I was there in 1996, ok that is a long time ago, but I could not camp wild, I got taken to the police station just to asking if i could sleep in the train station as it was pouring rain and i only had a bicycle, no car. If on private property ask for permission ( and buy some local product like some goat cheese). But remember- no noise, and dont leave anything but your footsteps, and dont taje anything but pictures. Dont try to do wild camping next to a big street or parking lot. Put up your tent after day visitors have left and put it down before the next day visitors arrive. I must admit, when I was in switzerland the eurail pass saved me (one of the few countries that it works well because you don’t pay fees on top of your pass, and because train fares are normally very expensive). I agree with you, the best thing to do in Switzerland is to hike because thats free. I did do the Jungfrau bahn but apart from that i steered clear of the adventure stuff (do that in NZ for half the price!). I must say I am surprised you stay in Interlaken, I prefer to get up into the mountains and stay in the villages such as Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, found Interlaken to be too big and touristy, the smaller mountain villages are nicer, and you get to be closer to the hiking trails. Yep food is expensive, I stocked up in Italy before crossing the border as it was cheaper but if you miss out on the chocolate then you haven’t really been to Switzerland.
