Surprisingly a lot of very basic first aid you have to pick up on your own.Has enabled me to function above some of my colleagues when it comes to minor injuries.I've deducted one star though.However for a medical professional like myself it was more than adequate.You start doing some DIY, your son starts being more active and daring the house and garden and you realise that you need a reference guide for use in emergencies as well as life's little accidents. I did a fair bit of research reading reviews and checking prices before buying this particular book and now that we have received it and used it I am really happy that I made the right choice. It's a very hand-sized (287 pages inc.Size-wise it is ideal as it is small enough to take on holiday for example but not so small that you'd get eyestrain trying to read it. The book has a logical contents section at the front with general first aid info.The truth is there's no right way to organise such information as what works for one may seem illogical for another, but it has been easy to use for us. At the back there's an alphabetical index which is probably what you will go to first when faced with a first aid situation and you are in a hurry. Our first use of the book was to deal with a childhood nose bleed, which is one of those conditions that no matter how many times I am told or read what the right thing is to do I still forget and need to remind myself, so I was pleased that the info.It is also one of those common problems that you get conflicting information on. This leads me to why, in essence, we specifically bought this book. Some may say just look on your phone, tablet or computer for first aid answers. The problem is there will be times e.g. when out on a walk away from a good signal when that isn't possible. You will also find different information from different sources and be left wondering what to do for the best. This book, however, has been endorsed by and is an actual authorised manual of the St John Ambulance (and St Andrew's First Aid and British Red Cross). That's good enough for me. DK books always have good picture content and for me are up there with Usborne as stand-out UK publishers in that regard. Being squeamish,I cringe at some of the pictures and photos but it is better that they are accurate and these are. Length-wise I think DK got this book just right and I am sure that St Johns and the others were instrumental in what ultimately was included and what got excluded. For those with the time and interest there's extra information clearly geared up for those who might be doing first aid on a more regular basis (e.g. St Johns) and while that's not me, I think it is good that the info.Hopefully you won't have to use it and if you do then for nothing serious, but if you do it will be there just in case which should provide reassurance. It is clearly written and comprehensive with plenty of diagrams and photos. I have a print copy but also wanted an ebook copy, and this review is for anybody considering the ebook format. However it really needs full page colour, and won't download at all on either of my kindles (a popup says that the format is incompatible with the device). It does download to the kindle app on my Android phone, and is just about readable but really needs a bigger screen. I expect it would be fine in the kindle app for a PC.The book is well laid out and easy to find the information you need. I’d recommend a read through of common household issues so you have a rough idea what to do in the event something happens and then use this as reference once any immediate issues are out of the way.Clearly laid out, and well illustrated, this book will tell you everything you need to know about First Aid, from applying a sticking plaster to CPR. It is best studied in conjunction with an approved First Aid course, as First Aid is above all a practical skill. In these circumstances, informed improvisation becomes critical. It is not intended for medical professionals and intentionally avoids medical jargon for this reason, but some medical professionals find this disturbing. As far as “incorrect medical information”, bear in mind that the book was carefully vetted by the physicians of the St. John Ambulance Medical Board. If you only read one wilderness first aid book, this is the one to read. Published in 1994, the Wilderness First Aid Guide was developed under a grant from the Donner Foundation to create first aid training that would be relevant to remote Northern First Nation and Inuit communities where help is often days away. It remains one of the best Wilderness First Aid publications available today. It's divided into 4 sections: first response, caring for casualties, wilderness injuries, and wilderness illnesses. There are sections at the end on: improvising first aid supplies, first aid kits, medications, signaling for help, and first aid checklists for documenting a rescue. Wayne differentiates between the first aid needed if help is an hour away and first aid if help is days away. Most other wilderness first aid books focus on the help needed in the first hour, but are sketchy beyond that. The chapter on moving a casualty to shelter details over 14 short distance lifting techniques for 1, 2 or multiple rescuers. The chapter on moving a casualty to help details techniques for stretcher building, carrying, and belaying, and reviews the pros, cons and special considerations of various land (ATV, snowmobile, komatik, dogsled), water (canoe, cabin cruiser) and air (airplane, helicopter) evacuations. There are also comprehensive chapters on second aid (taking care of someone while you wait for help), keeping warm, bear attacks, and abdominal complaints. These are crucial wilderness first aid skills that other manuals cover in a page or two, if they talk about them at all. Currently, this book is used as a text for the four day wilderness first aid courses offered by St. John Ambulance in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. It has been translated into German, and in Germany you must have a Wilderness First Aid Certificate in order to purchase a Personal Locator Beacon rescue device. I recommend this book highly to anyone who spends time in the outdoors.Most of the First Aid guides I’ve read that are published in Britain concern themselves with what Mr. Merry refers to as “town First Aid.” OK, so Britain is not exactly known for its wilderness in the same way as, say, Canada or Alaska, but there are those of us who may plan to visit such areas, or to spend time in the mountains in Wales, Dartmoor or Exmoor, or the Scottish Highlands, and for whom a specific wilderness first aid manual would be a sensible purchase. This volume would be such a sensible purchase. The book is both informative and comprehensive, and is written in accessible language that does not presume existing medical training on the reader’s part. Sensible advice is provided for a wide range of injuries and maladies for those in situations where professional medical assistance may take hours or even days to arrive, rather than being a short ambulance ride away. Also covered are topics relating to evacuating casualties safely, and how to summon assistance in the middle of nowhere, including what to do when that assistance is already searching for you. I’d advise anyone who plans spending time in the wilds to consider this book; it’s ideal for the wild camping and bushcraft fraternity. Granted, one or two of the injuries and treatments detailed are not going to be of great use in Britain (due to our tightly-controlled gun ownership laws and lack of Grizzly Bears), but for the most part, the injuries described in the book’s 390 pages are those that could befall any of us spending time off the beaten track.In great condition.
