Private sector builds were required to be rated against the Code so that homeowners knew whether their home was built to higher standards than the Building Regulations. In Practice Use of the Code for Sustainable Homes The Government withdrew the Code for Sustainable Homes on 27 March 2015 in a written ministerial statement following a review of housing standards. Planning consents can no longer require compliance with the Code for Sustainable Homes. There is also the option to adopt a nationally described space standard and security requirements have been included in the Building Regulations through the introduction of Part Q. In terms of energy efficiency, the Government has advised that local authorities are able to set energy efficiency standards higher than the Building Regulations using powers under the Planning and Energy Act 2008. In such cases, it should be read in conjunction with supplementary technical guidance and addendums to the Code. These amendments bring the Code in line with national guidance and regulatory changes, particularly in relation to Part L of the Building Regulations and surface water run-off and flooding. Overview of the Code for Sustainable Homes The Code measures the sustainability of a new home against nine categories of sustainable design, rating the “whole home” as a complete package. Each of the categories has an impact on the environment for which mitigation measures to reduce their impact can be objectively assessed, evaluated and delivered in a practical and cost-effective way. Assessment Procedures Assessment is carried out by specifically trained and accredited independent assessors. Reporting Quarterly statistical updates were provided by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG, now the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government) until the withdrawal of the Code in March 2015. The Code in Practice A star rating system is used with a blue star awarded for each level achieved, extending from one star to six (the maximum), depending on the extent to which the building has achieved the required Code standards. In order to achieve a particular Code level, and the associated sustainability rating, a home must integrate minimum standards, and attain additional points for other design features. The following are the environmental categories and issues (“M” designates mandatory aspects of the Code). Energy and CO 2 emissions: dwelling emission rate (M) fabric energy efficiency (M) energy display devices drying space energy labelled white goods external lighting low and zero carbon technologies cycle storage home office. Water: indoor water use (M) external water use. Surface water runoff: management of surface water runoff from developments (M) flood risk. Waste: storage of non-recyclable waste and recyclable household waste (M) construction site waste management composting. Pollution: global warming potential of insulants NOx emissions. The Code assigns one or more performance requirements (assessment criteria) to all of the environmental issues. When each performance requirement is achieved, a credit is awarded. The total number of credits available to a category is the sum of credits available for all the issues within it. The weighting factors show the contribution made by each category to the total performance recognised and rewarded by the Code. Mandatory minimum standards Three uncredited mandatory issues are: environmental impact of materials management of surface water runoff from developments storage of non-recyclable waste and recyclable household waste. If any of the standards for the three non-creditable issues are not met, then a zero rating will result regardless of the other credits achieved, including the creditable mandatory issues. Two issues which had been increasing in importance, and had increasing mandatory minimum standards were: dwelling emission rate indoor water use. Note: A definition of a zero carbon home was omitted from the 2014 addendum to the Code as it will be defined by future legislation. The final two issues with mandatory requirements are fabric energy efficiency (FEE) and lifetime homes. To achieve an overall Code rating of level 5 it is necessary to achieve at least seven credits in FEE. To achieve an overall Code rating of level 6 it is necessary to achieve at least seven credits in FEE and three credits in lifetime homes. If all the non-creditable mandatory standards are met, but one of the creditable mandatory issues fails to reach the minimum required to achieve a higher level, the rating will be determined by the lowest mandatory level met. The assessment process (now for legacy cases only) should progress in order through the environmental impact categories and issues. Check that the non-creditable mandatory issues have been met. The mandatory requirements for CO 2 emissions, FEE, internal water use and lifetime homes should be checked and confirmed at the minimum values to meet the Code level sought. The remaining tradable credits should be checked and confirmed that they contribute to the required Code level. Further credits are available on a free-choice or tradable basis from other issues so developers may choose how to add performance credits (converted through weighting to percentage points) to achieve the rating they are aiming for. The Directive requires that all new homes (and other homes, when they are sold or leased) have an Energy Performance Certificate providing key information about the energy efficiency and carbon performance of the home. To avoid the need for duplication, energy assessment under the Code uses the same calculation methodology. Practical Examples In 2006, the DCLG issued details of how some of the levels will be calculated. The examples below to detail the two extremes of levels under the Code for Sustainable Homes: Levels 1 and 6. Although the Code was subsequently updated and has now been withdrawn, the examples are useful in demonstrating how consideration of the various environmental issues can lead to the achievement of a particular Code level. Code Level 1 To be graded Level 1, a home would have to be 10 more energy efficient than one built to the standards of the Building Regulations 2006. This could be achieved by: improving the thermal efficiency of the walls, windows, and roof (eg by using more insulation or better glass) reducing air permeability by improving the control of the fresh air into a home, and the stale air out of a home — a certain amount of air ventilation is needed in a home for health reasons installing a high efficiency condensing boiler designing the fabric of the home to reduce thermal bridging (thermal bridging allows heat to easily escape between the inner walls and the outer walls of a home). The home would have to be designed to use no more than about 120 litres of water per person per day. However, this still does not complete the list of requirements. To be awarded Level 1, the home must amass a total of 36 points. Code Level 6 At the other extreme, a home meeting the exemplary Level 6 status will have to be completely zero carbon with zero net emissions of CO 2 from all energy use in the home. This could be achieved by: improving the thermal efficiency of the walls, windows and roof as far as is practically possible reducing air permeability to the minimum consistent with health requirements installing a high efficiency condensing boiler, or being on a district heating system carefully designing the fabric of the home to reduce thermal bridging using low and zero carbon technologies such as solar thermal panels, biomass boilers, wind turbines, and combined heat and power systems (CHP) (this would mean that energy taken from the national grid would have to be replaced by low or zero carbon generated energy, so that over a year, the net emissions would be zero). Furthermore, the home will have to be designed to use no more than about 80 litres of water per person per day. To achieve the standard would also mean that about 30 of the water requirement of the home was provided from non-potable sources such as rainwater harvesting systems or grey water recycling systems. Other minimum requirements are required for: surface water management materials waste management. In fact, they would need to address 90 of everything in the Code to achieve Level 6, including: energy efficient appliances and lighting supplying accessible water butts reducing surface water run-off as much as possible using highly environmentally-friendly materials minimising construction waste maximum, accessible provision for recycling improved daylighting, sound insulation and security building to the Lifetime Homes standard assessing and minimising the ecological impact of the construction of the home. Case studies Four volumes of case studies were issued by the DCLG, providing examples of how new Code Homes were designed, planned and built, and what they are like to live in. In February 2014, the Zero Carbon Hub published a guide that uses a number of new housing developments as illustrative schemes to demonstrate approaches that could be taken. Zero Carbon Strategies for Tomorrow’s New Homes gives specification details for three approaches categorised as: balanced, extreme fabric, or extreme low carbon technologies. It should be noted that the Zero Carbon Hub is no longer being actively contributed to or updated, but information on improving the performance of new homes is still accessible on its website. EcoHomes The Code for Sustainable Homes was developed using the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) EcoHomes System, which was itself intended to reduce the impact of affordable housing projects, in particular within the social housing sector. Since the withdrawal of the Code for Sustainable Homes, BRE has developed a voluntary standard, the Home Quality Mark (HQM), that is designed to provide an indication of the quality and performance of a new home allowing house builders to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. Using a five-star rating system, the HQM provides clear information to householders on the overall running costs of the home, its health and wellbeing benefits, the environmental footprint of the home as well as its resilience to flooding and overheating to allow for changes in climate. The HQM is now open for registrations in England, Scotland and Wales through a licensed HQM assessor. Removing widgets from a Home screen To remove an item from the Home screen, tap and hold the item until the Remove option appear s at the top of the screen. Simply drag the item to the Remove o ption. Changing the Home screen wallpaper Tap and hold any open space on the Home screen and tap Wallpapers. To choose from pre-selected background images, t ap an image at the bottom of the screen and tap Set wallpaper in the top- left corner of the screen. To choose an image to use as wallpaper tap My photos then select a location that contains imag es, such as Google Drive, Gallery, and others. Note You may not place widgets to th e left of the main Home screen. The virtual keyboard When you tap a text box to enter text, a n virtual keyboard will appear. Simply tap on keys to enter text. Tap and hold a key to select alternative characters (if available for that key), such as letters with accents or relat ed symbols. Note The layout of the keyboard (and some button icons) va ry slightly, depending on the app and information that is required. Predictive text or auto correction The Google keyboard can provide pred ictive text input. As you tap the letters of a word, a selection of words are disp layed above the keyboard that continue the sequence of letters tapped, or are a close match allowing for errors. The word list changes after every key press. If the word you need is displayed, you can tap on it to insert it into your text. To turn predictive text on or off with the Google keyboard, swipe left to the list of apps and tap Settings. Tap Show suggestions to tog gle this feature on or off. Editing text You can select and edit text in certain apps, such as text you have entered in a text field. Shutting down your t ablet If you won’t use your tablet for an extended period of time, turn it off to save battery power. To force a shutdown, press and hold the power button until the tablet shuts down (about four seconds). Note If your device’s battery gets too hot, you will be notified and advised to turn off the device. If you fail to turn it off, it will shut down automatically.
