Since the starter motor doesn’t spin all the time like the alternator the bearings aren’t usually the problem. The Armature is a heavy long-lasting component and can often be cleaned or reconditioned. This applies to both foreign and domestic automobiles. Another thing I inspect is the commutator bars on the armature. When the brushes wear out the carbon works into the spaces between the commutator bars. You want to make sure you can clean this out and there’s no damage to the surface, because this is where the new brushes will ride. As in the case with the alternator a core charge is also due for a starter motor. The automotive parts company will return it to their factory where it’s reconditioned and then resold to the next customer. The CV stands for constant velocity. Basically this is a large heavy duty universal joint that drives the wheels while they’re turned and go up and down. The factory covers the CV joint on a front wheel drive car with a flexible rubber boot. After a couple of decades, this rubber begins to harden and develop cracks. As the lubrication level decreases wear increases on the CV joint. Drivers of high mileage front wheel drive cars will often complain about a clicking or grinding sound from the wheel area when this situation occurs. The complaint is most evident when the car is taking off from a stop with the wheels turned. This includes the inner tripod joint that attaches to the transmission, the shaft, the outboard CV joint and the hub assembly. It seems kind of wasteful to replace this entire unit when the only bad part is the CV joint itself. However, with stiff competition, rebuilt driveshafts are often available for popular models at very reasonable prices. Since there’s a bit of work involved in replacing just the CV joint you’ll have to make this judgment call on your own. A basic set of snap ring pliers is usually the only odd tool that you might need. It’s also recommended that you check your Dodge auto repair manual for the procedure for your specific model.When these old rides start running poor, getting rotten gas mileage or stall it might be time to rebuild the carburetor. Reconditioning this low tech fuel delivery system makes a great weekend project. See if you should replace or rebuild an old carburetor. Not only do they sound amazing at idle, but the further you push your foot down on the gas pedal, the better they sound. Although this upgrade remains popular, because of the noise a tuned exhaust header creates, there is actually a scientific reason to go for this aftermarket upgrade. If we relate both of these upgrades to how an athlete performs we can better understand why we’ll see a big boost in horsepower. The intake manifold represents the inhalation of oxygen for a human being. The exhaust manifold represents the exhale, but more importantly, the ability to expel all of the air from the lungs. This allows us to take in the maximum amount of oxygen on the next inhale. Imperfections in the casting slowed down the intake of air and fuel. In the same way the sharp bends and rough inside castings of a standard exhaust manifold reduce the flow of exhaust. If we only increase the ability for the intake to pull in more air and fuel, without increasing flow on the exhaust side we don’t reap all of the benefits. So let’s talk about a few reasons to upgrade the exhaust headers. On a classic muscle car era automobile you’ll find a compact part with 90 turns and ports that share the task of removing exhaust fumes from multiple cylinders. These exhaust manifolds are so inefficient that it actually creates back pressure in the combustion chamber. In other words, exhaust gases don’t flow out fast enough to empty the cylinder. In turn, this restriction of exhaust flow robs the engine of generating its full ability to produce horsepower and torque. When using an aftermarket exhaust header you find dedicated tubes for each cylinder. In addition, you find that the surfaces inside are highly polished. Instead the exhaust takes a long flowing turn that enhances the ability to remove exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. This improves the volumetric efficiency of the engine. Therefore, we can say high-performance exhaust headers provide enhanced efficiency, because of the large diameter tubing, long flowing bends and polished inside surfaces to reduce drag and back pressure. The factory installed these compact manifolds because they didn’t have the room in the engine compartment. With that said, they also didn’t see it as the best way to increase horsepower at the time. Nevertheless, installing aftermarket headers on some classic muscle cars presents major challenges. I installed a pair of Lakewood performance exhaust headers on a friend’s Dodge Charger RT. Long story short, the header installation on the big block 440 cubic inch engine became a nightmare. We purchased model specific parts from a reputable Mopar specialist that designed the headers specifically for the Dodge Charger application. In addition, interference with the upper control arms and the tie rods became another issue. After we completed the installation the true problems began to surface. In order to clear some suspension parts the driver side header becomes the lowest part under the automobile. After going over a few speed bumps the tubes that carried exhaust gases from the front cylinders became completely smashed closed. Instead of increasing efficiency the end result became exactly the opposite. In fact, you can even find an article about nitrous oxide upgrades you can put in the trunk to provide the boost you’re looking for. But no matter where we decide to boost performance, deciding to upgrade the exhaust headers maximizes the benefits of all the other alterations. I’m talking about cars like the Chevrolet Malibu Super Sport and the Ford Mustang pony cars. These automobiles utilized some of the most inefficient exhaust manifolds ever created by man. It’s not that the original designers of these engines did not understand volumetric efficiency, they just approached the horsepower wars in a different way. They decided to increase combustion ratios and cubic inches to achieve the desired performance level. Of course, they also had leaded fuel available to them at the time. This forced them in the direction of improving the intake and exhaust cycles on modern automobiles. Therefore, the general rule of thumb becomes the newer the automobile the less performance gains you’ll find from upgrading the intake and exhaust manifolds. Why? It’s because the automotive manufacturers upgrade the exhaust headers on their own. They also do a good job on the intake side of manufacturing efficient cold air intakes and intake plenums installed on the assembly line. For people with trucks, it’s For people with trucks, it’s worth considering an upgrade before traveling. Lower fuel efficiency means worrying about fuel costs at a time when money is tight for everyone. Nobody wants that—Taking a drive should give you a chance to relax. Or, maybe you’re shopping for your first truck and you’ve never explored cab types before. Read this quick article for a refresher on how they compare. If you’ve heard other names before, chances are they came from a particular automaker. Some brands want to stand out and don’t think that the standard names represent their brands well enough. That might be alarming information for people still trying to decide between a Dodge Ram and a Ford F-150. If there’s no one name for the cab style you’re looking at, how do you compare between brands? The main differences are between the number of doors on the respective cabs, their seating capacity and passenger space, and how much cargo capacity they offer. With this information, getting the categories to line up with different automakers and their cab names is a breeze. That doesn’t mean that it’s more common than the other kinds of truck cab. What makes it “regular” is that it’s the most basic kind in terms of space and features. They also have a single row of seating, not two. They’re best if you tend to travel by yourself and don’t carry too much inside the cab. It does have comfortable-enough seating for three people, including the driver. You may also have the option to upgrade a regular cab’s features. That option has some added comfort without the full cost of a bigger cab. It could be right for you if you’re almost always alone in your truck or have no more than one passenger at a time. Some categorize it as a “double cab,” but other automakers use “double cab” to refer to a crew cab. Consider something else if you want a standard backseat’s worth of passenger room, though. While this cab variety has four doors and two rows of seating, the back row of doors and seats are smaller than average. Smaller passengers may be able to squeeze out the smaller back doors. In any case, an extended or quad cab doesn’t prioritize passenger space. The amount of legroom in the backseat of a quad cab is less than that offered by some small cars. A long trip in the backseat of an extended cab is cramped for most adults and gets old, fast. It’s also not a bad choice for drivers who need to bring extra gear in the cab with them. If you carry more stuff than you do passengers in the front, you might not care to spend more on a full-size seat or set of back doors. If you want the maximum cargo and passenger space, consider a quad cab’s big cousin: a crew cab. Both varieties have four wheels and two rows of seats. Crew cabs offer full-sized rear seats and doors. They’re bigger than quad cabs and cost more. Getting the most from this kind of cab requires tweaks to driving practices and the truck’s other features. Making the right modifications to trucks pushes their mileage to the max. Getting better mileage offsets the higher initial and regular costs of bigger cabs. Knowing these industry terms is key to knowing what you’re getting when you buy your next truck. This finding differs from that of Reilly and Skuse (1992), who found that children with CP (15-39 months) were introduced to solid food at 4 months of age and there was no significant difference between the children with CP and a comparison group of typically-developing children. However, Reilly and Skuse (1992) did report that children with CP demonstrated more difficulty with management of solid food than children in the comparison group. Mealtime: duration, self feeding, special adaptations Although the results from this investigation suggest that mealtimes for the majority of children with oral-motor involvement last longer than the mealtimes for the majority of children with no oral-motor involvement, other research suggests that children with more severe oral-motor involvement may actually demonstrate shorter feeding times than children without or with minimal oral-motor involvement ( Reilly et al., 1996 ). Feeding evaluations should therefore, not only assess duration of mealtime for fatigue-related concerns, but also nutritional adequacy of oral intake. Assessments should also take into account the fact that delayed self-feeding skills in children with oral-motor involvement may be secondary to increased upper extremity involvement. Although the use of special equipment and adaptations was documented in 34 of the children in the current investigation, there was no significant difference between the groups in their use. One explanation for this finding may relate to the age of the children in this study. Because children were relatively young, they may not yet have been evaluated for adaptive equipment to enhance feeding. Symptoms of swallowing problems The prevalence of coughing, gagging, or choking ranged from 56-69, a finding comparable to Reilly and colleagues (1996) who reported that 71 of children with CP age 12-72 months demonstrated “frequent coughing and choking” (p. 880). In the current investigation parents were asked to rate the frequency of these symptoms and there was no difference in the frequency rating of gagging between the two groups of children with CP. However, children with oral-motor involvement had a greater average frequency of coughing and choking than children without oral-motor involvement. Evaluation and therapy As indicated in the results, children with oral-motor involvement were more likely to be enrolled in feeding therapy than children without oral-motor involvement. Only one child without oral-motor involvement was enrolled in therapy and that child's therapy was directed toward improving the child's acceptance of a larger variety of foods and not toward improving masticatory or swallow function. Of the children who did have oral-motor involvement 66 had been enrolled in feeding therapy, and although therapy was individualized to each child, and therapeutic goals were described by parents, five primary themes were identified in the current investigation 1) increase texture acceptance, 2) improve oral-motor motility (e.g., lips and tongue), 3) improve feeding ability (e.g., self-feed, use of utensils), 4) address oral sensitivity issues, and 5) improve chewing ability. Summary of Findings When children with CP were grouped based on the presence of oral-motor involvement, differences in skill level emerged. In general, both groups (i.e., children with and children without oral-motor involvement) initially presented with similar feeding difficulties (e.g., prevalence of feeding tube, difficulty with bottle feeding), but there was a divergence in feeding skill acquisition between the groups on more advanced skills. That is, not only did the children with oral-motor involvement have early feeding difficulties, but they were also introduced to solids at a later age, had more difficulty with self-feeding and demonstrated frequent coughing and choking during mealtime. Children with oral-motor involvement also had a significantly greater number of formal swallow evaluations and enrollment in feeding therapy. In contrast, the feeding problems in children without oral-motor involvement were only apparent on measures of early feeding skills and to a much lesser extent with later developing skills (when compared to the group of children with oral-motor involvement), suggesting greater resolution of early difficulties. Caregiver report vs. This method provided valuable insight into typical “everyday” feeding practices that can not easily be replicated during one session in a controlled laboratory environment. Nonetheless, because the primary data reported in this study were based on parent report, results should be viewed as the first step in a line of inquiry investigating feeding development in young children with CP. The results therefore provide much needed information which contribute to the emerging body of literature regarding early feeding skills in children with CP, an area which, according to Rogers (2004), remains largely unexplored. Conclusion Young children with CP have a range of feeding skills. In general, children without oral-motor involvement initially presented with feeding difficulties but the feeding problems appeared to resolve as the children acquired more skills (when compared to children with oral-motor involvement). In contrast, the difficulties identified early in life, for children with oral-motor involvement, appeared to persist with development. Future inquiries should utilize a longitudinal approach to investigate the development of feeding skills in a larger number of young children with varying degrees of oral-motor involvement as well as to determine if the relative resolution of early feeding problems is specific only to children without oral-motor involvement. Future work should also be aimed at quantifying the oral-motor characteristics contributing to persistent feeding problems. This line of inquiry would provide necessary information into the underlying motor control processes of feeding in individuals with CP and may provide a means to earlier identify children at risk for continual feeding disorders.
