There are a couple of excellent books that cover photography, several that long lists of places to stay, eat, play, etc, and a few on the natural and human history of the island. Although perhaps not quite as deep, this book covers all of these very well, and stands out with fine photography and excellent choices for prime experiences. For photographers, I would recommend You will need to get a good map of MDI. The map that comes with the AMC guide is paper, but is also available printed on Tyvek. It's primarily a trail map. This map I used both extensively and recommend getting both. But as a way to prepare for your trip to MDI, this book covers prime experiences in all areas and ranks as the best. Get more specific books as your interests dictate. The author then takes the reader on a tour, first of Acadia National Park, then of the various towns on Mount Desert Island, and finally, of the surrounding smaller islands, all worth a visit. The narrative is clear and easy to read, and there is lots of good detail on hiking, kayaking and other outdoor recreation. The many photographs provide a good sense of the Park and its unique mix of mountains and seashore. Very highly recommended.Loved all the photos. Photos make it great for the kids to look through also, and when one especially catches their attention they are likely to read to find out more. The book has info on everything from geology, history, willdlife and odd facts to biiking, hiking, restaraunts, and boat trips. Knowing a little about the history makes visiting any place more interesting. It helped me to better plan to make the most of my family's week there, The maps will definitly be used while there. Some other reiewers complained about it lacking lodging info, but I think most people use the internet for that anyways. It's always hard to plan a trip with a large group.http://www.wings.lv/userfiles/c-5-galaxy-loading-manual.xml But we read the book beforehand, bookmarked things that sounded interesting, and made advance reservations for a few things so that all six of us would be sure to get a spot. His recommendations for things to do and see, places to eat, etc, were excellent, and all the phone numbers were correct, a big plus. He has recommendations for everyone from hard core hiking enthusiasts to nature nuts to beach bums. I especially liked the fact that he included specific recommendations for things to do on many parts of the island, not just Bar Harbor. We stayed in Southwest Harbor and enjoyed his many recommendations for things to do less than a ten-minute drive away. His section in the middle of the book about island history and wildlife also made for very interesting reading. This trip to Acadia was the best vacation I've had in a long, long time, thanks in large part to how helpful this guidebook was. Many helpful tips to help you plan out your day considering the season and the heavy traffic that comes during the summer months. Information on restaurants, just all sorts of things that will give you a better idea of the many, many things there are to see and do in Acadia. What a gorgeous place to visit. My only complaint is not being able to stay longer. I would love to move into a little place in Bass Harbor. I'm so glad I bought this book prior to the trip. Everything about the book is helpful and the photos capture the beauty I witnessed first-hand. Thanks for the tip on Thurman's. Best lobster I ever had.Because I happened to fall in love with this park, I thought I should have the most inspired guide. I read this book before the trip, on the trip, and I keep returning to it after, because it is written with a heart and helps me recall wonderful days I spent there. It covers most places on the island including photographs for almost each location or history article. Most popular trails with maps are also included. We were there at the beginning of May. The National Park was closed for the majority of April. Secondly, the towns around the park are for the most part, dead until mid May. Areas and other small towns were hardly worth looking at and quite dismal with the odd party store here and there. Bar Harbor was more active and an attractive place, but again in early May, only a few restaurants were open. The island, Arcadia and the coastline are beautiful indeed. If you go strictly for hiking, this book is excellent. I left quite underwhelmed by the area as a whole.I love EVERYTHING about this book. The layout is perfect. So much useful information in an easy to follow format, (and nice sized print). And the pictures are just stunning. I was thrilled to find some of my original ideas on the list. I can't wait for my trip and would definitely buy another James Kaiser's travel guides. The information is comprehensive, easy to understand and organized in a way that makes sense and is easy to find when you need it. The book includes so many helpful tips, and the author’s recommendations for everything from hiking spots, bike rentals, kayak tours, restaurants, etc.Awesome! Will definitely pick up other books by this author when visiting other locations.Having read from cover to cover prior to our trip I felt way more informed from the moment we arrived on Mount Desert Island. The only thing that I think could have made the book better is if it explained the Island Explorer in more detail. We were fortunate to run in to some other hikers who had been there for two weeks already and figured the free transit system out. You can practically get anywhere on the island if you know which route to take and which stops to get off to catch a different route.https://www.naturapreserved.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628b3654d13a4---canon-powershot-a710-manual-download.pdfHelped out with all the good places to hike and the skill set needed to hike them. Recommended excellent restaurants and other sites to see. Very accurate and a great tool. We found some documentation at Acadia as well, but this was a quick reference and a good read. If you haven't been here, I highly recommend going between June and early September. Worth it.Desert Island! Desert Island and Acadia National Park. I have been vacationing there for over 30 years and have learned A TON from this guidebook that I didn't know about. The information given here would still be an amazing deal at twice the price. Very highly recommended! It is comprehensive for a first-time visitor. We followed the Penobscot Mountain suggested hike and we agree that it is one of the best in the park. This book gives you the best jumping point, much more than anything online that can be overwhelming and a link-rabbit-hole. We bought his Grand Canyon book, too. Wish there were one for each National Park!It was a wonderful guide for our trip, and added so much to our experience. I highly recommend if anyone is planning to make this trip. Acadia Geology Acadia’s geology was shaped by colliding continents, erupting volcanoes, scouring glaciers and countless other splendid catastrophes. Acadia Overview Two-thirds of the way up the craggy coast of Maine lies Mount Desert Island, home to granite mountains, picture-perfect harbors, and Acadia National Park.https://inclinedigital.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628b365a345ea---Canon-powershot-a700-user-manual.pdf Mount Desert Island is the crown jewel of coastal New England—the only place on the East Coast where the mountains literally meet the sea. Those mountains, rounded and smoothed by Ice Age glaciers, form one of the most distinctive profiles in the world. From the sea they look like a string of giant ice cream scoops rising up out of the water. Cadillac Mountain, the island’s tallest peak, is 1,530 feet—the highest point on the U.S. east coast. Nestled between the island’s 24 mountain peaks are forests, lakes, meadows, marshes and the only fjard on the East Coast: Somes Sound, which nearly cuts the island in two. Roughly half of Mount Desert Island has been set aside as Acadia National Park. Acadia National Park At just 46,000 acres, Acadia is one of the smallest national parks in America. But it’s also one of the most popular, luring roughly 3 million visitors a year. Acadia’s most famous attraction is the Park Loop Road, which runs along the island’s rugged eastern shore before cutting through the forest, passing by two pristine lakes, then twisting and turning to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Acadia also boasts 125 miles of stunning hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads perfect for biking or horseback riding. In addition to land on Mount Desert Island, the park also includes Schoodic Peninsula on the mainland, and half of Isle au Haut, a remote, rugged island 14 miles southwest of Mount Desert Island. About half a dozen coastal villages dot the shores of Mount Desert Island—some, like Bar Harbor, built around tourism; others, like Bass Harbor, carrying on as quiet fishing hamlets, much as they always have. There are also wealthy summer towns like Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor, and historic villages like Somesville, the island’s oldest town. Several offshore islands are also accessible by ferry, making them great for day tripping. In the days before Columbus, Mount Desert Island was the seasonal home of the Wabanaki Indians.https://moniimpex.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628b3669341cc---canon-powershot-a85-instruction-manual.pdf Hardy coastal settlers arrived in the late 1700s, followed by artists and tourists several decades later. By the late 1800s, the island was one of the most exclusive summer resorts in America, but by the 1930s the glamour of the island had started to fade. In 1947 a massive fire burned down many of the island’s once-grand mansions. Following the fire, the island rebuilt and reestablished itself as a major tourist mecca. Today it attracts a diverse mix of summer visitors—outdoor junkies, fanny-packed retirees, college students, hippies and billionaires—proving there’s something for everyone here. Physically beautiful, ecologically diverse, and culturally unique, Mount Desert Island is one of the most fascinating islands in the world. Plan the Perfect Trip to Acadia. Something is poisonous if you eat it, and if you are eating snakes then you definitely are not on the same type of vacation this guy is trying to sell. Anyway, the guidebook is fairly informative and has nice pictures throughout. I just thought it was funny. If you are choosing between this and a few other guides, this may not be the best, but if its what you have it was written in 2010 and should be fairly up to date!!
