This happens when the upper thread is not correctly placed in the tension mechanism and has not been threaded through the take-up lever. To resolve this, rethread the machine, making sure to first raise the presser foot lifter and raise the needle to its highest position, so that the thread can be properly seated in the tension mechanism and take up lever. Check that the upper thread is feeding freely without obstruction (like getting stuck behind the spool cap or getting caught on any rough spots o the thread spool itself). Make sure the bobbin is correctly seated in the bobbin case (bobbin holder), and check that the upper thread tension is not set too tightly. Thread can also shred if the machine needle is worn out, or if the needle is the wrong style and size for the thread being used.http://www.bankubezpieczen.pl/userfiles/datalogit-user-manual.xml

The thread should pass freely through the eye of the needle in order to sew properly. Use threads that have a smooth, even filament. Lower the presser foot and resume sewing. Increase the stitch length setting and resume sewing. Discard the old needle and insert a new needle, appropriate for the thickness and type of fabric being sewn. Be sure that the machine is correctly threaded and there are not obstructions (for example, thread getting caught behind the spool cap or a “rough spot” on the spool itself). Check also that the upper thread tension control is set correctly (consult your machine manual). Make sure that the needle goes all the way up into the needle clamp and that the flat side (at the top section of the needle) is facing toward the back. For instance, if you are sewing a stretch knit fabric using a regular point needle, you could be experiencing skipped stitches. Switching to a ball point needle will prevent stitches from skipping on stretch knit fabrics. Discard the needle and insert a new one, appropriate for the fabric you will be sewing. Ensure that both threads are under the presser foot and placed toward the back of the machine before lowering the presser foot to start sewing. Just let the feed dogs (or feed teeth) do the job of drawing the fabric along under the foot. For example, dense stitches usually require the use of either a Satin Foot or Open Toe Foot, so that the stitching can pass freely underneath. If the regular, All-Purpose Foot is used for dense stitching, stitches could get “stuck” under the foot. Just switch to a presser foot more appropriate for these types of stitches. Generally, use a tear-away stabilizer for woven fabrics and a cut-away stabilizer for stretch fabrics. It should be back in stock very soon, so please check back with us. As you get into more and different kinds of machines, you'll find it's impossible to find Adjuster's Manuals for all of them, or even worse, sometimes you go to the trouble of tracking down the manual--and the part you need to fix isn't even mentioned. It helped me fix some problems on a Singer 111w155 industrial that I couldn't find any assistance for. As for a more short-term solution, one idea might be to do a little research and find out if there are other models that are similar to the 413 and 538, in the way that the 403 and 500a have a few things in common. Then, if you can acquire an Adjuster's Manual for the similar model, there might be enough overlap in it to help you. The other short-term solution is to jump on the Vintage Singers Yahoo Group and do a search of the archives to see if anyone's had, and fixed, the specific problems you're having. Even small reloading-centric shops like the Wolf’s Den Gun Shop in Hugo, MN, have a selection of ARs and other Modern Sporting Arms. They also sell better than traditional rifles. The other famous and popular FAirchild production, the A-10.Apparently Stoner did not consider this a true direct impingement system (like seen on earlier post WWII rifles such as the French MAS 40 series), since the bolt and carrier assembly is literally a gas piston. He was right, but the term has stuck as applied to the AR series of rifles and is unlikely to go away. Anyway, the point is that conventional gas-operated rifles have a forward reciprocating piston housed in an gas block, that then acts upon an operating rod which initiates movement of the bolt ( short stroke piston ), or they have an operating rod that incorporates a piston into its tip where the operating rod is attached to the bolt mechanism ( long stroke ). Stoner’s design simply tapped gas from the barrel, channeled it through a simple hollow tube, back into the guts of the bolt carrier in a cavity behind the bolt. The gas expanding in this chamber caused the bolt to press firmly against the chamber, while the carrier itself moved to the rear to then unlock and then withdraw the bolt to cycle the gun. This system translates to less mass in the gun which facilitates a lighter overall weight, and particularly in the front of the gun which facilitates better handling. Furthermore, since there is no reciprocating mass (like a big piston or op rod) banging around attached to the barrel, this rifle is inherently very accurate, as there are fewer stresses placed on the barrel as the bullet passes through it. The third feature was the low bore axis. This allows a recoil impulse straight into the shoulder. Traditional style rifles use a stock that has drop to it, leaving the barrel itself above the shoulder, contributing to the majority of the muzzle-rise experienced when shooting. The low bore axis placed the recoil impulse lower and essentially removed the pivot point, or fulcrum, at the shoulder that traditional designs experience upon firing, and thus reducing muzzle rise. This also necessitated the vertical pistol grip so the rifle could be held comfortably. As you see here, you can look straight down the top of the stock (okay, slightly to the side) and draw a straight line all the way to the muzzle. This aids in muzzle and recoil control. Here you see two totally different design philosophies: a tilting style locking bolt from an FN-FAL and a rotating bolt head from a large frame AR. The fourth feature was the combination multi-lugged rotating bolt head and barrel extension. The vast majority of rifles to this point used a system where the bolt would have two or possibly three lugs and would lock into the recesses in the receiver, with the barrel then screwed into the front of the receiver. A multi-lugged bolt, in this case seven (eight if you include the non-bearing lug on the extractor), allows several things. The first is a short rotation distance for locking and unlocking. Any centerfire rifle must have a locked breach for safety reasons. Without getting into a huge amount of science here, this works well in a self-loading rifle and we’ll get into that and other reasons in a later chapter. It is used to illustrate the important and valid point that tools do not commit crimes or perform actions without the input of human direction. Even robots that perform tasks without direct supervision do so according to the human programming that has been built into them. Banning a tool, in this case the firearm, may indeed reduce the number of suicides or crimes committed by firearms, but that crime will simply be committed using another tool, such as a baseball bat or knife, or automobile, or pills. This further served to lighten the rifle. Indeed the original AR-10, chambered in 7.62x51 NATO, weighed less than seven pounds, about the average for the current batch of.223 carbines. It is not uncommon to find AR-15-style rifles today that have receivers, upper or lower or both, made from polymers and carbon fiber. The original AR-10 looked like this. You may note the charging handle in the carry handle and the very slim handguards. Photo internet sourced, www.dogswar.ru. The origin story goes from the AR-10 prototype on to the AR-15 prototype. They did not succeed. Fairchild and later Armalite divested itself of the rights to the gun and sold them to Colt. Colt continued to push the downsized AR-15, chambered in.223 Remington, and finally had success as the Vietnam War began to really heat up. In its brilliance, rather than issuing the rifle and ammunition as it was designed, the Army decided to alter both the rifle and its ammunition, most notably changing the powder specification. The powder change resulted in critical malfunctions because it caused the cyclic rate of the rifle under full auto to increase significantly. This, and the failure to issue sufficient cleaning supplies and instruction on the rifle’s use and maintenance, resulted in the rifle gaining a sour reputation among the early users in the military. However, as the kinks were ironed out, cleaning equipment issued, and instruction commenced, the rifle became a very effective tool for the infantryman. Controversy continues to this day on its reliability, its ammo, and other specifics that we aren’t going to go into a great deal of detail here. What we will do, however, is explore the suitability to the civilian market, and the cornucopia of support for the gun, including maintenance equipment, accessories, ammunition, and other great stuff that will help you to make a wise buying decision either on the firearm itself, or on the supporting cast of equipment and knowledge. POLITICAL ISSUES Before we go into the fun stuff, we really should examine the politics that seem to surround the AR series of rifles and other black rifles that are gaining in popularity. Particularly, it is important to analyze the use (or more accurately, the lack of use) of these black rifles, or MSRs (Modern Sporting Rifles, the common term for the entire spectrum), in violent crimes. This is the primary argument used to promote the restriction of such firearms in the civilian marketplace. Certainly, internationally the AK series of rifles has been used to commit more acts of violence, more mayhem, and more mass murders, than any rifle in modern history. Also certainly, that has no bearing on this discussion, as this is the United States of America, not Africa or Asia. Unlike in most third world regions, we are a nation that is ruled by laws, and more importantly, a nation with a majority population that is willing to be bound by those laws, even if adherence to those laws can be very personally inconvenient. Especially when those inconvenient laws are criminally stupid, like most gun control laws happen to be. Analysis of the federal government’s own data shows that ARs, AKs, or anything else in the so-called assault weapon category are used in crimes with such infrequency as to completely debunk the above argument entirely. More violent deaths are perpetrated by the deadly use of bare hands, such as striking or strangling by far than are perpetrated by the use of an MSR. However, if you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it, hence the reason that the used in crimes argument persists. This is not to say that MSRs are not used at all in crimes. In fact, several high profile shootings and mass shootings were initiated with such rifles, which served to keep the object in the spotlight, so to say, and to give such firearms an undeserved stigma that the political left continues to exploit every chance they get. Without getting too partisan here, it should be noted that, even if they were used in significant, even most, cases of violent crime, it would still not justify the removal of the type from personal ownership. What a criminal does with his gun should have no impact on what a law-abiding citizen does with hers. The sad fact is that existing gun control laws do nothing to address the use of the criminal’s gun, except to perhaps increase his punishment. Rather they serve to deny the law abiding from a product which can be and often is of use to them, and is of no threat to anyone else. These are uses that, because of the nature of the law-abiding citizen, do not violate the law. Therefore, the imposition of a gun control law affects only the law abiding, which are precisely NOT the people that are causing the problem to begin with. The kind of logic that suggests we ban an object (in this case firearms, but there are other examples) because of the misbehavior of a minority of a population is beyond asinine, demonstrating either the pure, gleaming incapability of thinking rationally (an indicator that you should not be making decisions for anyone), or demonstrating a desire to control the law abiding population for nefarious or selfish personal ends (an indicator that one is not to be trusted). So, why the rant? If you purchase an AR-15 you should be well informed as to the state of the laws that apply to the ownership thereof. In most states there are none. In others, like my home state of Minnesota, a permit (simply acquired) is necessary for an AR or handgun. In others, they are virtually forbidden. It is then ironic that in those places where restriction is the greatest, the highest concentrations of violent crime are present. If you live in a freer state, you can enjoy AR ownership and all the attending benefits thereof. If you live in a restrictive state or city, where the masters do not trust you with ARs or firearms of any kind, or where your neighbors are unable to think rationally, well, you find yourself screwed over. My sympathies are upon you. You are missing a treat and you are living in a system that limits your rights because of insecure peoples’ insecurities, and because of the desire of powerful people to remain in power over you, disregarding your input. While the existence of stupid laws is infuriating, that does not mean that they should be violated. We live by law, not by decree, and laws can be changed peacefully over time. Until then, make sure that the guns you own, or are about to own, conform to the statutes of the area in which you dwell. Unfortunately, many jurisdictions limit the type of AR you can own. They do so based upon either cosmetic issues or functional issues that have no relation to their suitability for anything. A common example would be banning the use of high capacity (really, standard capacity) magazines, or even limiting the number of cartridges that you may have in them. This is like banning high horsepower (really, standard horsepower) engines in a Porsche to only 300 horsepower. You may not have a car that can exceed 70 mph; no one needs such a thing. Guess what? It’s none of your friggin’ business what I need, nor are you in any position to determine such a thing. Yet politicians and gun banners never cease attempting to limit how many rounds you can have in your gun at one time based upon need. It’s just like with a high speed car. I have the ability to easily exceed 150 mph, but I do not because I am willing to obey the speed limit of 70 mph for a number of reasons, not the least of which is safety and concern for other drivers. If I ripped through an intersection next to a grade school, I would never be able to stop soon enough to avoid hitting child in the crosswalk, a child that would certainly die if that event occurred. In the same way, I might have or desire a 60-round magazine for my AR-15. I am capable of killing at least 60 people with that if I so wished, but I won’t, because I am a law-abiding citizen with a healthy respect for the rule of law, the societal and cultural bases for those laws, for human life, and for a personal life lived outside the cold, gray, concrete walls of a penitentiary. A heck of a lot more people are killed by irresponsible driving than by the use of MSRs like AR-15s. A typical Minnesota Permit to Carry looks like this. In a way it’s a bit of an insult to a law abiding gun owner, since no criminal would ever get one, but still an insult that is fairly easily stomached. The fees are not horrible and it’s good for five years. Despite having to pay the state to exercise a fundamental right, the Minnesota regulations for someone who possesses one of these are actually quite permissive. The anti-gun activists like to use a very broad definition of children. If any of you are parents and have taken your children to a pediatrician sometime in the last few years, you may have been asked or been given a small survey asking if you have any firearms in the home. The ostensible justification for such a random, seemingly unrelated question is this: according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a left-wing activist group masquerading as a physicians association, firearms are the second leading cause of deaths of children. What they don’t say (and unfortunately most pediatricians don’t bother to research to find this out), is that when they say children they mean children up to the age of 23 or 25 (depending on the study). The connotation of the word children is always that of adolescents, not teenagers, not anyone over 18 years of age. They have to include up to the ages of 23 or 25 to get the stats and numbers they need to make this statement. The vast majority, upwards of 90 of these numbers, include the deaths of gang members between the ages of 16 and 23 or 25. Um, a 21 year old gang member fighting over drug distribution turf is not a child. So the moral of the story is to verify crazy talk, because even a two-second perusal of this stat should indicate to anyone with an ounce of common sense that it is off somehow. If your pediatrician asks this, take the time to explain that, first, it’s none of her business, and second, how the political element in this country has skewed her numbers to get her to become a sleeper activist for their cause. I guarantee that she does not consider anyone over 18 or even 8 or 10 years of age to be a child. This is how I respond when a doctor asks if there are guns in my home. No one needs this car or the muscle under the hood. Another example is the protruding pistol grip. The sole purpose of a protruding pistol grip is for the user to safely and comfortably control the firearm. The reason they are there is necessitated by the low bore axis we talked about earlier, which aids in controlling recoil and muzzle rise. Apparently this is an icky feature and only terrorists need to use one. Again, this is asinine. Banning a feature that makes the rifle MORE controllable is based on bizarro logic. Collapsible or folding stocks. Collapsible stocks allow multiple people to use the same rifle comfortably, or allow the same person to use the gun comfortably when he has more or less clothing on. Pretty simple. Folding stocks are just cool. They allow the rifle to be stored in a smaller space or allow it to be carried as a smaller package. There are several legitimate uses in combat but that is not the point. Bizzarro logic. Collapsible stocks make the same gun shootable for the large frame of an adult and the small frame of a child. Bayonet lugs. If you can find me any story where a criminal used a mounted, fixed bayonet to commit a violent crime I will be astonished.
