Definitely recommend Fodor's book when traveling overseas.So helpful before and during our vacation, it really made our trip special, it’s so hard to know where to go but the descriptions and rankings saved time and brain space for other important things, like deciding whether to start with a spritz or a local vino. SPIAGGIA DI FORNILLO As if there weren’t enough outstanding qualities in the Amalfi Coast, Positano’s Spiaggia di Fornillo is adored for its outstanding crystal clear waters. Three times a year, devotees focus on an old vial supposedly containing the blood of the saint and protectorate of Naples. An emotionally charged procession around the city leads into the Duomo, where the crowd implores the miracle of liquefaction: liquefazione symbolizes respite from the ever-looming disasters of famine, plague, revolt, earthquake, eruption, or defeat of the city’s beloved soccer team, SSC Napoli. PIO MONTE DELLA MISERICORDIA, NAPLES Down the quiet end of dark, narrow, sticky, and slightly unnerving via dei Tribunali is this charitable body with an adjoining octagonal church. In 1601, seven wealthy men established an almshouse and Pio Monte della Misericordia charity for Naples’s poor and destitute. Head through the arched loggia to the church bathed in natural light and gawk at one of Caravaggio’s most powerful and brooding masterpieces, The Seven Acts of Mercy (1607) altarpiece.ue opulence. SAN GIUSEPPE DEI RUFFI, NAPLES Designed by Baroque master architect Lazzari, this 17th-century church in the Centro Storico is worth seeking out for its over-the-top splendor and unique Messa (Mass). Devotees and the curious rise early to witness the Sacramentine nuns in white and red habits process under the impressive cupola adorned with Francesco de Mura’s dreamlike painting Paradise and the sweet sounds of the nuns singing early morning mass, reverberating around the cavernous space. Set the alarm early, as Mass begins daily at 8 am sharp. SANTA CHIARA, NAPLES One of the most photographed and much-loved expressions of life-affirming Neapolitan gioia di vivere (joy in life) can be enjoyed at this 14th-century church complex built by the Angevins. Take time out and stroll around the adjoining cloisters. The vibrant majolica-tiled columns and seats depicting fruits of the fertile Campania soil and rural landscapes are perfect for quiet reflection after the hustle of Spaccanapoli. SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA, POSITANO The instantly recognizable dome and its cute cupola above can be seen all over the pastel-hued Positano, from the famous beach to the farthest scalinatella stairway high up on Path of the Gods. Inside, the 18th-century stucco work may be a tad dull and underwhelming, but deep in the crypts, the recently excavated remains of the original 13th-century church, funerary seating, and Roman villa frescoes are breathtaking. DUOMO DI SANT’ANDREA, AMALFI Originally conceived and erected in the 9th century, this prime piece of Arab-Norman extravagance was financed by Amalfi’s once-mighty maritime trading republic that sailed east, so Byzantine influences abound. It’s been changed and embellished many times since with a number of styles from Romanesque to Gothic, so there’s much detail to get lost in here. Beyond the richly decorated facade and bronze doors, take time to linger in the Chiostro del Paradiso’s lush palm-fringed gardens enclosed by interlaced Arabic arches. DUOMO DI RAVELLO, RAVELLO Up in lofty and lovely Ravello, leave the melee of coaches and day-trippers through a tunnel that leads to a more relaxed piazza. Eyes are drawn to the fresh, simple white-gleaming Romanesque cathedral with its 13th-century campanile. Beyond the rare and rather hefty bronze door (made in 1179 and apparently one of Italy’s finest), the calming and sparse aesthetic continues inside this light-filled space. Within the cool stone walls, it’s an intimate and refreshingly understated affair. Take time to examine the vibrantly decorated ambos with twisting columns sitting on lion pedestals. SANTA MARIA A CETRELLA, CAPRI Reaching this humbly rough-hewn church founded in the 14th century takes a bit of work, but it is well worth the pilgrimage. You’ll be rewarded with a place made for some quiet reflection amid the flowery meadows (there’s a hermitage here), and it’s a fine spot to have a picnic, with lovely views down to the Faraglioni rocks. 10 Sublime Strolls and Hikes PATH OF THE GODS, AMALFI COAST, NAPLES High up the limestone cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, centuries-old trails and mule tracks provide some of the most spectacular hiking in Europe. The classic Sentiero degli Dei route links the hilltop towns of Agerola to Nocelle, and is best tackled westward for the most awesome views. LUNGOMARE DI NAPOLI, NAPLES For the ultimate gelato-slurping Neapolitan family passeggiata, head to this scenic waterfront promenade, lined with restaurants and many an ornate statue and attraction en route. Its present form took shape after a cholera outbreak in 1884, when the nascent Italian state enacted Il Risanamento (urban renewal), sweeping away old fishing communities and slums, and reclaiming land from the sea. Up until 2012, this sweep of coastline was spoiled by a roaring klaxon-cacophony of traffic, then Mayor Luigi de Magistris created the lungomare liberato (a waterfront freed of traffic). VESUVIUS NATIONAL PARK, ERCOLANO, VESUVIUS In addition to the short walk up to the crater rim of Vesuvius from the official car park, there are 11 trails within the Parco Nazionale di Vesuvio. Those after an epic trek should opt for Trail 4 through the Tirone Alto Forestry Nature Reserve established in 1974. On this seven-mile, six-hour hike, you can spot rare orchids and abundant wildlife including snakes, hares, foxes, lizards, and cuckoos. Between the trees there are views of the bay, up to the Gran Cono and toward the lava flows of 1944. HERCULANEUM, ERCOLANO Most people head straight to Pompeii to dig deeper into the history of the infamous AD 79 eruption, but this compact Roman resort is easier to get around and has riches aplenty. So far, only six insulae (blocks) have been excavated, but there’s plenty to see within a manageable walking distance. MONTE SOLARO, CAPRI For the most tranquil and spellbinding hilltop atmosphere and views around the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno, this is the must-do Caprese excursion. To save the calf and thigh muscles take the serene chair-funicular ride from Anacapri up to the 589-meter terrace. Riding up in a single chairs, dangling over the small gardens and vegetable plots, is an ethereal experience. There’s a cafe at the top and you can wander amid the macchia mediterranea scrub to gain different vantage points. Then you can either bound back down the path to Anacapri, take another dusty trail to the Cetrella church, or take the easy chairlift descent. MONTE EPOMEO, ISCHIA Ischia’s 2,600-foot mountain is an extinct volcano with some otherworldly rock formations pitted with volcanic bubbles. The effort of taking the 45-minute walk from the charming piazza and church at Serrara, through Fontana and dusty woods, can be justly rewarded with a visit to the terrace restaurant La Grotta del Fiore on the summit. The unusual 15th-century church and hermitage Chiesa di San Nicola is worth a look too. On a clear day there are azure vistas over the Golfo di Napoli and to the distant smoking volcano of Stromboli. PAESTUM Visitors to mainland Italy’s most important Greek ruins have the chance to walk in the footsteps of former resident Pythagoras and thousands of Grand Tourists. Amid the extensive grounds, enlivened in spring by butterflies fluttering around poppies and other wildflowers, there’s ample space to escape the crowds; so after wandering between the Greek temples and Roman macellum (market), find a spot to sit and savor a picnic while contemplating the most captivating views. Along these decumani Neapolitan daily life is played out for all to see. Just go with the intoxicating flow—leave your valuables in a hotel safe and keep an open mind to fully explore. Although these long streets start up the hill of the Spanish Quarter most visitors begin by the baroque obelisk Guglia dell’Immacolata. On the way you pass chic shops, along flower-fringed lanes and colonnaded gardens with many a lucertola (lizard) and gatto (cat) for company.
