There are large amounts of Greek symbols, long science-y words with absolutely no explanations or definitions, paper so thin you either rip it or get a paper cut every time you attempt to turn a page, and print so tiny you get neck cramps from bending over backwards trying to read it. I guess it’s a good thing that the print is so microscopic, though. Another discouraging aspect of Chemistry: The Central Science is the sheer amount of information, weight, mass, depth, and length it holds—which is way too much. The amount of information in this volume is multiple times more than any human being, student or not, should be required to learn in an entire lifetime; it is not physically, mentally, or emotionally possible. I feel truly sorry for those professors who paid thousands of dollars for their university education, only to have both their extreme intelligence and toiled fruits of their labor wasted on this volume, which will likely continue to cause suffering and pain to high school and college students alike. Ultimately, Chemistry: The Central Science wasted weeks of my sophomore year of high school that I will never get back (as well as undoubtedly took years off of my life), degraded my confidence both in the hellhole that is chemistry and in life itself, and did not help me to learn one inkling of chemistry all year long.Take it from someone who's read the book through and through- it's very decent. The authors try very hard to write in simple language that anyone would understand and there were even some humorous bits where certain concepts were concerned. I could've done with more sample exercises but the ones they provided were appreciated. There's quite a lot crammed into this text so I think they did the Take it from someone who's read the book through and through- it's very decent. There's quite a lot crammed into this text so I think they did the best they could with what they had to cover. Relieved I'm done with it though! All the other books didn't even have romance or suspense or drama or ANYTHING. My favorite part was when the professor related the quantum theory to letters and numbers and other black symbols signifying many more weeks of suffering through AP Chemistry. It blew my mind how close the exams were. A must-read! Five stars! It actually was the most helpful thing in the world. All the other books didn't even have romance or suspense or drama or ANYTHING. A must-read! Five stars! It actually was the most helpful thing in the world. This book is huge but probably my favorite school book ever. I'm kind of a science nerd when it comes to Biology and Chemistry. This book is huge but probably my favorite school book ever. My only criticism of the book is that it should have more practice problems after the chapter with answers in the back of the book, and that certain concepts could have been explained better, like when and what kind of setup problems required in chapter 17, (but then again ch 17 is toward the back of the book, or chem 2 for me).Nice discussion. Details are okay. I bought it, but then dropped out of the class. After four years I reenrolled and was surprised that my edition actually was still accurate and every bit a detailed as the current text. I am a Chemistry major. Would have been better if more of the homework had solutions in the back. It is also a great text book for general chemistry. It is also a great text book for general chemistry. The authors did well to describe chemical concepts, processes, etc offering in text exercises with step by step explanations which was the most valuable to me. Everything was so clearly set out, the problems were challenging but doable - with a little help and a lot of struggling - and it really, really clarified a lot of things, especially in thermo. I passedwith an A-, which surprised even me. I guess, I learned more from reading this book than listening to my Prof. Go figure. It did have it's dry parts, but it mixed in enough graphics, examples and sidebars to keep you from getting too bored. I wish the ebook version was actually a downloadable file instead of just available on the website. I want e a huge fan of the online mastering chemistry component, but good book. Chemistry is just awful. But this isn’t a review on the subject, so I’ll ignore that. This book just wasn’t very clearly written in my opinion. I’ve read much harder textbooks that were still somehow more enjoyable than this one. Not my cup of tea at all It was about as good as a chemistry text book can be. I used it for both general chem classes. It worked for the class but I didn't really enjoy reading it. It is my experience that attendance and class performance are very closely related, arrive prepared and on time each day. It requires a great deal of time to master the material covered in this course. Students who attend class regularly and work assigned problems have a much greater success rate. It is strongly suggested that you study a MINIMUM of two hours for every lecture hour. If your background is weak, you should plan on spending more time. DO NOT GET BEHIND. Help is available in the Learning Assistance Center, Departmental review and tutoring sessions, and during my office hours, please see me if you are having difficulty. Times will be announced at least one week in advance as course dictates. Extraordinary circumstances may dictate otherwise. Prerequisites: CHM 130 and CHM 130LL or one year high school chemistry and completion of intermediate Algebra or the equivalent. Unless previously taken, a student must be enrolled in a lab. Phoenix (602) 244-2678, Outside of Phoenix 1-800-308-9000. When working problems you should show as much detail as possible including writing notes to yourself and reference pages so studying at test time becomes a review and your homework notebook is your study guide. If you are using MasteringChemistry for the Laboratory, you may use the same MasteringChemistry account.Access MasteringChemistry and run the browser checkup and install the necessary plug-ins. If there is an issue loading a particular problem, try a different web browser, insure all operating system updates are installed, try a different computer (e.g. UNF library or computer lab). Red ParScore Scantron sheets will be provided and used on the exam. See the syllabus for dates of exams. The final exam time and day is available at the UNF Final Exam Schedule. Read the pertinent sections of the chapter before lecture, and work the sample exercises. Test yourself by attempting the Give It Some Thought questions. 2.) Take notes during lecture. Taking well-organized notes helps you understand the material. Taking notes by hand is likely to help develop a deeper understanding of the material and better long-term comprehension. Cramming puts things into your short term memory and if you're exhausted, it's very short term. You should study throughout the weeks before the exam, so that when the day to take the exam comes, you will feel confident of your preparation. 4.) Concepts. Learn the concepts via well-organized notes taken during lecture and reading the chapter. Make an outline of the materials you have been studying the chapter, without having the book open. How close does your chapter outline compare to the chapter summary and key terms, key skills, and key equations at the end of each chapter. Ensure you have the big picture and focus on meeting the chapter objectives. 5.) Practice. You can listen and watch someone tell you how to hit a baseball, run a marathon, or learn a second language, but without practice none are possible. Complete the MasteringChemistry exam review assignment. Work problems and answer questions, preferably new problems from the end of the chapter. Start with ones in the middle of the section, then towards the middle-end of the section if you correctly answer it. 6.) Manage Time and Get Help. Don't get stuck for too long on one problem or concept. Read the textbook, lecture notes, and try simple problems and questions first. Student Academic Success Services (SASS) has tutors to aid in understanding how to understand concepts and solve problems in preparation for the exam, not just help solve graded homework problems. Bring with you the attempted work on the end of chapter practice problems and show it to the tutor. 7.) Write a practice exam for yourself. Choose problems at the end of the chapter and take the practice exam in an exam like environment. Time it for the exam duration (e.g. 75 minutes), no open book or notes, just the equation sheet and periodic table included with the exam and the calculator that you will be using for the exam. For instance, to enter 6.02 x 10 23, push 6. 0 2 EE 23, or if the calculator has an EXP key, push 6. 0 2 EXP 23. A common error is to enter 6. 0 2 x 10 EE 23. ChemReview.net Introductory Applied Chemistry at BCIT Practice Chemistry at Widener Chemistry at Frostburg Pass chemistry tips. Please note that merely completing the problems on the practice exam is unlikely to be sufficient preparation for the final, since the practice final exam does not necessarily cover all the topics that will be covered on the final exam. The practice exam is being provided to help you test your understanding of some of the concepts in general chemistry I. The actual final exam will cover material from the textbook and content given in lectures of chapters one through nine. But scientometric co-citation analyses indicate thatA critical commentary andThis argument is supplemented by a scientometricThis alternative “framework” mapping thenBut scientometric co-citation analyses indicate that biochemistry se ems presently to be more interconnected to other sciences. On the other h and, mat hematics is considered by many to permeate all sciences and hence might compete as the choice for centrality. A critical commentary and argument leads to a proposal for an alternative partially ordered hierarchical “framewo rk” map of sciences. This argument is supplemented by a scientometric approach based on university course requirements for different curricula, so as to support our partially ordered map. This alternative “framework” mapping then is seen to indicate a special position for chemistry, as where significant branching begins. Chemistry and scientometric inter-relations In order to find an answer to the lead title question, the second question inextricably arises. Thence we here address these two questions, through an examination of several related topics: different pr oposed inter-relationships amongst the sciences, their pa rtially ordered “framework” hierarchy, the related complementarity of red uctionism and emergence, the developm ent of interdisciplinary sciences, trends in the publication of new scientific jo urnals, and points relating to the centrality of chemistry.B ut also centrality may be argued from the intuitive idea that chemistry makes the connection be tween the “hard sciences” such as physics and the “soft sciences” associated with biology and medicine. Per fect or almost p erfect reproducibility of experiments is expected in the hard sciences, whereas multiple experiments are the standard mode in the soft sciences in order to ensure a reliable statistical basis for coping with the poorer reproducibility. Note that among the common types of stronger intermolecular interactions it is primarily covalent bonding which leads to the formation of (non-extended) molecules. Mo st of the millions of substances listed in the Chemical Abstracts Database are organic molecules, but organic compounds also include m any ionic salts. Thus, considering the chemical constitution of various form s of m atter in our planet, the earth’s core (m etallic iron- nickel) and many rocks in the earth’ s mantle such as th e ionic limestone (CaCO 3 ) are not molecular compounds, but water, air, petro leum, and the b ulk of th e biomass are (although supramolecular interactio ns also intervene in biomolecules). Another abbreviated definition of chemistry by van Br akel 3 is as the “science of the transformations of substances”. But in fact often much effort ( both in teaching and in research) is just spent on describ ing and characterizing what structures occur, aside from their mode of formation a nd reaction. To address “ centrality”, the inter-relationships of o ne sort or another am ongst the different scientific fields is relevant.
