The shoulder belt cannot do its job. In a crash, you could go into it, receiving neck or other injuries. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. Pull the head restraint up to raise it. That could cause injury to the person sitting there. Always push and pull on the seatbacks to be sure they are locked. It also describes some things not to do with safety belts. CAUTION: Do not let anyone ride where a safety belt cannot be worn properly. Put someone on it. Take the simplest vehicle. Suppose it is just a seat on wheels. 1-11. The rider does not stop. 1-12 The person keeps going until stopped by something. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield. With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That is why safety belts make such good sense. 1-13. You could be — whether you are wearing a safety belt or not. Your body could move too far forward increasing the chance of head and neck injury. The belt is twisted across the body. 1-22 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces.The following instructions explain how to wear a lap-shoulder belt properly. 1. Adjust the seat, if the seat is adjustable, so you can sit up straight. To see how, see “Seats” in the Index. 2. It may be necessary to pull stitching on the safety belt through the latch plate to fully tighten the lap belt on smaller occupants. 1-24 To unlatch the belt, push the button on the buckle. The belt should return to its stowed position. Although the safety belt pretensioners cannot be seen, they are part of the safety belt assembly. They can help tighten the safety belts during the early stages of a moderate to severe frontal or near frontal crash if the threshold conditions for pretensioner activation are met. Never hold an infant or a child while riding in a vehicle. Either will have a single attachment (B) to secure the top tether to the anchor. Some child restraints that have a top tether are designed for use with or without the top tether being attached. Others require the top tether always to be attached. In order to get to the anchors you will need to pull the strap at the center of the seat where the seat cushion meets the seatback. In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed. Install a LATCH-type child restraint properly using the anchors, or use the vehicle’s safety belts to secure the restraint, following the instructions that. Buckle any unused safety belts behind the child restraint so children cannot reach them. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out of the retractor to set the lock, if your vehicle has one, after the child restraint has been installed. If the position you are using does not have a headrest or head restraint and you are using a dual tether, route the tether over the seatback. The passenger sensing system works with sensors that are part of the right front passenger seat.If this happens, use the following steps to allow the system to detect that person and enable the right front passenger frontal airbag:. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job. A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash. To help make sure your restraint systems are working properly after a crash, have them inspected and any necessary replacements made as soon as. To unlock the doors, press the other side of the switch. Delayed Locking This feature delays the locking of the doors and the liftgate when using the power lock or the remote keyless entry system. You can program this feature through the Driver Information Center (DIC), or by the following method. See DIC Vehicle Customization on page 3-51. Programmable Locking Feature Following are the two locking modes that can be programmed:. Mode 2: All doors unlock when the transmission is shifted into (P) Park. Mode 3: All doors unlock when the key is removed from the ignition. You can lock the rear doors so they cannot be opened from the inside by passengers. To use one of these locks do the following: 1. Open one of the rear doors.It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the liftgate open or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the liftgate or liftglass:. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather. Content Theft-Deterrent Your vehicle is equipped with a content theft-deterrent alarm system. Here is how to operate the system: 1. PASS-Key III is a passive theft-deterrent system. The system is automatically armed when the key is removed from the ignition. You do not have to manually arm or disarm the system. When less power is required, such as cruising at a constant vehicle speed, the system will operate in the half cylinder mode, allowing the vehicle to achieve better fuel economy. Then press the shift lever button and move the shift lever into another gear. D (Drive) can be used when towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, driving on steep hills, or for off-road driving. You may want to shift the transmission to 3 (Third) or, if necessary, a lower gear selection if the transmission shifts too often. To release the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down. Pull the parking brake lever up until you can press in the button at the end of the lever. The vehicle can roll. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. Do not park over papers, leaves, dry grass, or other things that can burn. Engine Exhaust CAUTION: Engine exhaust contains Carbon Monoxide (CO) which cannot be seen or smelled. The vehicle must have a working electrical system, including adequate battery power, for the OnStar equipment to operate. There are other problems OnStar cannot control that may prevent OnStar from providing OnStar service at any particular time or place. This system provides a way to replace up to three remote control transmitters used to activate devices such as garage door openers, security systems, and home automation devices. Otherwise, the device will time out and the procedure will have to be repeated. This may not be long enough for Universal Home Remote to pick up the signal during programming. Notice: Loading cargo on the luggage carrier that weighs more than 200 lbs (91 kg) or hangs over the rear or sides of the vehicle can damage the vehicle. Load cargo so that it rests on the slats as far forward as possible and against the side rails, making sure to fasten it securely. To install the cargo cover, do the following: 1. Align the endcap with the pocket in the trim panel located behind the rear seat. 2. The tie-downs can be used to secure small loads. The headlamp washers are located under the headlamps.Setting Cruise Control CAUTION: If you leave your cruise control on when you are. This disengages the cruise control. But it does not need to be reset.When the brakes are applied this disengages the cruise control.To turn the tone off, turn the knob all the way counterclockwise.This is normal. There is a delay in the transition between the daytime and nighttime operation of the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) and the automatic headlamp systems, so that driving under bridges or bright overhead street lights does not affect the system. To turn on the dome lamps, turn the knob completely clockwise as far as it will go. The dome lamps stay on until they are turned off. Dome Lamps The dome lamps automatically come on when a door is opened, unless the dome lamp override button is. If the dome override is off, these lights will stay on for a short period of time and then will go out. Reading Lamps Press the indented part of the lenses on the reading lamps located in the overhead console to turn them. This helps to keep the battery from running down.Use the steps below to place the entire system in automatic mode: 1. Press AUTO. When AUTO is selected, the air conditioning and air inlet are automatically controlled. The air delivery modes will appear on the display as it is being adjusted. This is normal. (Recirculation): Press to turn the recirculation mode on or off. An indicator light comes on to show that recirculation is on. The rear control only turns on if the front control is on and not in defrost mode. Climate Controls Personalization The vehicle has a Driver Information Center (DIC). Climate control settings can be stored and recalled for temperature, air delivery mode and fan speed for two different drivers. You will know how fast you are going, about how much fuel you have used, and many other things you will need to know to drive safely and economically. The odometer shows how far the vehicle has been driven, in either miles (used in the United States) or kilometers (used in Canada). The odometer mileage can be checked without the vehicle running. If the light stays on it indicates there is an electrical problem. The system check includes the airbag sensor, the pretensioners, the airbag modules, the wiring and the crash sensing and diagnostic module. See Passenger Sensing System on page 1-59 for important safety information. The rearview mirror has a passenger airbag status indicator. United States Canada When the vehicle is started, the passenger airbag status indicator will light ON and OFF, or the symbol for on and off, for several seconds as a system check. As engine speeds are increased, this condition should correct itself as higher engine speeds allow the charging system to create maximum power. You can only drive for a short time with the reading in either warning zone. If the system is working normally the indicator light then goes off. Being aware of the light can prevent more serious damage to the vehicle. This system assists the service technician in correctly diagnosing any malfunction. Notice: If the vehicle is continually driven with this light on, after a while, the emission controls might not work as well, the vehicle’s fuel economy might not be as good, and the engine might not. Diagnosis and service might be required. See Filling the Tank on page 5-8. Failure to pass this inspection could prevent getting a vehicle registration.CAUTION: Do not keep driving if the oil pressure is low. Someone could be burned. The vehicle can be driven at a reduced speed when the reduced engine power light is on, but acceleration and speed may be reduced. The performance may be reduced until the next time you drive your vehicle. The service all-wheel drive light comes on to indicate that there may be a problem with the drive system and service is required. An arrow on the fuel gage indicates the side of the vehicle the fuel door is on. Here are four things that some owners ask about.The DIC buttons are located on the center of the instrument panel, above the radio.These buttons are fuel information, trip information, customization, and select. The button functions are detailed in the following pages. Odometer: Press the trip information button until ODOMETER appears on the display. This mode shows the total distance the vehicle has been driven in either miles or kilometers. Time will continue to be counted as long as the ignition is on, even if another display is being shown on the DIC. The timer will record up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds (99:59:59), after which the display will roll back to zero. See Scheduled Maintenance on page 6-4 and Engine Oil on page 5-18 for more information. Also see Engine Oil Life System on page 5-22 for information on how to reset the message. See Engine Overheating on page 5-34 for the proper course of action. This message clears when the coolant temperature drops to a safe operating temperature. FRONT FOG LAMPS OFF This message displays if the fog lamps are turned off. If a low oil pressure warning appears on the Driver Information Center (DIC), stop the vehicle as soon as possible. Do not drive the vehicle until the cause of the low oil pressure is corrected. SERVICE CHARGING SYS (System) This message displays if there is a problem with the battery charging system. Under certain conditions, the charging system light may also turn on in the instrument panel cluster. The StabiliTrak button is located on the transmission shift handle.All of the customizable options listed may not be available on your vehicle. Only the options available display on the Driver Information Center (DIC). To select your preference for automatic unlocking, press while UNLOCK DOORS: IN PARK is displayed on the DIC. Pressing the following settings: UNLOCK DOORS: IN PARK (default): All of the doors will unlock when the vehicle is shifted into P (Park). To select your preference for the feedback you will receive when unlocking the vehicle with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, press while UNLOCK FEEDBACK: LAMPS is displayed on the DIC. Pressing will scroll through the following settings: UNLOCK FEEDBACK: LAMPS (default): The parking. To select your preference for perimeter lighting, press while PERIMETER LIGHTS: ON is displayed on the DIC. Pressing will scroll through the following settings: PERIMETER LIGHTS: ON (default): The headlamps and back-up lamps will come on for 40 seconds, if it is dark enough outside, when you unlock the vehicle with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. To select your preference for recall of the driver’s memory seat and adjustable pedals, if your vehicle has this feature, press RECALL: OFF is displayed on the DIC. Pressing will scroll through the following settings: SEAT RECALL: OFF (default): The driver’s memory seat and adjustable pedals position you saved will only. To select your preference for display language, press while LANGUAGE: ENGLISH is displayed on the DIC. Pressing will scroll through the following settings: ENGLISH (default): All messages will appear in English. FRANCAIS: All messages will appear in French. CAUTION: Taking your eyes off the road for extended periods could cause a crash resulting in injury or death to you or others. Do not give extended attention to entertainment tasks while driving. XM Satellite Radio has a wide variety of programming and commercial-free music, coast-to-coast, and in digital-quality sound. During your trial or when you subscribe, you will get unlimited access to XM Radio Online for when you are not in the vehicle. SEEK: Press and release to go to the previous or the next station and stay there. The radio only seeks stations with a strong signal that are in the selected band. To program stations: 1. Turn the radio on. 2. Press BAND to select FM1, FM2, AM, or XM1 or XM2. To adjust the fade between the front and the rear speakers, push and release until FADE displays. LOC (Locked): Displays when the THEFTLOCK system has activated.Insert the CD partway into the slot, label side up. The player pulls the CD in.Handle them carefully. Store CD-R(s) in their original cases or other protective cases and away from direct sunlight and dust. One beep sounds and the selected display becomes the default. BAND: Press to listen to the radio when a CD is playing. A beep sounds and CD RDM displays. This feature does not work with playlists. When in random, pressing and releasing either SEEK arrow takes the CD to the next or previous randomized track. Press the artist name and album contained in the tag. BAND: Press to listen to the radio when a CD is playing. Tune in to another channel. Off Air: This channel is not currently in service. Tune to another channel. CH Unauth: This channel is blocked or cannot be received with your XM Subscription package. Unauth: This channel is blocked or cannot be received with your XM Subscription package. See the cell phone manufacturers user guide for Bluetooth functions before pairing the cell phone. If a Bluetooth phone is not connected, calls will be made using OnStar Calling, if available. The system responds with “Ready” followed by a tone. 2. Say “Bluetooth”. The system responds with “Bluetooth ready” followed by a tone. 3. Say “List”. The system lists all the paired Bluetooth devices. The system responds with “Ready” followed by a tone. 2. Say “Store”. The system responds with “Store, number please”. The system will repeat back the digit it heard followed by a tone.The system responds with “Would you like to delete. The system responds with “OK, deleting, returning to the main menu.”. Press and begin speaking to answer the call. Call Waiting Call waiting must be supported on the Bluetooth phone and enabled by the wireless service carrier to work. The system responds with “Resuming call”. Transferring a Call Audio can be transferred between the in-vehicle Bluetooth system and the cell phone. To Transfer Audio to the Cell Phone During a call with the audio in the vehicle: 1. This is used when calling a menu driven phone system. Account numbers can be programmed into the phonebook for retrieval during menu driven calls. Sending a Number During a Call 1. Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective owners. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. An indicator light will illuminate on the headphones when they are on. If the light does not illuminate, the batteries may need to be replaced. See “Battery Replacement”. If the RSE system had been previously in the DVD player mode, pressing the SRCE button on the faceplate or the remote control will switch the RSE system between the auxiliary device and the DVD player. To use the video screen, push forward on the release latch and the screen will fold down. Adjust the screen’s position as desired. When the video screen is not in use, push it up into its latched position. The power indicator light illuminates when the power is on. (Eject): Press to eject a DVD or CD. SRCE (Source): Press to switch between the DVD player and an auxiliary source. Press while a DVD or CD is playing to pause it.Direct sunlight or very bright light may affect the ability of the RSE system to receive signals from the remote control. The format and content of this function will vary for each disc.
