Thanks Axel, I've been to the Knob already to get started. Three head closed loop dual capstan, two motors and about twenty or twenty-five pounds. Other than dust, the cosmetics are very good, all lights work, all buttons and slides are present and move as they are supposed to and the rosewood-vinyled wood base is flawless. All functions appear to work except the right drive cog which does not turn when play is pressed but works for fast forward, and the capstans which always spin if the power is on. I haven't opened it up yet, but I'm hoping it's just a belt issue. Because of this problem, I'm not yet able to listen to it and make sure meters and record function work. I'm fairly clear on all the features but one. Would someone be so kind as to explain how to use this to me. As well, I'm unclear on what closed loop refers to. I'd also appreciate any comments about the unit's strengths and shortcomings. Once again, the help I receive here is very much appreciated. Edit: After poking around at the levers in the tape well, everything functions as it should. Sounds good on headphones, meters are very fast. I'll hook it into the sytem tonight for a real test.I think this is a design issue rather than a defect. It is certainly the best deck I have used and really showed up the poor quality of most of the tapes I've recorded over the years. One or two that I got right on my most recent Pioneer machine were exceptional. The bias calibration turned out to be fairly simple, just a matter of setting a blank tape to record, playing the test tone and adjusting the L and R calibration screws to move the VU meter pointers to the calibration mark. I opened it up and it was very clean, all belts appear to be in fine shape and might even be replacements as they all fit well and are flexible. I was impressed by the comparison of the internals to all the other decks I've been inside. It is packed full of discrete electronics with only sufficent empty space to permit cooling. It's no wonder it comes in at 23 lbs. I'm waiting on word from SONY DAPC about manual availability which may help some. Do you know if that was something that was added for later versions of the model or perhaps removed from early versions. I've also seen an ad copyrighted in 1974 which made no mention of having adjustment capability but didn't mention bias calibration either.That was near the top in cassette decks. Enjoy your machine. RonHere is another one, not quite in as good shape as mine::MEWA:IT Some of the later TEAC and other makes of Reel To Reel machines adopted closed loop. It's a very nice idea. RonI'm liking this more and more as I play with it but have found there is a real difference in how different brands and types of tape record on it even when the bias is adjusted. I'd never noticed the difference on previous decks I've used. Maxell is what is available around here, but I've picked up a variety of types as I found them and I'm liking the Sony UX best so far followed by Sony CDit and TDK SA. Mostly the difference is related to high frequencies, but some are just plain muddy. Same with pre-recorded. Some are good, even some older Type 1 and others are not worth listening to. I've been recording from CD so far, but I'll repeat the experiment with vinyl once I have made room in the cabinet and can get the deck off the top of the TT.Don't know about the Sony but the belts are easy to replace on these machines. I used Al DiMeola's Elegant Gypsy, first side and recorded on the eight tape types I could find with bias calibrated for each tape. Only the Maxell XLII was new, the others were used in various condition, the Sony's being the worst shape. I'm guessing that the azimuth adjustment was added for the models with serial numbers covered by the service manual. Have you received yours yet, and if so, how do you like it. I'm especially curious about your experience with high frequency drop-off when recording. I've noticed some, but I also discovered that a tape recorded on another deck with HX-Pro plays back on the Sony with better high frequency reproduction. That indicates to me that the Sony is capable of better high frequency response than I'm getting when I record with it and that perhaps there is something out of adjustment in the record head. It's headed for the shop for service as soon as a delivery of some UX tapes arrives this week though I am debating having it set up for CDiT tape as I can find those more easily. I'd hoped for the manual to give my tech a leg up on the head adjustments, but I think I'll just let him have at it and see how he does.In recognition of their error they are going to send me the other version of the manual for free. I might be able to post a copy of the azimuth adjustment page if you want. Will be interested to see if the other manual can shed some light on that Azimuth thing. The service manuals are amazing - I ordered one for my TC-138SD several weeks ago which was also an original copy. Would appreciate your opinion on the best tape to use - Sony UX90 ??, and where I can locate the belts.I'm going to have a closer look at the heads based on that info and see if I can make any sense of it myself, and also to see if I can determine whether I have a Canadian or US model. I have done some experimenting with tape types on the machine (love that third head) and liked the UX best. Unfortunately, they seem very hard to find. I did manage to win an auction for 25 used 90 minute UX tapes but other than that, no luck even at The Sony Store as their outlet here is known. Denon HD8 was very close but are just as scarce. Maxell, which are available in every store in town that sells tape, sound really poor even though I know they are not a low grade tape. Once the heads are set up the story may change. I'd be very interested in hearing your impressions once your deck arrives and you've had a chance to listen to it.
