Chances are the manual transmission won’t be with us much longer. It’s a dying breed. Last year, sales of electric cars surpassed those with three pedals. But don’t have your left foot removed just yet. There are still 27 new cars available in the United States with a manual gearbox. (A handful of sport-utes come with them, too, but we covered those in a separate list.) If you're after a row-it-yourself driving experience one of these cars should do the job. Although its turbocharged engines now come from Mercedes-AMG, a manufacturer that does not offer a manual transmission, Aston does offer its gorgeous “entry-level” Vantage with a seven-speed manual. The track-ready AMR performance variant even gets an unconventional dog-leg-pattern shifter behind the sports car’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 Three-pedal driving is still alive and well at the Bayerische Motoren Werke. In the 2-Series you can specify a six-speed manual in the rear-drive 230i and M240i coupes, the M240i convertible, the M2 Competition, and the top-of-the-line M2 CS. The new 2-series Gran Coupe, however, is an automatic-only zone. Thankfully BMW has decided to keep that streak alive. Like its mechanical twin, the M4 Coupe, the high-performance sedan is also available with a six-speed manual. Two models are available, the standard 473-hp and the 503-hp M3 Competition. But the 4-Series coupes and convertibles haven’t just lost their classic good looks, they’ve also lost their third pedal. The 2021 M4 Coupe can be ordered with and a row-your-own six-speed behind its twin-turbo inline six, including the 503-hp M4 Competition. In fact, a six-speed manual is available in every variation of the rear-wheel drive muscle car, from the base 1LS with the turbo 2.0-liter all the way up to the fire-breathing ZL1 and ZL1 1LE with their supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. A six-speed manual is available with the potent turbo-four, the GT’s 5.0-liter V-8, as well as in the 480-hp Bullitt and the new Mach 1. Although the Genesis G70 shares its mechanicals with the automatic-only Kia Stinger, you can buy the Genesis with rear-wheel drive, a turbo 2.0-liter inline-four and three pedals. All-wheel-drive and V-6 models only come with an eight-speed automatic. Although the manual-only Si has also been discontinued, several versions of the compact are still available with a six-speed stick, including the Sport hatchback, which also packs the 180-hp version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Thankfully, the 305-hp Civic Type R survives and is still only offered with the six-speed. The mid-level SEL and the top Limited trim get a standard CVT automatic. It gets a standard six-speed manual with the base 2.0-liter four or the turbocharged 1.6-liter four, which packs 201 horsepower. Hyundai also offers its 275-hp Veloster N hot hatch with three pedals, although we expect most buyers to go for its impressive new wet eight-speed dual-clutch. For 2021, Kia only offers one model with a stick, the Forte sedan. A six-speed manual is available in the base FE trim level and in the turbocharged Forte GT, which is also available with a seven-speed dual-clutch. And it remains one of the only mid-engine sports cars you can buy with a stick shift. Though a six-speed automatic is available, a six-speed manual is standard and a better match for the Evora’s 3.5-liter 416-hp supercharged V-6. The Note Hatchback model is history, but the Versa sedan is still one of the most budget-friendly new cars you can buy, and you can get it with a five-speed manual. Unfortunately it’s only available on the base S trim. Higher-level models get a CVT. And each and every variation of both the Cayman coupe and Boxster convertible come with a stick. In fact, the manual is standard in all trim levels and with every powertrain, plus, the six-speed remains the only transmission offered in the hardcore Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder models. So far, so good. This year, the brand’s seven-speed manual remains a no-cost option over the eight-speed dual-clutch on the Carrera S and Carrera 4S in both coupe and convertible body styles. If you have the means, then opt for the sporty Civic Type R, which pairs a 306-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with a six-speed manual transmission. 2021 Hyundai Accent The Hyundai Accent 's six-speed manual transmission certainly allows the driver to make the most of the compact sedan's 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine's power, but it sacrifices fuel economy along the way. With EPA ratings of 29 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined, the stick-shift Accent is down 4 mpg in the city, 2 mpg on the highway, and 3 mpg combined to its CVT-equipped counterpart. That said, the base Accent is surprisingly quick for its class, and its shifter is satisfying to use. 2021 Hyundai Elantra Hyundai looks to challenge the Volkswagen Jetta GLI with its 2021 Elantra N Line. With a standard six-speed manual transmission that mates to a 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, the sportiest ( for now ) Elantra model might just convince some GLI customers to head over to their nearest Hyundai dealer. 2021 Hyundai Veloster If you're looking for a sporty Hyundai in the U.S., the funky Veloster hatchback is the way to go. A six-speed manual is available with both the 147-hp 2.0-liter and available 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines, and it's standard on the 275-hp Veloster N. 2021 Jeep Gladiator If you want a mid-size pickup with a manual transmission, then your choices are limited to the Toyota Tacoma or the Jeep Gladiator. The Jeep's six-speed gearbox pairs with its standard 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Alas, the truck's available turbo-diesel engine pairs exclusively with an automatic transmission. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Like the Gladiator, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler offers a six-speed manual with its 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine. That goes for both two- and four-door models, too. Interested in the Wrangler's 270-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, 260-hp turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6, or 375-hp gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. Then you better be cool with an automatic transmission. 2021 Kia Forte Both the Kia Forte 's standard 2.0-liter and available turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines offer a six-speed manual transmission option. The gearbox is arguably the perfect complement to the small sedan's sporty exterior styling. 2021 Kia Soul The Kia Soul's six-speed manual is limited to the least expensive LX trim. We wish Kia offered a row-it-yourself gearbox on the 201-hp Soul Turbo, however, the brand limits the most powerful variant of its small crossover SUV to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. 2021 Lotus Evora The Lotus Evora GT returns for 2021. Like last year, the mid-engined sports car's 416-hp supercharged 3.5-liter V-6 pairs with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. 2021 Mazda 3 Want a 2021 Mazda 3 with a manual transmission. Well, you better like the front-wheel-drive hatchback with the high-end Premium package, or else you're SOL. That's right, Mazda's all but abandoned the stick shift in the 3, and both the sedan body style and new 250-hp 2.5T powertrain forgo the row-it-yourself gearbox. Fortunately, the hatch's 186-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine offers just enough grunt to make its available six-speed manual transmission a worthwhile addition. 2021 Mini Hardtop and Convertible The Mini—in two-door and four-door Hardtop, as well as drop-top Convertible, forms—is an involving little driver's car, especially with its standard six-speed manual. The gearbox mates with either the Cooper trim's 134-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine or the Cooper S model's 189-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. Those in search of more oomph can opt for the 228-hp John Cooper Works trim, which offers a stick shift in two-door Hardtop form. 2021 Mini Clubman If the four-door Mini Hardtop is a tad too small for your tastes, then take a look at the larger Clubman. Sure, there's the similarly sized Countryman, but Mini's crossover lacks a key piece of hardware the Clubman keeps: A manual gearbox. The six-speed unit is exclusive to the front-wheel-drive Cooper S trim that sports a 189-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood. 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage The Mitsubishi Mirage puts on a fresh face for 2021. Under the hood, however, sits the same wheezy 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that mates to a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission. 2021 Nissan Versa While most 2021 Nissan Versa models come with a continuously variable automatic transmission, the base S trim sports a standard five-speed manual gearbox. It's likely the best way to make the most of the Versa's 122 horses. 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman There are few automatic transmissions better than Porsche's PDK dual-clutch automatic (short for Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe), but we're grateful that the automaker's pair of mid-engine sports cars still offer a manual gearbox. A six-speed manual is available on all 718 Boxster and Cayman models, including the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder. 2021 Porsche 911 The latest Porsche 911 is not the haven for the manual gearbox that its predecessors were. That said, the rear-engined sports car hasn't dumped the stick shift entirely, and Porsche offers a seven-speed unit as an option on models such as the 2021 911 Targa 4S, which boasts standard all-wheel-drive and 443 hp from its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six. 2021 Subaru Crosstrek The multitalented Subaru Crosstrek toes the line between tall hatchback and small SUV rather well; it's no surprise that multiple editors chose the Crosstrek when asked which SUV they would buy. Alas, the Crosstrek's new 182-hp 2.5-liter flat-four engine is not offered with a manual. Still, Subaru offers a six-speed stick with the standard 152-hp 2.0-liter unit. Beggars can't be choosers, right? 2021 Subaru Impreza Subaru 's CVT is one of the better-behaved variable transmissions on the market, but if shifting gears is more your speed, then the Japanese automaker will sell you an Impreza sedan or hatchback with a five-speed manual to help you make the most of the 2.0-liter flat-four's limited power. 2021 Toyota Corolla Toyota 's latest Corolla is better than ever, and thankfully, Toyota is still looking out for enthusiasts. A six-speed manual is available on various Corolla models, including the new, sporty Corolla Apex Edition, which relies on the sedan's larger 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder for motivation. Toyota appeases stick-shift fans in search of additional practicality, as it offers the row-it-yourself gearbox in the Corolla hatchback, too. 2021 Toyota Tacoma To snag a manual transmission in the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, you'll have to skip over the truck's base 159-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and instead opt for the more powerful 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6. You can't just choose any Tacoma trim with a V-6 if you want to row your own gears, though. Instead, you'll have to aim for the four-wheel-drive Tacoma TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, or TRD Pro. 2021 Volkswagen Golf Pour one out for the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf, as 2021 marks its last year in the United States. While the performance-oriented Golf GTI benefits from a redesign for 2022, the run-of-the-mill Golf and its standard six-speed manual transmission, which mates to a 147-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder, drives off to the big junkyard in the sky (at least on our shores). The 2021 Golf GTI, meanwhile, also sports a standard six-speed manual. In this model, though, the gearbox mates to a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 228 hp. 2021 Volkswagen Jetta Like its Golf counterpart, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta pairs a standard six-speed manual gearbox with a 147-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four. Looking for a little extra spice from your Jetta. Then check out the 228-hp Jetta GLI, which also comes standard with a six-speed stick. Where possible, specific trims are mentioned if they are required to unlock that car’s chamber of manual transmission secrets. Some notable omissions from our list are the Fiat 500, whose return to the Canadian market is uncertain for 2019, and the Jaguar F-Type, which sadly loses its manual transmission for the 2020 model year. In a Birdbox-style twist, the 124 uses the MX-5’s old manual gearbox but both are a pleasure to drive. Well-equipped small cars with a manual. Count us in. The 2019 Accord’s stickshift can be paired with either the 1.5L or 2.0L mills, the latter pumping out a robust 252 horsepower.Base DX, mid-level LX, and zooty Sport trims all give drivers a chance to row their own gears. Those six speeds stir a 1.5L pot making 130 horsepower while gently sipping fuel. If this Chevy were a burger, it’d be at the top of that secret list. It is indeed possible to order a 2019 Trax in Canada with a six-speed manual transmission, provided you pop for a front-wheel drive LS in white or silver. Don’t forget to ask for an extra burger patty. The latter is an intriguing proposition, as well-equipped wagons with three pedals and power going to all four wheels are a rarity these days. A six-speed manual transmission is available on all three trims, from Comfortline to Execline, the latter of which includes a vast screen for its instrument cluster called Digital Cockpit. Audi-like, indeed. The GT’s stick even includes rev-matching technology, allowing your passengers to believe that you can heel-and-toe like Fangio. If you’re looking for something that’ll bring big bucks at Barrett-Jackson in thirty years, seek out a convertible with the stick as slushbox droptops are much more common. One can even get a stick in the almighty Hellcat. Those rear tires don’t stand a chance. The M’s available with a stick as well, of course. In fact, these are likely one of the few models on our list whose manual take rate is higher than the automatic option. Good, we say. Active rev matching provides dandy aural treats in the form of burbles and pops during downshifts. Our pick? The Z06.
