Some of the techniques in the book might work in the hands of someone who really knows what they're doing, but that person probably has better tools (even I have those!) and could probably end up with a better final product. The AR-15 platform is pretty forgiving of a lack of precision, and from the looks of some of these methods, it's a good thing. I was hoping for a little more information on finishing an 80 lower than it includes, but to be fair, that's not what the author claimed it would be. The casting the author uses includes an already hollowed-out fire control cavity (where the trigger goes). These castings are no longer available due to changes in ATF policy. What you get nowadays is a forging or casting with a completely solid fire control cavity (no cavity, per current ATF guidance), and you have to machine out the entire cavity yourself. This book gives no instructions for machining the fire control cavity, other than cleaning up the existing cavity in a casting that you can no longer purchase. A minor point is that the book tells you how to build a legal post-ban AR receiver according to the law as it existed prior to the 2004 sunset of the Assault Weapons Ban. The book has not been updated to cover what your current (post 2004) legal options are. Now that the law has sunsetted, for instance, can I use imported parts on my AR. These criticisms aside, the book does demonstrate clearly that many of the machining operations can be done with simple tools; cordless drill, hand files, belt sander, etc. You don't need to have a Bridgeport mill or a CNC lathe to get the job done.This book provides that experience. Photos are clear, text is understandable and I now have a pretty good understanding on how the bottom side of the AR-15 functions. And you don't need a milling machine or a Unimat to build your own lower, either. It doesn't look all that complicated.There isn't even one exploded view, no description of how the parts install. There is alot of information on how to stay legal (written by an ex-cop) and there is a great deal of M-16 vs AR-15 parts. There is little information on assembling order, checking fitment or any real usable data. Skip it. Save your money. Find a different guide.The focus of the book is on selecting a lower receiver blank and doing the necessary machining and other work to make it a usable lower receiver, assembling the parts of a lower receiver and then testing it. For the non-machinist, non gunsmith it looks like a daunting project. There's certainly value in that message. There is a lot on the laws but I would be concerned that the book was published in 2004 and some of the material may be out of date. In summary, if you are specifically interested in purchasing a lower receiver blank and converting it to a working lower receiver assembly this is probably a good, well detailed book, if you are looking for more than that you should probably look elsewhere. I suspect that the cost information is out of date.I found that it was exceptionally well written with the directions and cautions to use in the construction of the rifle. The construction requires a capability to mill some of the parts of the rifle and other parts can be purchased. This work book is very necessary to successfully complete the project.The title implies that this book is a step-by-step guide for building an entire AR-15. It had no procedures or steps to complete the upper receiver what so ever and the lower receiver steps were schetchy at best. I found going to the internet and downloading the step-by-step procedures for the upper and lower receivers much more helpful and they cost nothing at all. This was a wasted purchase.To be honest, the photos are out of focus-barely visible in some cases and just not a good book. I will give it to a friend-probably should put emphasis on x-friend after receiving the book. Pins and springs can (and probably will) fly across the room. A shop apron is also helpful to protect your clothing. Place a mat like the Tipton Gun Cleaning and Maintenance Mat over your work area to keep parts from rolling around or getting lost. The mat will also help protect your guns and parts from potential damage. If you have a clean floor or even if you place a white towel or some plain covering on the floor, it will be easier to find these small parts.Please don't skimp here, as the quality of your work will suffer. Use the right tool for the job. Try to use brass punches whenever possible to reduce the chance of marring the finish. The schematic is helpful in finding the correct names of parts and determining what they look like.Refer to the pictures to aid you in this grouping process. Once the pin is firmly started, you should not have to hold the forward assist in place and you can use a large brass punch to drive the pin in until it is barely sticking up. If you find this too awkward, you can use a small punch as a slave pin to keep the Forward Assist Assembly compressed so you can use both hands. You may have to take a small punch and drive the pin a bit further until it is flush or even slightly recessed (just look at both sides to try and center the pin in the Upper Receiver) Forward Assist Assembly is now installed.Barely start the Ejection Cover Pin so it stays in place on its own, making sure the end without the snap ring is started first. Masure the bolt is positioned so that theextractor is on the left side of the bolt when looking at the bolt face. The holes in the Bolt Cam Pin will need to be perpendicular to the Bolt Carrier Key in order for the Bolt Cam Pin to clear the Bolt Carrier Key for insertion. If the Bolt Cam Pin will not go into the bolt, check the bolt orientation, as it may need to be rotated 180 degrees.Since the Bolt Carrier is hollow, the Firing Pin Retaining Pin needs to go through the hollow part of the inside of the Bolt Carrier and enter the hole on the other side before it emerges on the other side. It can be a little tricky to achieve this alignment and pounding on the pin will not help. Once in proper alignment, this pin should slide in easily. However, you will have to remove these parts to continue with the installation of the Barrel Assembly. Insert the Charging Handle Assembly by lining up the tabs on the Charging Handle with the grooves inside the Upper Receiver.The Bolt Carrier Assembly will not go into the Upper Receiver if the Bolt is not pulled out. The Ejection Port Assembly should pop open. When you do this the Ejection Port Cover will pop open. This insert keeps the Upper Receiver from being crushed when you tighten it into the Vise. Make sure the pin on the Barrel lines up with the slot in the Upper Receiver. Slide Barrel all the way into the Upper Receiver until the pin hits the back of the slot. If you are installing another type of handguard, instructions may vary. We skipped this step, as it will permanently install the Outer Receiver Nut. We were able to hold the other Receiver Nut in place while tightening the Inner Barrel Retainer Nut. If you are not able to do this, Loctite will be necessary. Do not over tighten. If you are not using Loctite, make sure you hold onto the Outer Receiver Nut so the gas holes stay in alignment.If you are not using Loctite, make sure you hold onto the Outer Receiver Nut so the gas holes stay in alignment.
