It is very design oriented, easy to read and does not contain long derivations of anything - the stuff we antenna designers would skip anyway. In my opinion, only relevant information for practical design work is included in the book, no more to confuse you or make your reading experience tedious. That is why I like it. I have used that book a lot and found it exceptionally useful. We found it easy to understand even for non-antenna types. It's crammed with useful info on materials properties, and even though it is not specifically about microwave packaging it has a lot of good microwave stuff in it! Microwave Tubes by A.S. Gilmour was published in 1986, so it isn't really new, but it is one of the best written microwave books we have come across. It includes some great microwave history, including tidbits about the Varian brothers, Kompfner, Pierce, Boot and Randall. It also describes the math behind why 50 ohms was chosen way back when. Chapter 13 discusses microwave bipolar silicon transistors, while Chapter 14 gives an introduction to the theory of MESFET devices. Part Two is concluded with Chapter 15 on GaAs FET manufacture, with a brief discussion of high electron mobility transistors (HEMT). Part Three covers selected topics in opto-electronics and infrared components. Optical fibres are discussed in Chapter 16, then Chapter 17 presents solid state devices for microwave opto-electronics, covering sources (LED, solid state lasers), direct and external modulation, integrated optics and solidstate photodetectors. Chapter 18 discusses infrared passive sensor arrays for IR imaging. Part Four, entitled 'Analytical Methods', introduces the reader to the basics of passive theory and devices in Chapter 19, including scattering matrix techniques, waveguides, microstrips and propagation at interfaces between different media. Chapter 20 gives the reader an overview of microwave simulation software used in computer-aided system design. The sampling of topics included in this first volume gives an impression of the diversity of technology and discrete devices which are used in modern microwave systems design. It is hoped that the richness of the technology will strike the reader's fancy, and that the collection of all of these topics between the covers of this book will help to inspire further specialized study, benefiting from the orientation of a broader knowledge of neighbouring subjects. Volume 2 begins with Part One, entitled 'Functions for Microwave Circuits', presenting a variety of circuits and devices which supply signal functions for microwave circuit design, starting with ferrite phase shifters (Chapter 1) and p-i-n diode phase shifters (Chapter 2), mixers and preamplifiers (Chapter 3), and microwave oscillators (Chapter 4). Discussions on microwave frequency dividers (Chapter 5), multipliers (Chapter 6), and synthesizers (Chapter 7) including piezoelectricity, round off Part Five. Preface xix Part Two covers microwave hybrid and microwave integrated circuits including microwave amplifiers (Chapter 8), low noise microwave amplifiers (Chapter 9), and monolithic microwave integrated circuits (Chapter 10). Volume 2 concludes with the basics of microwave propagation (Chapter 11) and antennas (Chapter I2). Volumes I and 2 thus cover all of the basic elements necessary to design microwaves systems and applications, which form the subject matter of Volume 3. Volume 3 unlike the first two volumes, is not divided into parts, as each chapter covers quite thoroughly and at some length a general type of system or application. Chapter I covers radio and television transmitters, and Chapter 2 covers all types of terrestrial and tropospheric microwave links commonly used in telecommunications applications. Satellite links, including both telecommunications and satellite broadcast applications are covered in Chapter 3. The chapter (4) on radar and detection covers the field from its rudimentary basic theory up to state-of-the-art techniques of multidimensional, multifunction radars and with a discussion of relevant parameters concerning signal processing.
