More photos would be helpful in the steps of an illustrated dis and reassembly. I would even be willing to pay more for a better ILLUSTRATED manual. This is a problem w most manuals, so this is not a reason to not to purchase this. At least most photos are clear and well illuminated. Print quality is good, not faded or smeared. The 'BLOW UP' part identification charts are good. My ONLY other complaint would be w these manuals would be the lack of identification of type and size of nuts, bolts, screws, at least the original specs for them. Would make appropriate tool selection easier. No fun in trying find the right tool in tight or hidden spaces w unknown fasteners. Thanks for listening. Change is a slow process. Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2015 In my opinion the manual should give more options as far as oils, lubricants, parts, as long as they are the same or equal to what is recommended by the manufacture not just Harley numbers (example oil for the bike just a good quality 20w50 if that is what you are using instead of just a Harley number). I didn't think Harley was writing your books! Please try again later. From the United StatesMore photos would be helpful in the steps of an illustrated dis and reassembly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. I went to ebay and I see that Clymer has just released theirs. I've had mixed experiences. I had a Haynes for my '98 Civic, which wasn't nearly as good as factory.http://www.optus.ca/userfiles/conexant-router-manual.xml Not enough detail in some areas, since it was shared with Integras and CR-Vs. This one is Clymer, with whom I have no experience, and it is only for 08 and 09 KLRs. To those of you who have seen Clymer and factory for your bike, what is your opinion and why? If you want to give it tune ups and change the oil, Clymer is fine. If you want to rebuild the engine a few times, factory kicks ass over Clymer (assembly is reverse of disassembly). I've also found that the factory manuals ASSume you have mechanical skills. Sometimes the aftermarket ones are better for the unskilled. I use the O.E. for my 9, the Pilot, the Civic, but I have a Haynes for the Sentra. (It's a cheap car) The aftermarket manuals usually have the short cuts. The parts manual sure speeds up the parts orders and gives the exploded views. FACTORY is the only way to go. For my 07 Wee I have a Factory Manual, haven't seen or heard if there is a Clymer's manual around yet. Had the Clymer first and picked up the EOM manual when I purchased a used 96 Intruder. When I sold that Intruder to finance my move West, I kept both manuals If you want to give it tune ups and change the oil, Clymer is fine. Click to expand. One random example is a half-page about compression-test values but no mention of what pressure is acceptable for bike described by the manual. Factory manuals give more values (and more reliable values) for torques, pressures, voltages, and resistances than Clymer. And fritzcoinc is right about parts manuals; the diagrams on BikeBandit show how things go together very clearly. Click to expand. BTW, if you're shopping on ebay for manuals, check elsewhere too. The new Clymer for the KLR was over 100 more expensive on ebay than elsewhere. Apparently, the seller was under the impression no one else could get it just because amazon doesn't have them. Good for dweebs who don't know what a spark plug is. Save your money, get the real one. Good for dweebs who don't know what a spark plug is.http://www.diamondsinthemaking.com/content/bose-model-p1-manual Save your money, get the real one. Click to expand. Enough detail to take the engine apart, tips on what to watch out for, better photos. It also cost half. I've found the real life experience on bike specific forums to be better then both manuals. It did not take me long to realize that the relatively inexpensive aftermarket manuals were a better choice for me, a shade-tree mechanic, than the pricey factory manuals written for professional technicians with all the special tools and training. It baffled me that Haynes and Clymer had not made a manual for one of the most popular and longest running models, then 13 years old.I wanted one, but was not sure which to buy. Then I decided to buy both of them and do this service manual shootout, super-comparo, just for you, my faithful readers. Here is how it turned out. Haynes makes up for the missing pages by using a 3-column layout compared to the 2 columns and larger print of Clymer. The Clymer is easier to read, but in spite of the slim volume, there seems to be more content in the Haynes. I like it when I can read good things about my old motorcycle. It sells it to me all over again and helps motivate me to keep her running. Haynes also offered an exhaustive pre-ride checklist, again with color pictures. A Tools and Workshop section which also has color pictures is included at the end of the Haynes book. Haynes also had a table of contents for the chapters at the beginning of each chapter, a feature I like, but their thumb tabs had no list from which to thumb, largely defeating their purpose. Clymer did have a thumb tab listing aligned with their respective tabs. With that one minor exception, otherwise it seemed that in nearly every respect, Haynes went one step further to provide useful content and photographs. And somehow, Haynes is able to make their pictures clearer and more sharply detailed, no small feat I can assure you from experience. But let's give them another try.http://gtisupplies.com/images/canon-fax-super-g3-user-manual.pdf On the other hand, Haynes had absolutely nothing about the rear fender and grab rail assembly whereas Clymer had a good illustration and explanation. They both agree on removing the rider seat, disconnecting the negative terminal and removing the rear wheel and mud guard but after that, their approach is quite different. Haynes says remove the exhaust silencers, the left shock absorber and the swing arm. This is a huge amount of work. Otherwise, they are about the same on all the hoses, tank bolts, wiring and stuff. By the way, the Yamaha factory manual does not cover removal of the fuel tank at all. Actually, they require the less common 18 mm socket. You can find one at a Sears hardware store. Haynes merely stated to use a socket of the correct size or the one provided in the Yamaha tool kit. Their writing style is so, there is no other way to put it, British. Here is an example. Other disconcerting bits involve the spelling of the King's English -- tyres, centrestand and so forth. Contrary to popular opinion, they stated not to use 20W50 oil because it might make the clutch slip. This seemed counter-intuitive to me but I did a little research and found that higher viscosity oil makes it difficult for a wet-clutch to squeeze the oil out from between the plates and that the clutch may indeed slip. They did consult with a number of our members during the preparation of their manual and it is printed in the good old U.S.A. and is easier to read. Knock yourself out. Unlike OEM manuals, Clymer repair manuals are written specifically for the do it yourself as well as the professional and experienced mechanic. OEM manuals are often designed for a professional technician, who often has at their disposal an array of specialized tools, equipment and knowledge. This helps the writers for Clymer provide easy-to-follow instructions that allow the manual user to safely and efficiently service and repair their machine.By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. You don’t have to be a professional mechanic to get plenty of use out of this book. Whether you’re just looking for a more in-depth owner’s manual or need clear, step by step instructions on how to remove and overhaul the transmission and engine, this book has got you covered. The book is handy when the power goes out, but the digital version is better. Clymer has released an online version of the manuals for lightning fast referencing and it will never get stained by oily hands beyond readability the way a paperback will. Plenty of exploded parts diagrams, photos, and step by step instructions. Easy reference page at the end of each chapter with important information on it. Covers Harley Sportster models 2014 to 2017 when CANbus systems appeared. Includes full-color wiring schematics in the back of the manual. Explains basic maintenance all the way up to the most complex electrical troubleshooting. Provides safety tips, list of tooling needed for tasks and an Index of topics. Sportsters haven’t changed much over the years so this manual will even work on older bikes to an extent. Online manual is slick, set up for quick reference and ease of usePhotos are fairly small and mostly black and white in the book. Online manual is super easy to use and faster than the book to find what you’re after. Photos and diagrams can be saved to your portable device for reference laterClear and concise with decent, black and white photos that have helped me keep my ride in tip-top shape. There’s no appreciable advantage in using the OEM books over Clymer. I find them maybe a little clearer when it comes to photos sometimes, but that’s it. Harley brought in a CANbus electrical system in 2014 on these bikes so having a good manual is pretty crucial in DIY work as a result. I enjoy using the online version of this section much more because I can zoom in on my smartphone or tablet to get a real close look. I really appreciate that feature for times when I just want to know how tight to do up a rear axle nut for example. As I said there really isn’t anything not covered in this book but I’ve just chosen a few highlights from it to showcase. This section has terrific diagrams on how to perform electrical testing to figure it out. They let you know what type of meter to use and where to place your leads. The step by step photos is clear and easy to use even if they are in black and white. For example, they remind you to soak the clutch friction discs in transmission oil for a minimum 5 minutes before installing. Most people think they need to be soaked overnight, but that’s going overboard. I can never seem to remember how much oil something holds or what kind. That’s probably why in my Harleys I just ran Amsoil 20W50 in all three compartments. Keep it simple. I love the way torque specs are usually written in the assembly instructions too so I don’t have to go hunting around for them. Torque wrenches aren’t overrated and any time you can tighten a fastener correctly you should do it. Make sure to get your torque wrench calibrated once in a while. No problem, just print another.Click and find exactly what you want and fast. I like it a lot, but feel like maybe Clymer hasn’t gone far enough yet. Link it up with the local dealership parts department (or even eBay) so the user can check inventory, price and how far away your desired part is. It could easily be set up to order the parts at that point as well and provide tracking. It’s 2018 after all! I always end up looking on YouTube to see how to do something even after reading the Clymer manual, so let’s just make the Online Manual one-stop shopping. It makes sense. Easier than an Index and you can save diagrams and photos from the page in your phone for quick reference later. Mainly it’s used to highlight warnings that are crucial to follow in order not to damage your bike, but some photos are in color too. When it comes to the wiring diagrams this is the main reason to go digital since those little wires are tough to see along with the small print used on the ones in the back of the book. In the brake bleeding section, they mention the MityVac bleeding tool which allows a single person to bleed the brake lines but also mention how to do it with a friend without the tool. Fred Clymer’s manuals have been helping motorcyclists ever since then all over the world. Even if you have a bike from back in the 40s or 50s there’s a good chance you can get a Clymer manual for it and get your hands dirty while looking after it. Married, Father of three children. They both cost about the same. EDIT- If you read about Haynes and Clymer manuals online and the history of each. Haynes seems to be, literally, two British dudes that buy each model of motorcycle or auto and break it down and rebuild it, and document the whole process. Seems like Clymer may have them beat on photo's and details for the beginner. Also, the Clymer manual focuses on the Warrior and provides a separate manual for it, while Haynes incorporates Warrior and Banshee into one manual. I'm gonna check the local used bookstore, then order the Clymer. Also, I already have a PDF of the factory manual. It has some invaluable technical specs, but it sucks for a beginner. 7 comments share save hide report 100 Upvoted This thread is archived New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast Sort by best I have a Haynes for my CBR, I don't like it. It's a perfectly good manual, I just prefer the way they lay things out in the factory service book. Unless there is a strong preference on. Wait. Warrior 350? Fuck off quadtard! Ok - As I was saying, unless there is a strong preference expressed for one manual or the other on forums for this thing then I'd flip a coin. I have a Clymer for my truck and a Haynes as well. The info is probably the same. Good Luck! 2 share Report Save level 2 Honda Helix CN250 10 years ago I just prefer the way they lay things out in the factory service book. Sure, but that's Honda. Honda service manuals set the standard for the industry. I've read Yamaha scooter manuals, not nearly as good as Honda. FYI, I run a Honda scooter discussion forum and several members have raved about the quality of the on-line manuals at. If it's still available that is, otherwise I'd go with a Clymer. 1 share Report Save level 1 You can't handle the truth! 10 years ago Haynes manuals have a lot of errors. I had to spend an extra two days doing a valve job on my pickup truck because the Haynes manual didn't describe the procedure to disconnect the cam chain sprocket from the cam in understandable terms as to exactly why they told me to make a wooden tool to hold the cam chain. Also, Haynes manuals are based upon taking stuff apart, not putting it back together. All rights reserved Back to Top. It should be able to lead a newbie in the right direction. This is an awesome site. I've been reading posts here 'til I'm seeing them in my dreams!!! I found it to be a little short on procedures and bought the Seloc manual, much more user friendly in my opinion. Also for the procedure that I bought the book for (originally) it was wrong. I need to remove the lower unit and get at the water pump. They described the nuts to remove and did not cover the configuration I am looking at. This makes me lose confidence in the rest of the book ever being 100 right. ON THE OTHER HAND the Seloc manual is very wordy and I tend to like that as I need a lot of handholding with this type stuff. Sorry, I havent seen a Clymers outboard manual to compare it to. I have a 'real' manual on the way from Mercury (if you need the number for them, let me know, they are really hard to reach but very nice once you do) so I can compare it when it arrives. What was said above is probably true- I have a factory manual and a Clymer's manual for my Yamaha ATV. The factory manual is sparse and is probably written for mechanics who already know what they are doing. The Clymers is written for the neophyte or the shadetree mechanic at worst (which is just my speed). But maybe that's not warranted.mistakes can be in either book I guess. Explanatory text added, pictures more like 'photocopy-quality' and rather general. If you have the budget, both books on the shelf will give you 'the little extra' when you look for details. Just need to make sure you are looking at the right year horsepower model. Although I do like Clymer, Seloc has some new features that tell you how difficult a certain procedure will be. Everything is labeled so that you know if a newbie can do it or if you have to be a wrench who's been around the block. Think about it.you don't want to get half way through taking something apart and then realize that it's going to be rather tough. Best to know ahead of time what to expect. Again, I do like the Clymer's but I think Seloc has the edge most of the time. - bayman I just ordered the Seloc manual for starters, will get the factory next if I need more info after Seloc arrives. If you pay close attention to details, you will eventually move toward Clymers and Factory manuals. The Selocs are loaded with errors--some amazingly obvious-- and their pictures are often illegible. I have found several problems in the Seloc book so far, maybe because they try to cover too many models. I'll have to check the mercury factory manuals and see if they are moe accurate. The Seloc does get a little too long-winded I think, and it has been known to be VERY inaccurate. Good luck, seems like with all the different opinions we may have confused you more than anything.
