CVT stands for continuously variable transmission, meant primarily to boost fuel economy. It’s a type of automatic gearbox that uses essentially one gear to always keep the engine at its most efficient speed. It was then that the automaker was working on the original 2003 Murano crossover, the first Nissan sold in the U.S. with a CVT. “The main impetus is CVTs really allow us to hit our fuel economy targets,” Bailo said. “We determined that this is the right technology for us.” The transmission forced the engine to rev louder and longer than you’d expect from a traditional automatic with fixed gears. The intrusion into the cabin was enough to drown out the stereo or conversation with fellow passengers. It didn’t help that the Rogue felt underpowered in these situations. On paper, it’s not. Those numbers are on par with the rest of the compact crossover segment, which includes the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, Mazda CX-5, Jeep Cherokee, Ford Escape and Chevy Equinox. But stomp on the Roque’s gas pedal and it all but ignores you and continues to drone on at its current pace. I had expected it to be aggravating when doing my research prior to test driving the rogue, and didn't notice much of a difference compared to mazdas crossover, CX5, which was reported to be zippy. My kids love how the sun roof glass extends to the back seats for a larger view above vs traditional sunroof depth. Super comfortable seats front and back and the rear seats can slide to create very abundant legroom or slide up to create more storage space in the trunk. Drives well in the Northeast snow. Great safety features like blind spot indicator lights on the side view mirrors and beeping if speed is too fast relative to the object in front or back My family and I love this crossover, best in class in my opinion before you get to the luxury crossovers like Audi, Infiniti, lexis, Mercedes, etc.Good luck with your crossover search, I highly recommend considering the Nissan Rogue!The drivers seat gets stuck in recline, it won't accelerate when its hot outside, it stops working the minute you get one fly in the air filter and you gotta change the filter every three weeks, and it drives like your grandpa's sedan even though it claims to be an SUV. What kind of SUV doesn't come with a hitch? This one. Oh, and did you know that this car is best known for transmission failure. Isn't that neat?? I can't wait til it happens to mine. Because then I can light my car on fire like it deserves. In addition to this model being a terrible excuse for a vehicle, Nissan is also just the worst. Its one of those companies where every single part for each model is different from everything else out there so they make you buy their expensive garbage that is just going to break again in two weeks. They overcharge for literally everything and I drive past four Nissan dealers to get to one that is an hour and a half away from my house just because I know they will be less rude there. The gas mileage is pretty dope though, which is where all two of my stars are coming from.Recalls were fixed. Had no mechanical issue on it so far and I'm about 80k miles in from 0. But the nissan quality of the interior def does show. The material around the steering wheel has been coming off for about 30k miles. Lots of squeaks and like everyone says the media player just glitches randomly and resets itself, but that happens to me like maybe once a month if not even less.I made this decision because I didn't want to be at the shop every few months for the wear and tear that you get with an older vehicle so I bought the Rogue brand new with only 15 miles on delivery. Shortly after owning the Rogue, it has caused me nothing but issues. Nissan should be ashamed of themselves for selling this quality of product to its customers and not buying it back, swapping me into a different Rogue or allowing me to get out of my lease early after its service history in an 18 month time frame. Always willing and able, the Rogue took the girl, the dogs, and me to work and the dog park every day, to Northern California to visit family, and to Lake Tahoe to plan our wedding. It was ever-present, always happy to be along for the trip. Memories were made in that Rogue, from getting nicked for (allegedly) speeding by the ever-vigilant California Highway Patrol to enjoying sunshine and warm ocean air with the windows dropped, panoramic roof open, the sound system bumpin', and dogs happily hanging out the windows. See all 32 photos Although the memories are nice, my favorite thing about the Rogue was how versatile it was. It was just as happy hauling five adults and their gear to the beach as it was being filled from the front seats back with boxes on a long road trip. The sliding rear seats and Divide-N-Hide cargo area really allowed the Rogue to excel at hauling duties. The former allowed us to position the rear seats right up against the fronts, making it impossible for our dogs to fall off the seats during road trips while maximizing cargo capacity. The latter was just as suited for dividing and organizing groceries as it was swallowing up boxes, suitcases, and even bikes. Talk about efficient storage solutions. A long road trip in another MT vehicle really drove this point home. I've made the 550-mile journey from SoCal to NorCal in the Rogue many times, and the Rogue never felt taxed with our usual load of two or three suitcases, two backpacks, dog beds, food, and a handful of other miscellaneous items. Over the Christmas break, I opted to take MT's long-term Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk on the same trip with the same usual load of cargo. I was surprised to find the cargo area filled from floor to ceiling, blocking my view through the back glass. It felt cramped in the Jeep -- it never felt that way in the Nissan. See all 32 photos Like any family member, the Rogue was lovable but not without its flaws. It was slow off the line, for instance, making the stoplight race to the turn lane a difficult endeavor. The Rogue's observed fuel economy was bested by our old long-term 2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i Touring (25.6 mpg observed), 2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0 (26.4 mpg), and 2013 Honda CR-V (26.5 mpg). The Rogue never felt taxed with our usual load of two or three suitcases, two backpacks, dog beds, and food. Although always mechanically sound, the panoramic sunroof started making sounds above 40 mph. The dealer was able to replicate the issue but couldn't actually fix the rattle as nothing was technically broken. There also were a few electrical gremlins hiding in the left-rear passenger door window and in the tailgate. On two or three occasions, the left-rear window would refuse to rise after being lowered, randomly coming back into action again after a period of sitting. The power-operated tailgate also went haywire, refusing to stay open and even causing damage to one of the taillights. The window and tailgate issues were addressed by replacing a control module and the battery at no cost during its 20,000-mile service. See all 32 photos Speaking of service, after accidentally missing its first, the Rogue made three scheduled stops at our local Nissan dealer for service. We've had a fair amount of family crossovers pass through our garage over the past few years, and the Rogue is on the high-end of the maintenance-cost spectrum. But would I recommend it to someone in the market for a crossover SUV. In a heartbeat. Without hesitation. I truly loved my time in the Rogue and know that it'd just as easily make itself part of someone else's family as it did mine. Also, while the Rogue’s comparatively low starting price looks attractive, most competitors offer additional standard equipment for a marginal price increase. The wheelbase has been stretched just over a half-inch, width and height have increased, and increased volume allows the option of a very snug 3rd-row seat.The 2014 Rogue is also one of the only vehicles in the segment to feature a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which enhances fuel economy. By incorporating a satisfying blend of SUV, sedan and wagon DNA, the versatile 5-passenger Nissan Rogue can accommodate a wide variety of unique uses.Acceleration is adequate in ordinary driving, but a little tepid in passing situations and on steep uphills. The Xtronic CVT has artificial steps programmed into its operation, simulating conventional transmission shifts, though there are still hints of CVT wheezing under full throttle. SUVs aren’t the kind of vehicles that inspire back-road excursions just for the fun of driving, but the 2014 Rogue acquits itself better than many when the pavement gets kinky, and also responds briskly in emergency maneuvers. New for 2014, the system provides 18 possible variations. Unfortunately, it’s limited to 5-passenger models. Front-seat legroom and headroom are good for tall drivers, and rear-seat legroom has expanded. Nissan refers to the 3rd-row perch as “occasional seating,” and it’s very tight. On the other hand, wider rear door openings improve access to the Rogue’s nether regions. Storage space is ample and includes a slick new cargo system option in 5-passenger models. The wheelbase has been lengthened by just over a half-inch, while overall length shrinks by a similar amount, reducing front and rear overhangs. Expanded width plus a taller profile gives the 2014 sportier proportions, while side panel sculpting lends a more sophisticated look. In addition to attractive styling, the 2014 Rogue also represents a significant gain in aerodynamic efficiency, with a coefficient of drag value (Cd) of 0.33 versus 0.36 for the 2013 model, contributing to a significant improvement in EPA fuel economy ratings. Standard safety equipment is comparable to most other small SUVs, but not exceptional. S models offer a Special Edition Package comprised of 16-inch alloy wheels, a mid-grade audio system and a rear backup camera.
