Connect a size C A daptaplug TM to the adapt er’s cab le wi th the tip set to positive then insert the Adaptaplug into the PWR DC 9V jack. For best results we recommend RadioShack rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) 1500mAh batteries. T o do this, use the scanner un til B appears. Then fully cha rge the rechargeable bat teries. USING A C POWER Y ou can power the scanner using a 9 V, 300-mA AC adapter (RadioShack Cat. No. 273- 1767) and a size C Adaptaplug (neither supplied). USING VEHICL E BA TTER Y POWER Y ou can power the scanne r from a vehicle’s 12V power source (such as cigaret te-li ghter socket) using a 9V, 300-mA DC adapter and a si ze C A daptaplug (neither supplied). Both are available at your local RadioShack store. Cautions: ! Y ou must use a power source that supplies regulated 9V DC and delivers at l east 300 mA. When you finish, disconnect the adapter f rom the power sou rce before you disco nnect it from the scanner. Next, insert the Ad a ptaplug into the scanner’s PWR DC 9V jack. Plug the other end of the DC adapter into your veh ic le’s cigarette-lighter socket. Note: If you use a cigarette-lighter power cable and your vehicle’s engine is running, you might hear elec trical noise from the engine while scanning. This is normal. CONNEC TING A N ANTENNA T o attach the supplied flexible antenna to the antenna jack on top of your scanner, align the slots around the antenna’s connector with the tabs on the antenna jack. Press the antenna down over the jack and turn the antenna’ s base clockwise until it locks in to place. Y our local RadioShack store sells a variety of antennas. Always use 50 Ohm coaxial cable, such as RG-58 or RG-8, to c onnect an outdoor antenna. For lengths over 50 feet, use RG -8 low-loss dielectric coaxial cable. If the antenna ca bl e’s connector does not have a BNC connector, you will also need a BNC adapter (not supplied, available at your local RadioShack store). Follow the installation inst ructions supplied with the antenna, rou te the an tenna cable to the scanner, then connect it to the antenna jack. W arning: Use extreme caution when you installing or removing an outdoor anten na. If the antenna starts to f all, let it go. If the antenna touches a power line, contact with the antenna, mast, cable, or guy wires can c ause electrocution and death. Call the po wer company to remove the antenna. DO NOT attempt to do so yourself. This automatically disconnects the internal speaker. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. This can create a traffic hazrd a nd can be illegal in some areas. Even though some e arphones and headphones let you hear som e outside sounds when you listen at normal levels, the y still can present a traf fic hazard. CONNECTING AN EXTENSION SPEAKER In a noisy area, an am plified extension speaker (not supplied) available at your l ocal RadioShack store, might provide more com fortable listening. Note: Y ou must use an amplified speaker with this scanner. Non- ampli fied speakers do not provide sufficient volume for comfortable listening. USING THE BEL T CLIP Y ou can use the belt clip at tached to the back of the scanner for hands-f ree carrying when you are on the go. Slide the belt clip over your belt or waistband. A BOUT YOUR SCA NNER Once you understand a fe w simple terms used in t his manual and familiarize yourself with your scanner’s fea tures, you can put the scanner to work for you. Y ou simply determine the type of comm unications you want to receive, then set the scanner to s can them. A frequency is the re ceiving signal location (exp ressed in k Hz or MHz).
