We have plenty of very knowledgable members so if you have any questions about your Land Rover or just want to connect with other Landy owners, you're in the right place. I'll soon be trading in my old Citroen Berlingo 1.9D Forte for a used Freelander 2.0 TD4 HSE (in the hope I can actually get up the hill to my house this winter). I've narrowed down 2 potential vehicles so far. One is an auto with 41,000 miles. The other is a manual, 1 year younger, but with 52,000 miles on the clock. I actually prefer the colour of the auto (black with cream leather as opposed to silver with black leather on the manual) but I'm wary of the fact 'it's an auto'. Any feedback on the autos vs manuals. Last auto I drove was a J reg (92) RR Vogue SE. When climbing hills it seemed to not know which gear it should settle in. Have they improved since then. I don't want to be sliding all over trying to get up a bit of snow. That's already happened enough over the last 2 winters. LOL Many thanks for your help with my first purchase of a Freelander. Which car out of the 2 would you purchase and why? Chris I can drive a manual, but since having the Auto I'd be very tempted to stick with Land Rover auto's. I'm looking at getting an L322 and they only use the Auto Box so looks like I'll be using an auto for years to come. Only time I'd consider an auto is if I lived in a city but if I lived in a city, I doubt I'd be driving a landy.Gear changing is pretty stiff - Ive bled the clutch twice and now making plans to change the master cylinder. Interested in Chromiumuk's comment that changing the master cylinder is a nightmare job, lookes fairly easy to me, maybe im missing something. Didnt realise the Freelanders DMF was a problem!I had this stiff gear change problem and also had a whistle symptom which was caused by a worn clutch release bearing. IIRC, the clutch release bearing is partly constructed with plastic and tends to melt under heavy clutch operation. If you have a manual TD4, you need to be able to master the clutch very well while off road else it won't take long to do some expensive damage. In my case, it cost over ?600. Still, I wouldn't drive an auto.I had an auto 300TDi Disco before, the Freelander is sooo much nicer. Being electronic rather than hydraulic, it is much better in the way it responds to driver input, like changing down as one slows, or needs to accelerate to overtake. It also holds low gear or even changes to a lower gear when going down hill, a trad hydraulic box just disconnects so you end up freewheeling. No clutch to wear out, no dual mass flywheel to go wrong. Dont forget you can always go steptronic mode when you need that total driver control for more difficult connditions. The manuals can overheat the clutch when towing or off road. Having said that, both manual and auto Freelander drivers say there's is good.Click to expand. The refined diesel engine offers an effortless drive with more power and better fuel economy than its predecessor, none of which is compromised by the smooth auto transmission. An impressive combination - but, at ?32,330, it should be. Looking for off-road thrills. Then Land Rover's Freelander 2 really takes some beating. However, if your daily commute is more about tarmac than trailblazing, you might like to opt for this - the all-new, diesel-powered automatic version, which aims to combine mud-plugging promise with on-road refinement and driveability. The addition of the six-speed self-shifter to the oil-burner's options list has been a long time coming, given that the revamped Freelander was launched in December last year. It's set to be a big part of the range, however, with 40 per cent of UK buyers expected to choose it for their cars. The good news is that the coupling of auto box and derv power has been well worth the wait, not least because the system has a CommandShift feature for manual sequential gearchanges. This adds smooth, effortless driving, as well as refined cruising, to the diesel's current list of attributes.https://formations.fondationmironroyer.com/en/node/8638 Delivering peak torque of 400Nm at 2,000rpm, the newcomer also has 43 per cent more power than its predecessor. It's very good to drive, too, with pleasantly weighted steering and an excellent ride. Under hard acceleration, power delivery is smooth and seamless. There's none of the usual frustrations of jerky ratio changes, while throttle response is very sharp. What's more, the engine is quiet; with very little noise entering the cabin, comfortable seats and an elevated driving position, you can cover a considerable number of miles before you really start to feel the strain behind the wheel. It's not cramped inside, either, and although the boot space seems modest, it's actually 38 per cent larger than the outgoing model. Capacity has risen from 546 to 755 litres with the rear seats in place. The company's impressive Terrain Response system - which switches between traction modes - is also standard in all but the entry-level model. There's a useful Hill Descent Control system, too. Prices start at ?22,330 for the basic S trim level, which includes ?1,370 for the optional automatic transmission box. However, the flagship HSE, seen here, is ?32,330. The self-shifter might be the automatic choice, but at this price, the range-topper is too expensive. All rights reserved. The auto will be better for pitching up, in heavy traffic and generally wil give a relaxed tow without any bother of clutch wear etc. Howver the auto Freelander is not very good on mpg even solo. I have seen figures of less than 30mpg solo, and low 20s when towing. If mpg is a consideration then the manual might be more suitable.https://www.acnovate.com/images/brookstone-phantom-ii-manual.pdf As with any 4x4 and Auto mpg will be low, however I was getting around the 28mpg solo and that is in heavy rush hour city traffic. My friend who does a similar journey to me is getting abut 36mpg but he drives like its a Sunday every day. Slow and steady, slow and steady.!!!! (He'll kill me for that, but wouldn't argue!!!) After a great deal of invstegation of tow cars in my price range this was the towcar i went for. On this model it has the BMW engine fitted as standard also a larger flywheel. The freelander is small as 4x4 go and there are a few problems for towers such as rear door cannot be opened fully when caravan is attached. If you are going to use the car as a comute car this could burn a hole in you pocket 28mpg. But on saying that I just did Worthing West Sussex to Kingston upon thames there and back. Started with full tank and filled back up on return from kingston cost was There are lots of documented failures in different cars fitted with this (japaneese) autobox. Therefore manual is my advice. I can say that the 6 speed box is absolutely superb and I would recommend it. What I hadn't realised, at the time, was that when any trailer is recognised by plugging in the electrics the turn indicators are part of the standard display, parking sensors are disabled, the lower gears stay in longer ( a bit like sport mode), and the ABS is balanced for towing. I also like the manual shift operation which is very slick. Bill Cheers Other Clive Started towing with only a few hundred miles on the clock and kept well within the max.3,000 rpm maximum and got 28 - 32 all the time on the computer. Also driving fairly steadily getting 34 - 38 solo. Went on a 70 mile journey recently only to be phoned and told it had been delayed. Using the manual gears and not exceeding 55 mph I got 46.9 mpg on the computer. Expecting these figures to fall under normal driving. Bill I would expect them to improve a bit as the engine losens up over the next few K miles.https://www.medicalart.com.tr/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628a552d4ed6a---canon-ir2016j-service-manual.pdf Cheers Other Clive Pulls lovelly and no probems with the auto at all. We all suspect that the published figures for miles per gallon are somewhat optimistic, but the fuel efficiency of the auto FL2 seems way out. Reset it today for a 100mile cruise up M3, trip showed 35MPG.Where am I going wrong? Too good to be true?? Great car, but my current mpg readout must be the same currently. It has a reasonable amount of punch in 3rd gear especially, and I know I could drive it much more economically if I wanted to. I guess it doesn't bother me so much as to drive it sedately! Its atributes are decent offroad ability. Owners of V6 petrol Freelanders may have a right to moan about 18 mpg and ability to consume gearboxes but 30 mpg out of any offroad 'brick shaped' 4x4 is acceptable. Edited by budrover on Friday 7th January 13:39 I'm perfectly content getting 34ish. Its atributes are decent offroad ability.Edited by budrover on Friday 7th January 13:39 When people are being told to expect towards 30 from the new RR TDV8 4.4ltr, 29mpg after 600 miles of relaxed mixed driving from a 2.2 FL2 is not good enough. Country lane driving anything from 34-37mpg. Mike Country lane driving anything from 34-37mpg. Mike I'm impressed by your frugality. Regular diesel? Or is that a life time (or a long distance trip not reset) average.Mike I'm impressed by your frugality. Regular diesel? Thanks. Yes it was just regular diesel. Both times we've done the trip it was for a holiday so I was in no rush. But it must be said driving round Normandy doesn't involve many queues and the roads are excellent. I just keep it steady on the motorway, no unnecessary acceleration, anticipate well for overtaking etc and you can easily make a few mpg. I sound like a grandad! Mike.accofire.com/ckfinder/userfiles/files/bosch-maxx-wfl-2000-washing-machine-manual.pdf That soon changed, to the point where I decided that if I were to buy once of these cars for myself, I would unhesitatingly choose the automatic version. This option costs ?1370, and it's worth every last groat of that sum. It's not that the standard manual is itself an inferior unit - in fact, in SUV terms it's pretty good - but the six-speed auto is outstandingly better. Why? Because the changes are so quick, and so smooth, and require so little effort even if you select the CommandShift mode for manual sequential selection. The lightest pressure forwards or backwards on the lever gives you the next gear up or down respectively with such slickness that you're already there before you've taken your hand away, and even if you're pushing the accelerator pedal into the carpet at the time you hear the drop in engine revs more than you feel the ratio-swapping.One strange aspect of this - not what you'd expect from an automatic - is that the TD4 actually feels much more sporty than it does in manual form. With the manual, you might unconsciously decide to change down just one gear for a corner when two would be more suitable, and burble round gently. In the automatic, you change down twice, with minimal effort, and come out of the corner more quickly, with the engine more solidly in its useful power band.Actually, Land Rover claims that the automatic is slightly quicker than the manual, at least in terms of 0-62mph times (11.2 seconds versus 11.7). If that's true - and I have no reason to doubt it - then the much faster gearchange is clearly overcoming the automatic's inevitable lack of efficiency. The auto has a slower top speed, by 5mph, but I don't think anyone is going to be especially concerned about that.My only slight gripe about the auto is that the kickdown function still operates when you're in CommandShift, so you might find yourself changing down a gear by mistake in the event of zealous right-foot action. Apart from that, no complaints at all.http://intechsol.kz/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628a553b7f7f3---Canon-ir2020-user-manual.pdfIt may seem odd to be describing the Freelander in sporty terms, but in the right conditions you can actually have quite a lot of fun with the car. There's a fair bit of body lean through corners, but generally the handling is very impressive for an SUV.But you may not be interested in driving a Freelander quickly. Okay. In other driving environments it's equally impressive. Fine ride quality and noise levels which (as with all current Land Rover products other than the Defender) are very well suppressed mean that this is also a remarkably refined cruiser. As well as the extra ?1370 on the list price, then, running costs will also be higher. But I still think it's worth it.Update your preferences at any time. I am suspicious that the auto is not pulling as well as the manual did and it changes down on hills that the previous one would sail up in top. Is this to be expected given the different (higher) gearing on an auto. I once had a diesel auto Frontera and often felt that the gearbox was changing down too easily but I had nothing to compare it with. Not noticed any problems (but we live in a hilly area) and its done 91000.(we bought it at 78000). Not noticed any problems (but we live in a hilly area) and its done 91000.(we bought it at 78000). Does it feel the same when you do the gears manually? So it will be difficult to match a stickshift in most conitions. In comparison to similar models produced by other manufacturers in the same period of time like the Honda CRV or the Toyota RAV4, however, the first generation Freelander was far more competent off-road. It would be my first port of call. Gary Stand by for a silly question does it have its own dip stick to check the level? I would suggest you take it to a Land Rover specialist (not dealer) or someone who understands the Jatco transmission fully. A full fluid change would be my suggestion and whilst it doesn't actually do a full change, would certainly benefit your gearbox. Filling it and checking levels is not for the faint hearted, it is a specialist job unless you really know what you are doing. Because it has lots of great things to commend it, not least the fact that it's one of the few 4x4s that actually walks the walk when it comes to off-road performance - it's an incredibly capable car. Beyond this, though, it also offers first-rate levels of comfort, agility, visibility and more. Take, for example, its performance. Although all Freelanders share the same engine (a 2.2L diesel), there are several models to choose from, including a front-wheel drive model and an automatic, and all deliver an impressively smooth performance throughout the rev range. Even the eco-tuned eD4 doesn't lose performance, giving the same torque and power figures as the TD4. The ride's good, too - soft and comfortable without too much of the roll and sway that often comes with 4x4s. As to space, the Freelander feels big inside. And the reason for this is simple - it's because it is big inside. There's plenty of room to stretch out in the front, and three people easily fit in the back seats. Storage is good, too, with large door bins and other useful cubby holes for bits'n'pieces. Does the Freelander have faults. Yes, of course it does. But none that most people would want to climb out of the pram about. Perhaps one of the most common complaints is that its design is now looking a trifle long in the tooth, but this is a small price to pay for all the advantages it gives.
