Actual capacity of media formats The actual capacit y of th e DVD5, DVD9, BD DL, a nd BDXL media form ats is less than as stated b y the disc m anufacturers. For example, the actu al capacity of a 4.7 GB DVD5 is arou nd 4.38 GB only. This is because of different conversion s y stems. A DVD5 -m edia format can handle 4.700.0 00.000 bytes, but this num ber is not equal to the 4.7 GB s tated by the disc m anufacturers. W h en you are compiling files, a cap acity bar shows you the estim ated si ze of the selected files and the availabl e space on the disc. T he color of the capacity bar indicates whether the data will fit on the disc or not: Green capacity bar The data will fit on th e disc. The s ize of the disc that has been inserted will determ ine whether the data will fit or not. Red capacity bar The data will not fit o n the disc. (Unless you have inserte d an oversize disc.) The yellow and red m arks are set by default for disc s that are com mercially available. T he disc type you have selecte d will determine the exact s cale value. Capacity of the CD r ecordable disc For exam ple, blank CDs are a vailable with a capacity of 650 M B (74 min) or 700 MB (80 min). T herefore, the yellow mark is set f or CDs at 650 M B and the red at 700 MB.If y ou have a CD rec order you can onl y bu rn dat a CDs. The procedure f or all data compilation m ethods is identical. The Image Record er is also suitable for creating an i mage of a disc type not supported b y the connected recorder. For exam ple, you can therefore create a DVD image without having installed a DVD recorder. You can then write the image to a disc at an y time. To create a data disc, proceed as follows: 1. S elect the desired disc format ( CD, DVD, B lu -ray ) from the drop-down m enu i n the New Compilation window. (In the case that the New Compilation window is not opened, it can be opened by click ing the New button on the main screen.) ? The selection list sho w s the com pilation types that can be burned. The New Compilation window is closed and the selection screen is displa yed.The files are added to t he compilation and disp layed in the compilation screen. T he capacity bar indicates how muc h space is required on the disc. In Nero Burning ROM, there is the option of definin g filters for individual files or folders by dragging f iles or folders into the com pilation areas with the depress ed right mouse button. It is very easy to hide f iles in data compilations for ad ditional protection or for security reasons so that t hey do not appear on the normal display. The files behave in the sam e way as other hidden s y stem files that are hidd en by default, but can easil y be displa y ed. To hide files, ri ght-click the required file, select the Properties opt ion and then select the Hid e ch eck box. Nero Burning ROM supports virtual searc h folders in the W indows Vista operating system. The searc h is selected by dragging the se arch folder into the com pilation area. If you want to sel ect the files of the search folder, you must open the search folder and drag the f iles into the compilation. 7. Repeat the previous step for all files that you want to add. ? You have successfull y compiled a data disc and can now burn this c ompilation. No special hardware is needed. Discs that are create d with Nero Burning RO M and the SecurD isc compilation t y pe include data integrity and reconstr uction. Additional SecurDisc features include the possibi li ty to protect the data on your disc against unauthori zed access with a password, to digi tally sign the disc, and to conf igure the data redundanc y. To be able to cop y the protected data to y our hard drive an d to check the security of the data you will need a specia l application nam ed Nero Secur Disc Viewer. The N ero SecurDisc Viewer is burned a utomatically to the SecurDisc d isc and can be downloaded free of charge at www.secur disc.net or www.nero.c om. More inform ation on SecurDisc technology can b e found at www.securdisc.net. To compile a SecurD isc disc, proceed as f oll ows: 1. S elect the desired disc format ( CD, DVD, Blu-ray ) from the drop-down m enu i n the New W h en appropriate, a wizard offers suggestions in an addition al Tips d ialog box when entering and s electing the pass word.If the Data redundanc y check box is disabled, the disc will be filled com pletely with copies of the chose n data and check su ms. A display panel in the com pilation screen indicates the current redundanc y level. A redundancy level of 1, 3 means no redundanc y and a redundancy level of 9 means exc ell ent redundancy. W e recommend a redundanc y level of at least 2,5. 6. Cl ick the New button. ? The New Compilation window is closed an d the selection screen is displayed. The files are added to t he com pilation and displayed in the compilation sc reen. The capacity bar indicates how much space is require d on the disc. You can selectivel y enable the pas sword protection for individua l files by marking the desired file in the com pilation screen and cl ick ing th e Protect butto n. 9. Repeat the previous step for all files that you want to add. ? You have compiled a Secur Disc disc with settings according to your requirements and can now burn th e disc. The Nero Di scSpan feature f or UDF compilations is usef ul when the data to be burned is too large to f it on a single disc. The num ber of discs to be used is shown in the com pilation screen and y ou can switch the disc type here. Ho wever, during the burn proces s you are allowed to alter nate the disc types (CD, DVD, Blu-ra y Disc) regardless of which disc type you chose at th e beginning. W h en a single file exceeds the capacity of a disc, Nero Burning ROM can split such files automatically. In addit ion, using the SmartFit feature integrated in Nero DiscSpan, Nero Burning ROM can distribute files dynam ically among severa l discs. The files are distributed in such a wa y that the am o unt of needed disc s is minimized by slightly rearran ging the order of files to optim ally use the disc space available. Note that y ou can either enable s plitting of files or enable Sm artFit. The restore tool Ne ro DiscM erge and a file catalog is burned on the last disc of the set by Nero Burning ROM. Nero DiscMerge prov ides an easy way to cop y the content of t he Nero DiscSpan discs to your com puter. Nero DiscMerge can also m erge split files and restore the original order of the f iles distributed by Sm artFit. 3.3.1 Set Nero DiscSpan Options The Nero DiscSp an tab provides configurat ion options for the Nero Disc Span feature. The following conf iguration options are available: Check box Enable Nero DiscSpan Enables the Nero Disc Span feature. The com pil ation is burned to multiple discs, if necessary. Nero DiscSpan can onl y be enabled, if on the Multisession tab the No Mult isession option button is sel ected. Note, that you need Nero DiscMerge in order to merge split files and folders. Nero DiscMerge is automaticall y burned to the last disc. Option button Al low Nero Disc Span without file splitting Enables the pure Nero D iscSpan feature (burns th e compilation to multiple discs) w ithout file spl itting and without rearranging the order of files. Note, that the file size is therefore limited by the disc s ize at least. Check box Enable SmartFit Enables the option tha t files are distributed dynam ically am ong several discs and not n ecessarily in the original order. The files are distributed in such a way that the amount of ne eded discs is minimized by slight ly rearr anging the order of f iles to optimally use the disc space avai lable. Therefore, it is possible, that files from one folder are to b e found on multiple discs. The original order of the files can be restored e asily by Nero DiscMerge. Check box Add Nero DiscM erge and file catalog to master disc Adds Nero DiscMerge t o the last disc. Nero DiscMer ge provides an easy way to cop y the content of the Nero DiscSpan discs to your computer. Nero DiscMerge ca n also merge split files and rest ore the original order of the f iles distributed by Sm artFit. Therefore, Nero DiscMerge is autom atically burned to the last disc if the A llow the splitting of files option or the Enable S martFit option is enabled. 3.3.2 Creating Multiple Discs with Nero DiscSpan W i th Nero Burning ROM you can compile and burn all types of files and folders to m ultiple discs. The num ber of discs to be used is shown in the compilatio n screen and you c an switch the disc t y pe here. In order to minim ize the amount of needed disc s, you can also split large f iles or re -arrange the order of f il es to optim ally use the disc space available. To create an UDF com pilation using the Nero Disc Span feature, proceed as follo ws: 1.
