Igneous (Rocks) Rocks formed by cooling and crystallization of molten material within, or on the surface of the Earth. Magma Intrusive molten material trapped underground and contains complex solution of silicates plus water vapor and other gases Lava Extrusive molten material that appears on Earth's surface. Intrusive The solidification of magma within the crust or mantle. Extrusive The solidification of magma that forms at or on the surface of the Earth. Bowen's (Reaction Series) An orderly sequence in which various minerals crystallize and their formation into igneous rocks. Continuous (Reaction Series) The side of Bowen's Reaction Series that contains the plagioclase minerals. As the first crystal forms, each plagioclase will continue to react with the remaining liquid as cooling continues. Discontinuous (Reaction Series) The side of Bowen's Reaction Series that contains common ferromagnesian minerals. As the first crystal forms, each mineral reacts with the remaining liquid and forms a new mineral at the expense of the old mineral. Mafic A rock type that suggests a high magnesium and iron content while being low in silica. This causes the rock to be darker in color. Felsic A rock type that suggests a high silica content while being low in iron and magnesium. This causes the rock to be lighter in color.http://www.alfavs.eu/userfiles/file/dell-e176fpb-manual.xml Fractional Crystalization The removal of crystals from the liquid magma by settling, floating, or filtering. This is one of the processes by which the original composition of a rock is changed. Assimilation The process in which a magma melts country rock and integrates the newly molten material. This is one of the the processes by which the original composition of a rock is changed. Mixing Whereby two different magmas of differing composition come together to create a specific material. Country Rock A rock mass that has been intruded by a magma. Xenoliths (Inclusions) A fragment of country rock surrounded by igneous rock. Pluton An igneous rock mass.Batholith A large mass of intrusive igneous rock that crops out over an area of more than 100 square kilometers. Stock An irregular body of intrusive igneous rock that cuts across the layering of the intruded rock. Dike A tabular igneous rock whose contacts cut across the trend of the country rock. Sill A tabular igneous rock that lies parallel to the layering of the country rock. Laccolith A lenticular pluton, intruded parallel to the layering of the intruded rock, above which the layers of intruded rock have bent upward to form a dome. Discordant (Igneous Pluton) Describes the contacts of batholiths, stocks, and dikes, which all cut across the trend of the country rock. Concordant (Igneous Pluton) Describes the contacts of sills and laccoliths, which all form parallel to the trends of the country rock. Texture The appearance of a rock, results from size, shape, and the arrangement of crystals or grains. Phaneritic The texture of an igneous rock composed of macroscopic materials. Aphanitic The texture of an igneous rock composed of microscopic grains. Porphyritic The texture of an igneous rock in which fine-grains are embedded in a large coarse grained matrix. Pegmatitic A very coarse-grained igneous rock of any composition, most frequently found as granitic.http://afreecountry.com/?q=node/4508 Glassy The texture of an igneous rock that reflects an extremely rapid cooling history. Gabbro A coarse -grained igneous rock of mafic composition. (Composed predominantly of ferromagnetic materials and with lesser amounts of calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar.) Granite A coarse -grained intrusive igneous rock of felsic composition. (Contains quartz and is composed mostly of potassium- and sodium-rich feldspars.) Obsidian A usually black or banded, hard volcanic glass that displays shiny, curved surfaces when fractured and is formed by rapid cooling of lava. Pegmatite An extremely coarse -grained igneous rock. Caused when material is cooled very slow, and is typically felsic. Commonly associated with the margins of plutons. Peridotite A rock of ultramafic composition; composed of pyroxene and olivine. Pumice A frothy volcanic glass; this type of igneous rock contains air bubbles. Rhyolite A fine -grained extrusive igneous rock of felsic composition. (Contains quartz and is composed mostly of feldspars.) Diorite A coarse -grained igneous rock of intermediate composition. (Half of the rock is made up of plagioclase feldspar and the other half being ferromagnetic.) Andesite A fine -grained extrusive igneous rock of intermediate composition. (Half of the rock is made up of plagioclase feldspar and the other half being ferromagnetic.) Basalt A fine -grained extrusive igneous rock of mafic composition. (Composed predominantly of ferromagnetic materials and with lesser amounts of calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar.) Vesicular A texture of an igneous rock characterized by the presence of vesicles. Vesicle A small cavity in an igneous rock that was formerly occupied by a bubble of escaping gas. Pyroclasts Accumulation of material ejected from explosive-type volcanoes. Phenocrysts The coarse-grained matrix of an igneous rock. Ground Mass The fine-grained matrix of an igneous rock. Amygdules A vesicle in an igneous rock filled with secondary mineral matter by ground water.http://apartmangyula.com/images/92-toyota-corolla-manual-pdf.pdf Primary Minerals that have crystallized directly from cooling magma. Secondary Minerals that have formed after the magma has solidified. Essential (Minerals) A mineral necessary to classify a rock. Accessory (Minerals) A mineral not important in the classification of a rock, but may be used as a descriptor. Viscosity A liquid's resistance to flowing. Tuff The consolidated ash and pyroclastic fragments generates from a volcanic eruption. Lapilli Pebble-like bits of magma that harden before they hit the ground. Volcanic Breccia A rock composed of the angular fragments from a volcanic eruption. Agglomerate A rock composed of volcanic bombs and other rounded fragments from a volcanic eruption. Chapter 22 Summary Glossary About the Author Appendix 1 List of Geologically Important elements and the Periodic Table Appendix 2 Answers to Review Questions Appendix 3 Answers to Exercises Versioning History The answers are in italics. Click on a chapter link to go to the answers for that chapter. (Answers to the chapter-end questions are provided in Appendix 2.) Granitic rocks are hard and strong and difficult to break. They are dominated by feldspar (this one has both white plagioclase and pink potassium feldspar), but almost all have some quartz (which looks glassy) and a few per cent of dark minerals, like the black amphibole in this one. The metamorphic rock is then eroded to make more sediments, which are deposited and then buried to make sedimentary rock. This would likely take at least 60 million years. If the subducting crust is descending at 40 km per 100 km inland, the depth to the Juan de Plate beneath these volcanoes is between 80 and 120 km, or 100 km on average. At other times the flow spread out across the area. 2) Between January 2015 and January 2016 the flow did not extend any further northeast towards Pahoa. Instead it spread out across the plain to the north of Pu’ u’ o’ o. The risk would be increased if the eruption takes place in winter or spring when the amount of snow is at a maximum. The western side of Mt. Garibaldi has already collapsed several times since the last glaciation. There is a Pleistocene-aged lava flow clearly evident in the photograph. It flowed down the southern flank, and then turned west towards where Squamish is situated today. So the first project would be to establish about 5 additional seismic stations in the Squamish region. They don’t have to be right on the mountain, but can be placed near to existing roads and highways in the area. They need to be secured to bedrock. Every effort should be made to have them located on all sides of the mountain. The second project would be to establish some means of measuring deformation of the mountain itself. This could be done with tiltmeters or GPS stations, but GPS would be better. The GPS receivers have to be placed on the flanks of the mountain, and they also have to be installed right on bedrock. That could be a real challenge in winter or spring, when there is lots of snow. While this work is going on, we should charter a helicopter to fly around the mountain to see if there is any sign of eruptive activity or melting snow, and to look for convenient places to install GPS stations. We may want to land in a few different places. We could also establish a system to send out alerts via text message. There is also the potential for composite volcanism to the south of the South Island, east of the Macquarrie fault zone, although there appears to be some doubt about whether subduction is actually taking place in this region. The fragments may have been moved a short distance by a stream, but not enough to produce rounding. The mica crystals are consistently parallel to one another. There is no evidence of foliation. The surfaces of the sheets have a sheen to them. There is side-by-side relative motion on this plate boundary, and that makes it a transform fault. These folds are symmetrical, and although they are tight they are not isoclinal. They are overturned. Relative ages, from youngest to oldest: How does this affect the stream below the dam? If you ignore the major floods (the labelled ones), what is the general trend of peak discharges over that time. That is 555 hours, or 23 days. That should increase the rate at which water flows towards the well. The water table is slowly rising at this location. Since 2004 the lowest water level has risen from just above 4 m below surface to around 3.6 m above surface and the highest level has risen from around 0.3 m below surface to nearly at surface (0 m). Prior to 2004, where the points are not joined with lines, the trend appears to be similar. Explain and use the diagram below to illustrate the expected changes to the water table and the movement of the plume. Both wells B and C may receive contaminants and so the water from both may need treatment. But most houses are built on foundations that are excavated into the ground. This involves digging a hole and taking some material away, so we need to subtract what that excavated material weighs. Assuming our 150 m 2 house required an excavation that was 15 m by 11 m by 1 m deep, that’s 165 m 3 of “dirt,” which typically has a density of about 1.6 t per m 3. In this case weight has been removed from the slope by building the house. Interglacial 2 had two distinct warm episodes. The first one is done for you. That was a eustatic process. In response to the loss of ice in this region of coastal British Columbia there was a slower isostatic rebound of the crust, which is why this area is now back up above sea level. The body of water between the two is the Drake Passage. This effect may have lasted for several years, but its intensity would have decreased over time. The two strongest El Ninos (1983 and 1998) shown correspond with the highest recorded precipitation levels in Penticton. Some other strong El Ninos (1958 and 1973) are associated with strong precipitation within 6 months of the ENSO peak, but others show a negative correlation between ENSO and rainfall (marked with “?”). The main difference is that while the Tasmanian rocks are metamorphosed, the Purcell rocks are generally unmetamorphosed. The most common rocks by age are the Mesozoic rocks (Jurassic volcanic, Jurassic granite and Triassic volcanic). Click here to let us know! After you enter the vehicle identification number (VIN), the Owner's Manual for your vehicle is downloaded and is subsequently available without an Internet connection. Multiple vehicles can be managed within the Driver’s Guide. You can acquaint yourself with the features of your vehicle by reading the full Owner's Manual, searching by picture, or viewing the explanatory videos. The more familiar you are with your vehicle, the better control you will have on the road. BMW wishes you a safe and enjoyable drive. I’m one of those that have always traditionally read the owner’s manual when purchasing a new car. So nice to be able to look things up on my phone whenever the mood strikes me. Easy to use and the videos that come with it are a plus. Nice job BMW! Comes back with “No manual found for that vin”. But gives you an option to download a demo version of a user manual. I am not happy, but I should use a manual that is not for my car. I’d be not happy every time I went to try and use it. Or I would never rely on it so there for I would never use it. Why would I have on my phone. Why not allow you to select your year and model!!! What a waste of time. Well BMW, at least you know how to make cars. Hire someone who knows how to develop an app. Great features. I use it for entering navigation addresses as it seems to be just so much easier. It lets me me know about my calendar events, guides me to their locations, let’s me control my car remotely if I need to. Excellent overall! Or call 1-800-MY-APPLE. We therefore have this request: Please take the time to read this Owner’s Manual and familiarize yourself with the information that we have compiled for you before starting off in your new vehicle. Operator’s Vehicle Manual Guide. Years covered by this manual: 2008. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986.European models were outfitted with a dogleg version with close ratios and a 1:1 ratio for fifth gear. These include the Evo 1, Evo 2, and Sport Evolution, with upgrades including weight reduction, improved aerodynamics, taller front wheel arches (to allow 18-inch wheels to be used in DTM racing), bigger brake ducts and more power output from the engine.By the latter year, the cars, based on the regular M3, were equipped with six-speed gearboxes and were rated at 221 kW (300 PS; 296 hp). The M3 was not very competitive with the four-wheel drive cars on loose surfaces, but it was a very effective car on asphalt. Its most notable success was a victory on the Tour de Corse in 1987, driven by Bernard Beguin. It was the first M3 to use a six-cylinder engine, which has since been used the majority of M3 models (albeit in turbocharged form since 2014).
