Readers will practice close reading, improve text-based vocabulary, and determine meaning through text-dependent questions. After all, we have quite a few series - and most of them are very good. Still, I'm excited about this Great Works series for a number of reasons. Easy to use and comprehensive, these combine all the elements of a good literature study - vocabulary, literary analysis, writing connections, assessments - giving you eye-pleasing, reproducible student pages and a well-constructed, thorough study. But, it's the extras that make them special. First of all, they have culminating activities (Creating with Story Elements) - ways to focus on book specifics, such as understanding the bad guy from Wrinkle in Time. For instance, in Wrinkle, mentally working through geometry dimensions. I like the cross-curricular connections. I like the variety of writing and language activities - in fact there's good variety in all of the activities. And I particularly like the progressive training in writing response to literature compositions. At the earlier levels the student is walked through the response and the writing of it. At the high school level, the student is given choices for different types of writing. These books are essentially teacher's lesson plans with accompanying reproducible activity sheets. The studies are very cohesive both internally as they work through a literature selection and sequentially as one level prepares the student for the next. Coverage includes author background, resource lists for text comparisons, book summary, theme, vocabulary, literary analysis (setting, plot, characters, devices, etc) comprehension, response to literature writing, and language learning (mainly younger levels).Study guides for the same book are often available from several publishers, so we found it more efficient to give a description of the book only once. Meanwhile, Winnie Foster, bored and cross, tells a toad that she will soon run away. That evening, a stranger in a yellow suit comes by the foster home and stops to ask some questions. As they talk, they hear music coming from the nearby wood. The next day Winnie goes walking in the wood, which is owned by her family. She comes across Jesse Tuck sitting under a large tree and drinking from a spring. When Winnie tries to drink, Jesse stops her. Then Mae and Miles appear. Alarmed at Winnie's discovery of the spring, they kidnap her. Winnie learns that the music she heard comes from Mae's music box. She also learns the Tucks' secret: the water in the spring is magic and has made them ageless. They are all exactly the same age as the day they first drank it many years ago. Despite her worry at being kidnapped, Winnie finds the Tucks kind and rather sweet. At their home, she meets Angus, the father. She's an only child who is watched all the time and has to obey lots of rules. She would like to get out and explore. She's been told it would be dangerous; she believes it would be. She's lonely; has no one else to talk to. He says it will be bad for her; there's something he doesn't want her to know. Possible answer: magic Possible answer: something about him seems sinister or unpleasant Possible answers: She doesn't trust him; isn't really afraid of the Tucks; is having an adventure at last; isn't thinking clearly. She's heard the music before; it connects her to home. The box is pretty and she doesn't think someone who owned it could be too terrible. She starts to think of the Tucks as her special friends; is no longer afraid and alone; thinks living forever is exciting. Possible answers: He plans to harm Winnie or the Tucks; he is interested in the spring. They live in a cottage with a “touch-me-not-appearance.” They don't let Winnie out to play, and aren't friendly to strangers. People aren't supposed to go in their wood. The Tucks will live forever because of the spring water. How would you have felt about it. What would you have done? What special possession do you have? They come to see her at night and tell her how much they like having her with them. He says he'll bring back Winnie if they sell him the wood. He says they're proud — “family-proud and land-proud.” He wants to use the spring to make a fortune and have power. Miles lost his wife and children; people think they are strange and shun them; they can never stay in one place. She's suddenly homesick; has never been away before. She sees how different life at the Tucks' house is from her own home. It's always moving on, changing. They're not living, growing, or changing; they are just there. If others find the spring and drink from it, their lives will be frozen in time also. She's upset at the thought of death. He is kind and so truly wretched at their fate and the dangers to others. The bullfrog foreshadows trouble ahead. It makes the reader notice him and understand that he is different. Is it a place you would like to be? How did you feel? Would you agree to drink the water. Should Winnie? She now thinks of the Tucks as her friends and doesn't want them to get in trouble. She takes Mae's place in the jail so the constable won't know Mae has gone right away. Children come by to see her and are impressed. They used to think she was too prissy. He's jealous. The man is near death. When she doesn't die, everyone will know the secret. Probably relieved — they won't have to sell their wood. She knows it's important, but she doesn't want to deceive her family again. She thinks of it as hers because she's seen it often before. She doesn't want it to die. He knows she didn't drink the spring water. He believes she made the right choice. She won't drink it herself, nor live forever, nor marry Jesse. It's mentioned in the description of their home. The Tucks find Winnie's grave and see the toad that, like them, will never die. Alternatively, two dimensional (2D) 1 H NMR is an appealing solution in order to obtain a better resolution of the lipid signals, as it allows to split the signal in two dimensions. These experiments are difficult to apply to lipidomics, as they involve long experiments (several hours), and absolute quantification requires calibration procedures. Relative quantification was performed in this study, but they showed the potential of fast multidimensional NMR experiment for lipids quantification since the analysis duration is low (26 min) and the peaks are well-resolved. Contrary to MS, the detailed characterization of lipid species by proton NMR spectroscopy is unfeasible as many protons in FA with similar chemical environment give largely overlapped resonances and the quantity of material to acquire an accurate spectrum is 100 times higher than what is needed for mass spectrometry analysis. 1 H NMR has some drawbacks such as low sensitivity, signal overlapping and discrimination of resonances. However, 1 H NMR spectra of the lipids in biological matrices provide a fast overview of the major lipid classes (fatty acids, glycerolipids, phospholipids and sterols), and its spectral linearity avoids the use of multiple internal standards for quantitative estimation. 31 P NMR is a powerful technique for the quantification of phospholipid classes. Normal phase high-performance liquid chromatography (NP-HPLC) and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) are usually used for the separation of lipid classes, whereas reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) is used for the separation of lipid molecular species. When analyzing lipids by liquid chromatography (LC), lipid detection is usually performed by several techniques. As lipids do not usually present exploitable chromophores, they are rarely detected by classic methods like ultraviolet (UV).
