The CogAT is a test where the questions require a special reasoning. The best thing you can do to succeed in the test is be prepared and know what type of questions to expect. Additionally, without enough practice, you cannot develop the skills that will allow you to answer the questions in the same time constraint. We knew he would be able to enter the program at school next year, he just needed some practice and confidence for taking the entrance test. We tried this book in order to prepare him. Working with him at home about a month before the test. Unlike some other reviewers, it was a not a fun exercise for him. As expected, the first few sessions sitting down, even starting with the simplest things and not spending too much time with it, was difficult. And that's the point. The more we worked with him, the more he felt comfortable. Had we not purchased this book and prepared him, he would have given up on the test and not even complete it. I am happy to report that when it came time to take the real test, he never complained and did his best. He even passed and was accepted into the program.My other 2 children have used other cogat books available on Amazon and they did not get over 80. The book helped her see a variety of problems with different level of difficulties ranging from easy to difficult. I recommend this book for any parents trying to get their child in an advanced program.Some simply don't make sense at all. I was seeking to familiarize my child with the exam format, not to discourage them with the hardest style challenge questions available. I also utilized another review book and it seemed better aligned with what the test would actually look like. One good aspect of this book (the one being reviewed here) is that it provides explanations for all answers; and I do believe that is helpful. If you have already used other study guides and are looking for something more challenging - this is probably a good choice.It has to be edited heavily to become useful. Anastasia 3.0 out of 5 stars However, I am a little disappointed. Yes- there are many practice questions and that does help get the child accustomed to the types of questions. However, there is almost NO instruction whatsoever. There is no analysis as to why a certain answer is the correct answer. That's not helpful because sometimes I can't even figure out why a certain answer is the correct one. Similarly, there is little to no instruction on how to tackle each type of question. Also- I think this might be a problem with the test itself- there are sometimes more than one correct answer to a question (I don't have room to give examples)- but that's a really good reason why an explanation for the correct answer would be helpful- because obviously if we are not getting the correct answer, we are not applying our reasoning as expected (and I am an adult with a doctorate level education- so if I can't figure it out, I'm not sure how my 6 year old child would, even if he is gifted!).He was excited and motivated to do the problem solving. I am an elementary school teacher and think this is a great resource. With each question I would have him explain why he chose that answer and he liked explaining to me his reasoning. Many times it was in ways that I hadn’t seen myself, but made sense once he showed me his thinking. I could see his confidence building and his excitement.
