Today I took a look at my old 1991 version (which I think was great) and came upon a treatment of one of the many projects I have on my list, which is replacing a tread on my back staircase. The book goes into lots of detail with great illustrations and explanations. Last night, I looked at the staircase material in the newer 2014 edition and there was almost nothing on staircase treads -- what was there all talked about stopping squeaks. Moreover, I prefer the illustration style in the old edition to that of the new edition. There is a much greater preponderance of photographs in the new edition and I much prefer the work or artists in these sorts books to those of photographers. The new edition has seemingly hundreds of shots of real people doing projects. I feel that this distracts from the task at hand, which is to focus on the projects themselves. In this regard, the old edition is far superior. Of course, the new edition has some treatments that the old one doesn't. There are some areas of concern that are treated in the new edition which were not in the 1991 edition. Also, of course, some materials are new and available tools have changed some. Clearly, however, I'm going to go to the old book in many instances when I need help with a project. This time I LIKE the photographs. There's a lot of great information about tools of all kinds that might be used in DIY around the house projects. I went from cover to cover and the great majority of the treatments are IMO worth reading even if you don't have immediate interest, i.e. just to familiarize yourself with the topic, ins and outs. I have a new found intention to read 90 of this book cover to cover including all the stuff at the start about tools. I know a lot about those things, but this book goes into a lot of details that I don't know about and there are many tips, little tricks of the trade explained. I think this book is really well written and I was thinking that they really did do a great job on this.http://fancyfreesingles.com/uploades/userfiles/ddx7025-installation-manual.xml I just gave it one more star, and it might deserve 5.My only complaint is that the information can be so basic that it can leave you scratching your head as to how to get to the final product if you will. Every entry gave me the basic information to get on the right track to do a little more research, but I could not rely on the given information to help me complete a task. One example would be the section on deck building. The instructions are basically sink posts, make deck. Some good information would be what exact materials I need, how to pour concrete into the posts, what lumber to use, how far apart the supports should be, etc. So there is a ton of info here and a great place to start, but do not expect more than a general overview and a place to start. That being said, I'm not sure one could expect more just know what you are getting. In addition most of this information is probably available online, but I'm a big fan of having things to actually hold and look at while I work.I like the Home Depot guide that had multiple home topics too but found it lacking in many areas where as this one has blown it out of the water in every way for the projects I've done so far. I don't usually give reviews or even long ones when I do but this reference text is something I stand behind for anyone who is a home owner so I thought I'd throw my opinion out there for anyone that's interested.Since I bought my house, I haven't encountered an issue it has no information on. I think a product like this is what you use to find out what questions to ask when approaching a problem you may not be have faced before. I will say you should still follow up for more thorough information. For example, I would not have been ready to tile my bathroom from this book alone, but without it, I may have unknowingly purchased the wrong thinset for the job. This book sent me to home Depot armed with the correct questions to get what I needed.https://skazkina.com/ru/boss-dr-220a-manual For new home owners in particular, I very much recommend this book. For example, for installing a vanity, there is no discussion on whether you should caulk around the sink area. This book doesn't contain enough pictures to fully explain certain instructions. But it does contain terminology that complete noobs wouldn't know. In other words, it's aimed at people who already have some knowledge of DIY.Got one for my son who is starting his family. Gave as wedding present so when he is ready to start his family, he will have the knowledge to make repairs and improvements and also how systems work in the house. He loves it too. Also going to use before buying his first house. His honey do list is already starting to accumulate.I've painted windows, installed electrical outlets, and gotten a few woodworking splinters. The guide is simple, well illustrated, and concise. Gives specific examples, but highlights principles.I looked at the electrical section wrt circuit breakers and power points and couldn't relate this to anything I have encountered in the UK. Do not purchase this book if you live in the UK.He has purchased a house that needs some attention so I thought the book would be helpful. It covers everything brickwork, concrete, tiling, woodwork, plumbing, electrics, glazing and insulation. There is also a section on some of the tools you will need some you can own others to hire. It is a really excellent book well worth is value.Very disappointing and quite honestly, a waste of money. Our payment security system encrypts your information during transmission. Register a free business account Seventeen chapters' worth of fixer-upper opportunities are enhanced with more than 3,000 photos and illustrations that would look equally at home in an upscale home decorating catalogue. The first few chapters cover hand and power tools, fasteners and adhesives, and are enough to incite hardware envy among even dwellers of tiny apartments. There is strange beauty in the cutaway views of five different hollow-wall fasteners and the machinations of nine types of pliers. But homeowners are, of course, the real target audience, and an all-new section on Landscaping reflects this with entries on fences, water gardens and retaining walls. The plumbing section offers a mega-view of wastewater-treatment systems as well as a micro-exploration of unclogging a toilet. For instance, a home satellite dish is pictured but not indexed or dwelled upon, while carpeting is charted, graphed and deconstructed in the extreme. AZ buyer 5.0 out of 5 stars They provide so much great information and you just can't beat the price. You can learn so much not only about how to do things yourself and save a lot of money, but you can see if the unscrupulous contractors are doing a good job when they come to your house to repair something. It's not just a book, it's an investment. I guarantee you that you can find something that can be used immediately! For the most part this was true, but I found that in several areas things were changed and illustrations of repairs left out. I got this new version as a gift for my son who just recently purchased a home and is in the process of doing repairs and up grades. But some of the things he is doing are not in the new version and he had to use my old book as a reference. But with that said, it is still a reliable reference that I feel a homeowner would benefit from having and is better than others that are on the market. There are a lot of helpful tips in the side bars. I use to own the black and decker repair manual but I gave it to my sister and bought this one to replace it. Both books are at par with eachother. This one has a great tool section so you can not only choose the right tool for the job but also use it correctly and maintain it as well. It's always a good idea to look at more than one source before starting something new. Even if you are not a DIY person, you can refer to this manual to see if you should even atempt it. Contractors cost big money and they may not do a better job than you. This book payed for itself with the first project and is well worth the money. The instructions a easy to understand and have very clear pictures or illustrations that shows exactly what needs to be done. There are also a lot of very helpful tip boxes scattered throughout the pages and they are all very helpful and worthwhile noting. I recommended reading the instructions through at least once before starting to make sure you get all of the needed tools and materials. This covers every home repair issue I have needed, often saving me the expense if calling a handyman, and has even helped me decide when a project was above my skill level, which also saved us a lot of time and money. Highly Recommended! CFHFor those searching for a home read how this book tells you to look for signs of damage, wear, cracks or water leaks. For the homeowner or for those wanting to fix stuff around the rental or the apartment, confidence is the what you'll get from this book. Anecdotally I went from being scared of wiring to having the confidence to wire my entire basement after I built it myself, oh and bye the way two years ago I couldn't nail two pieces of wood together. Every new homeowner should be issued this book as standard equipment, this thing will get some wear helping you fix wiring, concrete, siding, roofing, plumbing and outdoor projects. Wow that's all I have to say.It is so you can find it easier on your bookshelf. The kind of thinking that goes in to the shape of the book shows how good the book will be. As a beginning maintenance planner and an inexperienced homeowner. This book is a go to for all small projects.Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. This is a great reference and a resource tool for everyone that needs home improvement, I found a DIY handyman thanks to this great book. I do many but there are some things that I shy away from. As soon as this book arrived I went straight to work on some minor electrical issues we have had. It showed up just in time for one of our switches to malfunction and a ceiling fan to pretty much die. I am way to chicken to tackle plumbing issues though I have done a few very basic.
