If you opt to paint by hand rather than spraying, you can jump into the project for short periods of time that better fit in with your schedule. Don't forget to relax and play your favorite playlist while you paint. You see the areas that need fixing. As long as you aren't rushing the painting project, you should take time to address these issues. That's where professional painters come into the picture. The scale of exterior painting often tips do-it-yourselfers in the direction of hiring professionals, plus:This helps the job go even quicker. With pros, expect completion dates within days, not months. Professional painters own all of the needed painting tools. Some of these tools—high-velocity paint sprayers, extension ladders, and often scaffolding—are costly for homeowners to buy or rent. Professional painters will produce quality work. Just make sure that you've checked their previous work before hiring them. Houses that are being painted for an upcoming sale need to appeal to the greatest number of potential buyers. Neutral colors and colors that fit in with the neighborhood work best for this.?Buy paint samples in minimum 1-quart sizes and apply this paint to at least two sides of your house in order to see the colors in different lights. But if it is rainy outside and the surface is dry, you can probably paint your house. When the relative humidity (RH) level reaches 50 percent, you are pushing into an uncomfortable range and the paint will dry slower. Temperature: Temperature affects the paint curing process. Direct sun on the surface can cause the paint to cure in unattractive waves and ripples. On the other hand, temperatures below 34 F to 37 F mean that the paint simply will not dry. Time of Day and Season: The best time for exterior painting is between late morning (after the dew has evaporated) and mid-afternoon (early enough to allow the paint to dry before temperatures drop).http://tenekedjieva.com/uploads/cas-c1-2001a-manual.xml Summer makes exterior painting comfortable, but shoulder seasons like late spring and early fall tend to have less pronounced temperature spikes. That's because the vast majority of costs are devoted to two materials—paint and primer—and those materials are easy to determine with a paint calculator.Spraying uses more paint than rolling or brushing. When spraying, expect to use about 1 gallon per 150-200 square feet.Expect a professionally painted home exterior to be at least three times more expensive than a do-it-yourself job.Instead, take the time to properly fill those holes and cracks with putty or filler. If you are painting by yourself, one mental trick is to think of each side of the house as a separate project. Broken into smaller projects, this large project will feel less daunting. Flat paint sheen makes exterior painting go faster than satin sheen because paint flashing, a dullness created from one row to the next, is no issue. On the other hand, flat sheen does make cleaning siding more difficult. On a rough map of the house, note every hole and crack in the siding that will need to be repaired, along with items that will need to be removed, such as gutters, drain pipes, screens, vent flaps, and house numbers.Use a laser measuring device to measure wall distances and heights, multiplying the two to produce area measurements. Subtract the windows and doors.Window and door trim, if they will be a different color, should be a separate measurement. Purchase 10 more paint to account for wastage. If you have obstructions that are too difficult to remove or which might damage the house when removed, wrap them with plastic sheeting and secure with painter's tape. This is the time to replace broken siding, fix split or decayed window trim, replace deteriorated corner trim pieces, change out broken foundation masonry, and more. Use paint scrapers in a range of sizes and a heat gun. Place a drop cloth directly below the area and gently push into the flaking area.http://eco-region31.ru/bosch-random-orbit-sander-manual Keep pushing until the paint resists, pull off the remaining section of paint, and discard. If dealing with lead-based paint, take appropriate safety measures. Most professionals, though, use a pressure washer. Set the spray to its widest. Begin at the top and slowly work your way downward in horizontal rows. Let the caulk cure for over two hours or as recommended on the product packaging. Fill nail or screw holes with wood putty or wood filler. Apply primer to patched areas. One person uses the paint sprayer to lay down a coat of paint on the house, as the other person follows behind with the paint roller. Never dip the roller in the paint. Instead, start with a dry roller cover and pick up paint that has been laid down by the sprayer. Known as back-rolling, this technique is used by professional painters to produce a coat with both the smoothness of rolling and the speed of spraying.Use your brushes to apply the trim. You could tape the borders with special painter’s tape for clean lines. Also, remove the outlet and light switch covers beforehand. Save yourself some time by getting self-priming paint instead. If your walls are light in the first place, then you can get away with two coats of good-quality regular paint. With an angled brush or a sponge tool, paint a two-inch swath around the edges you have taped off earlier. Then, fill in the central unpainted space using a paint tray and a roller in overlapping W- or M-shaped strokes for the best paint distribution. Let the first coat dry at least a couple of hours before coating again. To make sure your leftover paint lasts, seal the can tightly by placing a paper towel over the lid and tapping the lid edges with a hammer. Have a moist rag handy to wipe fresh splatters. Scrape off dried drips with a credit card or plastic spatula. Do not forget to remove the masking tape, make sure to pull it off at an angle to avoid tearing the finish. A subsidiary of REA Group Ltd. Humidity means drips and slow drying, so avoid painting on a rainy day. If you must paint when it’s humid, take your time — and take advantage of slow-drying paint to correct your errors before moving on to the next coat. But don’t overwork, or it will show when you’re finished.fitaki.com/files/files/canon-350d-manual-guide.pdf Any cracked, flaking, or peeling areas need to be lightly sanded or scraped (and then thoroughly rinsed) before applying new primer and paint, because the weight of the new coat will pull the old paint loose. “You’ll just end up wasting your time and money if you don’t tackle that first,” says Tom Lee, Senior VP of Consumer Marketing for Behr. Greasy spots may also need a bit of washing with soap, followed by a rinse with clean water. Otherwise, give the walls a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth so that paint will have a clean, dust-free surface to stick to. If you’re splurging on great paint, you definitely don’t want to pinch pennies on the application. Good brushes and roller covers give excellent coverage so that you don’t waste time and paint on re-application, and high-end painter’s tape is the real deal when it comes to sealing out drips and blurs. But if you go too thick, you might actually create texture where you don’t want it, so be prepared to give your salesperson details about what you’re painting. You will never regret the time you spend covering floors, furniture, and hardware before you begin a paint project. Drop cloths are a must, and small plastic sandwich bags secured with tape are an easy way to protect doorknobs. If you’re impatient, you’ll be tempted to skip this five-minute step, but don’t. Then, instead of using one gallon at a time, combine all the paint into one large container and mix it thoroughly. This is known as “boxing” your paint, and it keeps your color consistent from beginning to end. We'll explain it all. Today’s premium paints flow on easily, and you’ve already chosen a good roller cover (right?), so there’s no need to use much pressure. Be sure to use an extension pole so you can reach the maximum amount of area with the least effort — and without straining your back. After you’ve cut in your edges at the ceiling and baseboard using a brush, use your roller to apply paint from the ceiling downward.http://www.jimenez-casquet.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1629c6f005af2a---cpt-code-for-manual-reduction-of-umbilical-hernia.pdf Amateurs often have telltale drips and spatters at the end of a paint job, but pros paint right over their mistakes as they work their way down the wall. Once an area starts to dry, it’s best to leave it alone. Going back over it can leave marks and color streaks in the paint’s surface. Learn these basic painting tips to ensure the project goes smoothly and looks great. TIP: Work your way from top to bottom of house in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by 8 inches. Each one has a different spray, from the high-pressure pinpoint spray to a wider, low-pressure spray. Siding can be cleaned with a low-pressure spray tip. Pressure-washing is also useful for removing algae stains from fencing. Apply epoxy filler to cracks or holes using spackle knife. Once dry, lightly sand using medium-grit sanding block. After all, it’s pretty painless, relatively inexpensive, and should something go horribly wrong, easy to fix. But before you grab your roller and get started, it’s important to have a plan of attack. Read on to learn how to paint a room and see the steps you’ll need to follow to make sure your project is a success. 1. Plan your approach Start by thinking about how you want the finished project to look and remember that you’re not limited to four walls in the same color. Consider painting an accent wall in a bold hue or highlighting moldings in a contrasting shade or finish. And don’t forget to look up and see whether the ceiling could use a refresh as well.Start by figuring out the general color characteristics: Do you want a warm or cool shade. A neutral or a saturated shade. If you have existing furniture or art, you’ll also want to consider how the shade will compliment them. Once you have a sense of what you’re looking for, pick a few shades and get samples. Test the shades to see how they look in the room at different times of day.www.csnjl.com/userfiles/files/canon-350d-manual-focus.pdf Many paint companies also have tools on their websites that will let you upload a photo of your space and preview different colors on the walls. But colors can look different in real-world conditions, so you’ll still need to try it out in the space. Test samples of your color choices in the room to see how they look in different lighting conditions. You’ll likely need additional paint when going from dark to light. She recommends applying a gray tinted primer to the surface before you paint your walls a saturated color to help reduce the number of applications. When it comes to finish, you may have heard the glossier it is, the higher the coverage rate, but it’s not enough of a difference to change the number of gallons you need to buy, says Minchew. Cabinets with complicated millwork require more paint, too; Minchew suggests purchasing about 10 percent more than calculated. Calculate the correct amount of paint you'll need to spare yourself trips back to the store and wasted paint. If you don't have enough space, push everything to the center. If you dare (or have an artist's steady hand), you can skip taping entirely. Remove outlet and light switch covers and apply painters tape to protect outlets and switches from paint drips. Protect floors and furniture with drop cloths. If you’re using more than one gallon of paint, combine the cans in a large bucket in case there is a slight variation in color. Mix your paint early and often. Work from the top of the room down, starting with the ceilings. Planning a bold focal wall. If you're covering up dark walls with a brighter hue, plan on three coats: your primer, plus two coats of the new color to ensure nothing shows through. Advertisement Tackle one wall at a time. When applying paint with the roller, use long strokes in a W pattern for ample coverage (and to avoid those pesky roller marks). Once the wall is dry to the touch, it's ready for a second coat. If you are painting the trim, remove the painter’s tape and wait for the walls to dry, before applying tape to the walls. Start with the trim closest to the ceiling, moving on to door and window frames, and finally the baseboards. Start by cutting in near moldings and corners with a brush. Remove all painters tape and gather drop clothes, making sure any spills or splatters are dry before you move them. For latex- and water-based paints, clean brushes with soap and water, while oil-based paints will require mineral spirits. You can use a painter’s brush to clean and reshape bristles. If you want to reuse roller covers, use the curved edge of a 5-in-1 tool to remove the paint under running water. Clean brushes with soap and water if you used latex- or water-based paints. Give yourself enough time The amount of time your project will take depends on the size of your room, how you’re painting, and your skill level. For instance, using a dark shade on the walls and painting the ceiling and trim will take longer than just doing the walls in a neutral. While some spaces can be done in a few hours, others may take several days. Be sure to budget more time than you think the job will need and don’t forget to take prep and cleanup into account. Obviously, pros have more experience than the average homeowner, but they also know techniques and tricks that make them better painters. They shared how professionals paint rooms to help you work more efficiently and get better results. Some of what you'll read may surprise you. For instance, their secrets won't cut painting time. That's how long it takes to prep, prime and paint correctly. It's more work, but when you stand back to admire the results, you'll agree it's time well spent. Buy high-quality drop cloths, such as canvas or paper-backed plastic. A note that, paint soaks right through lightweight fabrics and bedsheets. Plastic sheeting works, but it's very slippery and doesn't absorb drips. Smooth any repairs, bumps, and nibs with a drywall pole sander. For smoother walls and better adhesion, some of our pros sand all previously painted walls regardless of the shape they're in. For glossy trim, use a sanding sponge rather than sandpaper. Sponges mold to the shape of the trim and last longer than paper. Wash the walls with trisodium phosphate (TSP) or a mild cleaner, like Jasco's TSP No-Rinse Substitute.Load up your rag or sponge from your cleaning-solution bucket, and scrub. Before redipping, rinse the sponge in a second bucket filled with clean water. The secret to using caulk is to cut the tip smaller than you think it should be; too much caulk makes a mess. Also, instead of using a nail to break the inner seal, use a small wire so you don't stretch out the nozzle. Also consider buying a dripless caulk gun, which will automatically back off the pressure after each pull on the trigger to prevent unwanted oozing. To prevent bleeding, Span uses a putty knife to bed the tape. After letting the paint dry, he scores the edge of the tape line with a utility knife to avoid tearing the paint. The pros also agreed that using two coats of paint will result in the best-looking job. Don't skimp on the coverage; if you're covering more than 400 square feet per gallon, you're spreading it too thin.Because leftover mold spores can live beneath the paint and eventually work their way through to the surface, you should also prep bath and kitchen surfaces. To use a bucket and grid, dip the roller a quarter of the way into the paint and run it over the ramp to work the paint into the nap. And there's no need to stand directly underneath the area you are painting, so you won't catch every wayward splatter. A pole is also great for walls and floors. The pros were split over whether the 4- or 8-foot pole is best for everyday use, but they all agreed that a telescoping rod is the best bet. When choosing a brush, pay attention to the bristles. Synthetic brushes are made of nylon or polyester, or a combination of the two. Poly bristles are stiffer, which makes them good for exterior or textured work, but for fine interior work, Doherty uses softer nylon brushes. Brushes are available in 1- to 4-inch widths. The angled brush makes it easier to cut to a line and puts more bristles on the work than a square-tipped brush. When cutting in on a wall, he loads his brush and spreads out the excess paint, then works the brush up to the line between wall and ceiling. Use a light to check the surface for drips, roller flecks, or other imperfections. Paint the lower half of the outer sash first, then the entire inner sash. When the grain changes abruptly, for instance, where the rail meets the stile, don't stop your brush stroke — you'll only leave a lump of paint.Roller covers are almost impossible to clean thoroughly. Most pros buy new covers for each job. To mimic the look of a roller, simply dab on the paint.
