On August 1, 1909, the future giant’s Rapid F-406 B was the first truck to climb Pike’s Peak in Colorado. No matter if it’s today’s best-selling trimmed out cash cow or the “the Jimmy” of yore. And, they come by it in the most honest of ways. The delivery drivers made the trek from Seattle to New York in five days. The amphibious DUKW353 swam and drove across more than a few continents during WWll. Complete with bilge pumps, rudder, and outboard engine, GMC made them for the U.S. and allies. GMC won awards from the military for this design perfection. And, they are still around today! And, GMC gave America a dandy. The first on the market was the TVS-4, or travel vehicle streamlined. The team was also behind GMC’s history of its bus makes. And, the interior was replete with avocado green shag carpet. Though they were in production for a short time, they hold a great place in our hearts. His fond memory of touring days is the reasoning. GMC even came out with the “Sprint” in the 70’s which is quite like Chevy’s then-popular El Camino. GMC began diverging from their competitor’s designs in the 90’s. Today, their trendy designs like the Yukon and Denali series makes converts. Each year it seems, the celebrity GMC SUV has another milestone in sales. The serious team took on the addition of a turbocharged V6 with a higher torque than the Corvette. And, the cool-as-hell van the mercenaries drove as a base camp. And, the heavy duty machine took enough turns, dives, and gunshots to make it the true hero of the series. So much so that when the reboot A-Team movie came out in 2010, the van got a contract, too. For example, the first electric car began a short drive before the Model T was gracing roadways. But, they did not gain enough interest for good reason. Bicycles of the era were faster. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to. Power Lumbar If the seats have power lumbar, the controls used to operate this feature are located on the outboard side of the seats. Release the control when the lower seatback reaches the desired level of lumbar support. The controls for this feature are located on the driver’s door panel, and are used to program and recall memory settings for the driver’s seat, outside mirrors, and the adjustable throttle and brake pedal. See “MEMORY SEAT RECALL” under DIC Vehicle Customization (With DIC Buttons) on page 3-72 for more information. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts cannot do their job when you are reclined like this. The shoulder belt cannot do its job. In a crash, you could go into it, receiving neck or other injuries. To lower the head restraint, press the release button (A), located on the top of the seatback, while you push the head restraint down. The front seats may have head restraints that also tilt forward and rearward. Press the button to cycle through the temperature settings of high, medium, and low, and to turn it off. Indicator bars next to the symbol will designate the level of heat selected: three for high, two for medium, and one for low. Be sure to return the seat to the passenger seating position. Folding and Tumbling the Seat(s) CAUTION: Automatically folding and tumbling the seat when someone is sitting in the seat, could cause injury to the person sitting there. Always make sure there is no one sitting in the seat before pressing the automatic seat release button. Be sure to return the seat to the passenger seating position. Notice: Folding a rear seat with the safety belts still fastened may cause damage to the seat or the safety belts. There will be a slight delay between the folding of the seatback and the tumbling of the seat. CAUTION: If the seatback is not locked, it could move forward in a sudden stop or crash. CAUTION: If the seatback is not locked, it could move forward in a sudden stop or crash. That could cause injury to the person sitting there. Always push and pull on the seatback to be sure it is locked. People in the vehicle could be injured. Be sure to lock the seat into place properly when installing it. 4. Push and pull on the seat to make sure it is locked into place. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts. CAUTION: Do not let anyone ride where he or she cannot wear a safety belt properly. Put someone on it. Take the simplest vehicle. Suppose it is just a seat on wheels. 1-31. The rider does not stop. 1-32 The person keeps going until stopped by something. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield. With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That is why safety belts make such good sense. 1-33. You could be — whether you are wearing a safety belt or not. But your chance of being conscious during and after an accident, so you can unbuckle and get out, is much greater if you are belted. Be aware that there are special things to know about safety belts and children. And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a child will be riding in your vehicle, see Older Children on page 1-51 or Infants and Young Children on page 1-54. The shoulder belt is too loose. It will not give as much protection this way. 1-36 CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. The lap belt is too loose. It will not give nearly as much protection this way. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your lap belt is too loose. In a crash, you could slide under the lap belt and apply force on your abdomen. The belt is buckled in the wrong place. 1-38 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not on the pelvic bones. The belt is over an armrest. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt goes over an armrest like this. The belt would be much too high. In a crash, you can slide under the belt. The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-40 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. The belt is behind the body. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by not wearing the lap-shoulder belt properly. In a crash, you would not be restrained by the shoulder belt. Your body could move too far forward increasing the chance of head and neck injury. The belt is twisted across the body. 1-42 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces.See Lap Belt on page 1-49 for more information. Here is how to wear a lap-shoulder belt properly. 1. Improper shoulder belt height adjustment could reduce the effectiveness of the safety belt in a crash. See “Shoulder Belt Height Adjustment” later in this section. Adjust the height so that the shoulder portion of the belt is centered on your shoulder. The belt should be away from your face and neck, but not falling off your shoulder. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide positions the belt away from the neck and head. The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top. The person wearing the belt could be seriously injured. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they do not wear safety belts. A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible, below the rounding, throughout the pregnancy. If the belt is not long enough, see Safety Belt Extender on page 1-50. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if necessary. The manufacturer’s instructions that come with the booster seat, state the weight and height limitations for that booster. An older child should wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide. The shoulder belt should not cross the face or neck. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. In a crash, the child would not be restrained by the shoulder belt. The child might slide under the lap belt. The belt force would then be applied right on the abdomen. This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle. Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them. Add-on child restraints, which are purchased by the vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height, and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should. A booster seat can also help a child to see out the window. 1-58 Securing an Add-On Child Restraint in the Vehicle CAUTION: A child can be seriously injured or killed in a crash if the child restraint is not properly. The child restraint instructions are important, so if they are not available, obtain a replacement copy from the manufacturer. We recommend that children and child restraints be secured in a rear seat, including: an infant or a child riding in a rear-facing child restraint;. Never secure a child restraint in the center front seat. It is always better to secure a child restraint in a rear seat. There are two lower anchors for each LATCH seating position that will accommodate a child restraint with lower attachments (B). 1-62 Top Tether Anchor A top tether (A, C) anchors the top of the child restraint to the vehicle. Others require the top tether always to be attached. In Canada, the law requires that forward-facing child restraints have a top tether, and that the tether be attached. Third Row — Three Passenger For models with a three passenger third row seat, see the information following for installing a child restraint with a top tether in the third row, if your vehicle has one. Never install two top tethers using the same top tether anchor. Be sure to use an anchor located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed. Secure any unused safety belts behind the child restraint so children cannot reach them. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out of the retractor to set the lock, if your vehicle has one, after the child restraint has been installed. Refer to the child restraint instructions and the following steps: 2.1. Find the top tether anchor. 2.2. A rear seat is a safer place to secure a forward-facing child restraint. See Where to Put the Restraint on page 1-60. In addition, your vehicle has a passenger sensing system which is designed to turn off the right front passenger’s frontal airbag under certain conditions. If you secure a child restraint using a safety belt and it uses a top tether, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) on page 1-61 for top tether anchor locations. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if necessary. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them. Young children and infants need the protection that a child restraint system can provide. Driver Side shown, Passenger Side similar If your vehicle has roof-rail airbags for the driver, right front passenger, and second row outboard passengers, they are in the ceiling above the side windows. 1-79. Dual-stage airbags adjust the restraint according to crash severity. Your vehicle has electronic frontal sensors, which help the sensing system distinguish between a moderate frontal impact and a more severe frontal impact. Some components of the airbag module may be hot for several minutes. Everyone in your vehicle who has outgrown child restraints should wear a safety belt properly —. This may unintentionally cause the passenger sensing system to turn the airbag(s) off for some adult size occupants. If this happens, just let the belt go back all the way and start again. There are parts of the airbag system in several places around your vehicle. To purchase a service manual, see Service Publications Ordering Information on page 7-15. The passenger sensing system may not operate properly if the original seat trim is replaced with non-GM covers, upholstery or trim, or with GM covers, upholstery or trim designed for a different vehicle. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash. To help make sure your restraint systems are working properly after a crash, have them inspected and any necessary replacements made as soon as possible. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The windows will function with the keys in the ignition and they could be seriously injured or killed if caught in the path of a closing. Store this information in a safe place, not in your vehicle. Notice: If you ever lock your keys in your vehicle, you may have to damage the vehicle to get in. If your vehicle has the remote start feature you can also start your vehicle with the RKE transmitter. If enabled through the DIC, the horn will chirp when the lock button is pressed again within three seconds of the previous press of the lock button. All transmitters need to be re-coded to match the new transmitter. The lost transmitter will no longer work after the new transmitters are re-coded. This feature allows you to start the engine from outside of the vehicle. It may also start up the vehicle’s heating or air conditioning systems and rear window defogger. To start the vehicle using the remote start feature: 1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle. 2. Press and release the transmitter’s lock button. The vehicle’s doors will lock. Also, the engine will turn off during a remote vehicle start if the coolant temperature gets too high or if the oil pressure gets low. From the outside, use the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter or the key in the driver’s door. From the inside, use the power door locks or manual door locks. To lock or unlock the door with the manual locks, push down or pull up on the manual lock knob. These prevent passengers from opening the rear doors from the inside. The rear door security locks are located on the inside edge of each rear door. Security Lock Label shown The rear doors must be open to access them. It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the liftglass or liftgate open, or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the liftglass or liftgate:. The liftglass can also be opened by pressing the liftglass release button on the RKE. 2-14 To open the entire liftgate, press the touchpad on the underside of the liftgate handle (B). You cannot see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the liftgate open, or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the liftgate:. CAUTION: You or others could be injured if caught in the path of the power liftgate. Make sure there is no one in the way of the liftgate as it is opening and closing. If this occurs, the liftgate can still be operated manually. If you shift the transmission out of PARK (P) while the power function is in progress, the liftgate power function will continue to completion. With the power liftgate disabled and all of the doors unlocked, the liftgate can be manually opened and closed. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather. They can be overcome from extreme heat in warm or hot weather and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons, children or others could be badly injured or even killed. Press down fully on the window switch, then release, to activate the express-down mode. The express-down mode can be canceled at any time by pulling up on the front edge of the switch. Although your vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it impossible to steal. Content Theft-Deterrent Your vehicle may have a content theft-deterrent alarm system. It activates only if you use the power door lock switch with the door open or the RKE transmitter. You should also remember that you can start your vehicle with the correct ignition key if the alarm has been set off. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. At this time, you may also want to check the fuse, see Fuses and Circuit Breakers on page 5-117. If the engine still does not start with the other key, your vehicle needs service. If none of this works, then your vehicle needs service.Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N).If you add electrical parts or accessories, you could change the way the engine operates. If you do not, your engine might not perform properly. Plug in the coolant heater at least four hours before starting your vehicle. This system allows the engine to operate on either all or half of its cylinders, depending on the driving conditions. When less power is required, such as cruising at a constant vehicle speed, the system will operate in the half cylinder mode, allowing your vehicle to achieve better fuel economy. PARK (P): This position locks your rear wheels. It is the best position to use when you start the engine because your vehicle cannot move easily. When parked on a hill, especially when the vehicle has a heavy load, you might notice an increase in the effort to shift out of Park. So, be sure the transfer case is in a drive gear, Two-Wheel Drive High or Four-Wheel Drive High or Four-Wheel Drive Low —. It provides the best fuel economy for your vehicle.
