Sharon A King 5.0 out of 5 stars This book was an excellent purchase for me. It discusses and explains things that I would not have considered or known about on my own. I had already done a lot of research about translation on different internet sites and blogs, but this book gives more practical, realistic advice and will be a big help in deciding whether I want to pursue this career. It may not prove to be as useful for someone who is experienced, but I definitely recommend it for those who are in the consideration stage or just starting out in language translation. The book begins with a detailed history of translation going back to the time when Buddhist monks translated and adapted Indian sutras into Chinese. We first learn that those interested in becoming a translator should be fluent in their native language and at least one secondary language. Ferailleur-Dumoulin goes on to describe the courses and training involved to obtain a Degree or Certificate in Translation. She names several Associations where she recommends you become accredited, such as the American Translation Association.http://www.tis.az/userfiles/d-link-kvm-410-manual.xml Next are the necessary materials one needs to be a successful translator, which include monolingual dictionaries, thesauri, and reference books, both written and digital, and also, the software and Computer Aided Translation Tools necessary. Other technical tools should include a fax machine, high speed Internet access, and even a simple magnifying glass for reading small print. Other helpful sections cover marketing your self as a freelancer, networking venues, and how to build an effective resume. If you're not sure how much to charge your clientele or how to invoice or collect fees, don't worry; Ferailleur-Dumoulin has that covered. She talks about legal aspects such as confidentiality agreements, contracts, and liability insurance. She looks at running your own business including building a website, advertising, and hiring staff. The Internet and other media outlets have shrunken our world. This, along with the growing global economy, keeps language translation increasingly in demand. A career in translation can be lucrative, especially for those who specialize in more than one area of expertise. The information is easy to find; the writing is clear and does not alienate the beginner or layman. 2009 Authorhouse By William R. Potter for Reader's Choice Reviews. There is no where else where you can really get the professional training and the sound academic environment that we provide here at the institute, and for me that was the real draw. I really loved the blend of the academics and the professional and the type of professionals that it prepares for the world out there. Here at the institute I learned how to interpret both consecutively and simultaneously in both directions into English and into Spanish. Whether they’re interpreting for international visitors or international conferences, localizing materials for various agencies, or translating documents for people. We’re in the actual booth wearing headsets, speaking into the microphone, and sometimes people are actually relying on our interpretation to listen to the event. And the multitude of languages spoken here is really impressive as well. And I think that makes for a very vibrant campus community. Everyone really has done fascinating things. So it’s really helpful when you can actually interact with people coming from another country and to get to know them. The programs are relatively short, and in two years, in fact if not sooner, our students and our colleagues are working together out there in the community. So I think that provides for really unique mentoring relationships. They are working in the field, so they are translators and interpreters. So whenever we have a question related to the profession, they have the answer, and they are willing to help us become one of them, one of their colleagues. The Middlebury Institute is one of few graduate programs in the world that offers a combined degree that prepares you for expert professional work both in translation and interpretation. Our MA in Conference Interpretation prepares you to interpret in two modes: consecutive and simultaneous. The degree also prepares you to sight translate documents aloud in a different language as needed during meetings or as an aid to simultaneous interpretation in a booth. Once you are on campus, you will be able to explore these exciting possibilities with your academic advisor. Each program has skill-based and language-specific courses, experienced faculty, and extensive access to internship and employment opportunities.
