hotspot to work, so I told them that was a non-starter and they agreed that they'd have it tested in an hour if I'd come back. Since that's only three months of service and I have 21 months left on the contract, I figured I'd do it and send a letter to Sprint corporate pointing out that they wasted three hours of my time, not to mention that they are selling a product that doesn't work (see the other reviews). Then he told me that since it's under warranty, Sierra would replace it for free but I'd still have to send it off. That was the last straw. I took the device and left -- I'll suffer through 3G mode until I can find a replacement. But I'm done with Sprint and this wireless, egg-cooking, overheating hotspot. With the U727 connected directly to my computer, I could get a connection up and running in 5-10 seconds: start the app, click connect, and I'm online. Great for when you need something fast. With the cradlepoint I had an extra device, but it wasn't much longer. The Overdrive seems to take 30-60 seconds to become usable, and sometimes I have to reconnect once or twice to get completely online. Not good. Second, the battery charging mechanism is just ridiculous. Based on a true story: I'm traveling somewhere, but it's been a week since I used the adapter. I turn it on, only to discover that it has just 26 battery left. Then I grit my teeth as I watch it waste precious battery life just booting itself up. I can't help wondering: is it making me a cup of tea or something. I finally get online, and do what I need to do. Oops, I guess I used it too long. The battery is flat. Fine, I'll plug it in - not cool, but at least there's an outlet not far away. What's it doing now. Oh, it won't turn on until it hits 10. And it takes like half an hour to go from 5 to 10.Please try again later. Sprint is the one that sold this unit to us and they are putting their name on it and yet they will not take care of the problems that many customers are having. The battery overheating and bubbling is a common known issue and so far as I can tell they have no plans to address this issue or make it right with existing customers. When our 2 year contract is up we will definitely be shopping around with Sprint's competitors. Buyer beware that this unit is a very poor design and Sprint will not support any hardware issues that you have with it. Getting broadband used to mean snaking Ethernet cables through your house. Now you don't even need to be at home. Sprint's Overdrive delivers wireless internet with speed that's comparable to what you'd get from a cable modem, provided you're in the right city. Most U.S. carriers offer reasonably fast 3G wireless data, which tops out at about one megabit per second. Sprint is the first American carrier to start rolling out a faster 4G connection, available so far in 29 cities including Austin, Texas, where we put it through its paces during the SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Festival. Like the Verizon MiFi, which we reviewed last year, the Sprint Overdrive takes a wireless data connection and uses it to establish a local Wi-Fi hotspot you can connect your devices to. The Overdrive behaves pretty much like a regular Wi-Fi router, with all the standard options (including security), except that you can unplug and carry it out the door and it still works just as well as it did at home. It only supports up to five devices at a time, which is enough for your laptop, cellphone, iPad, portable gaming device and digital camera. In our tests of a new unit at the default settings, we squeezed just shy of three hours of battery life out of the device while engaged in typical internet usage (browsing, e-mailing, uploading a video file, streaming music). Crucially, that's just enough for a morning telecommuting session from a park or coffee shop, although we wish an optional battery pack were available to keep us online longer before we had to retreat to a power outlet. So, just how fast is Sprint's 4G network. On a Wi-Fi-connected Motorola Droid, we averaged 1.53 Mbps downstream. On a laptop, our connection speed using the Overdrive was 3.16 Mbps downstream and 0.59 Mbps upstream. Given that the average American broadband speed was 3.9 Mbps in Q3 of 2009, according to Akamai's most recent report, the Overdrive lives up to its promise of delivering mobile broadband. If you're willing to take a leap on voice over Internet Protocol, the Overdrive offers a plausible cellphone alternative, assuming you can deal with its short battery life. It's small enough that you could leave it in your bag or pocket, then use Skype on an iPod Touch for your phone service. Even adding Skype credit at 2.1 cents a minute, the Overdrive-iPod plan is probably cheaper overall, with much faster data connectivity and support for multiple devices. Extras include a microSD slot for adding up to 16 GB of shared network storage; an option to reduce Wi-Fi range to conserve power; a well-designed, browser-based dashboard; and GPS integrated with Google Maps, Mapquest, Microsoft Bing or Yahoo.
