The interface for entering waypoints is a little confusing, and difficult to find under the various settings menus. A USB data cable is not included, for downloading additional waypoints from CDs that the manufacturer sells at an additional charge. And sometimes the operating system is sluggish to respond to commands to move around the mapping pages (this may just be a graphics drawing delay, yet still noticeable). Memory is small so only load the maps you need. It's fairly easy to use, with a little practice. I'm middle-aged; I imagine kids can operate it perfectly well right out of the womb. I bought the 129 dollar TOPO 24K map on DVD. The eTrex apparently only holds one county map at a time without the extra memory thing-a-ma-jig, not included. Still, one county is enough for me. Newer products have more features, better looking maps, but the performance is still about the same as this Venture HC first offered new thirteen years ago. I use these products for training people in wilderness navigation. Personally, I use them for my own canoe trips in Northern Minnesota and Canada. They are well made, reliable, reasonably easy on batteries, and quite durable. On this GPS, the Garmin Venture HC, there is built in USB connectivity for computers, a nice color screen, a base map, and built in geocaching features. I would have given it 5 stars if only you could store the description and hints for Geocaches as well, but other than that I think this GPS rocks so far. Especially with the amount of water exposure it has. We gps stand up jet skis, so this does get exposed to water directly routinely.I began geocaching several months ago and had been using my Nuvi 350 I wanted a unit that was more durable, with an excellent satellite receiver, but economical. Therefore, I ordered a Garmin eTrex Venture HC, just to use for caching. (It would probably also work well for hiking, etc.; I've only used it for geocaching.) This is the current basic eTrex model that has the new receiver (H), color screen (C), USB connection, but no card slot (x). I really can't think of any cons. I was afraid the screen might be too small on this smaller-size unit, but it's big enough and not a problem at all. I wish it had a setting to automatically turn the backlight on each time, but it's very easy to turn it on so that's no problem. After parking, I use the eTrex to find the cache and haven't needed maps for that. I haven't loaded any extra maps (I don't do wilderness caching) or used any of the 24 MB of internal memory. Forums have indicated that this is enough space for loading a good many topo maps, but not for many driving navigation maps. For me, the Nuvi 350 and Venture HC make a great combo to cover all bases better than a single unit would. One of the friends that I often cache with has the more expensive 60CSx, and our units usually give almost identical information. I know there are technical differences, but the eTrex performs very well in comparison. This is the Venture HC, not the older eTrex Venture model. I think those are the major differences in the newest eTrex models, they basically work the same and have the same receiver. Garmin's website lets you compare features on different models, and you can read the manuals there. If you need a great unit for caching, consider the Venture HC.I upgraded the Venture HC because I wanted to be able to use topographical maps, which is something the Venture HC is advertised to be able to do (reference the picture). They can't. Well they can, but they can't. Let me explain. The unit is advertised as having 25 MB of internal memory, however only about 23MB is useable at any time. That's about enough for 1 topographical map section at a time, in my case Central Florida, with the exception of the East coast took about 18.2MB, and with a trail overlay that took about 900KB, there was no more room. Granted, if you're using this for hiking and backpacking like me you're not likely to walk from the center of the map off of it, BUT you don't get to pick the center of the map, and if the trail you're planning to use crosses 2 map sections, you're screwed. So, you should really look at the Garmin HCx, which has a micro SD card slot allowing you to expand the memory. Problem solved. Not! There's another problem here: this unit can draw the (useless) basemap pretty quickly, but add a topo map with any level of detail and it takes it ages to draw the map. Not a problem you're thinking. Think about it like this: say you're on the trail and would like to find a stream near you to filter some water from. You can either zoom way out or move the map pointer to your north, south, east and west. In either case, every zoom step or every map pan will result in a 10-20 second redraw of the map. So if you zoom out 2 levels, then pan in all the cardinal directions, you could spend a minute or more just waiting on the map to draw. And finally, a note about the maps. You CAN use non-Garmin maps with this product. Without some sort of add on map, this thing is no more useful than my 10 year old Geko 101, which you can buy for nothing these days. As for my unit, I returned it the day after I received it and ordered the GPSMap 60CSx. Faster map drawing times, INCLUDED 64MB SD card (mine came with a 1GB, but the product listing said 64MB.) and a much better interface. All for not much more than the HCx.I highly recommend this unit. Big Bang for the Buck.
