Bruce Swanson 4.0 out of 5 stars The 'no frills' snorkel trip to Molokini hasn't existed for a few years. A couple directions are a bit off. But, the guide was very helpful overall. We used google and yelp ratings for restaurants. We would rather get scores of opinions about a place than those of a small team of guidebook writers but that is not a knock on the guidebook. One important push back to the book. They mention Boss Frog's dive service only long enough to give them a terrible review. We did not do a dive but a snorkel trip with them to Molokini and the crew was super attentive, service-oriented, and did a great and simple trip. Food was adequate, time at the crater and the shore location was adequate, good equipment, etc. Our sample size is one, of course, but it was a very good experience.I read that some readers found this distracting but it did not bother me. 3. The photos are great and break up the narrative in a pleasing way. 4. The website for the book publishes updates to the information. Dislikes (note that my dislikes are mostly due to my purchase of the Kindle version): 1. I'd like the table of contents to break up the restaurant section into more distinct geographical regions and list less in the contents. In the Kindle version the table of contents literally lists all the restaurants being reviewed. This makes for a very long table of contents to scroll through and I have found it to be overwhelming to read through this section in general. Don't get me wrong, there is some method to the madness as far as the organization of the restaurants (by cuisine and some region), I just don't see the need to list them all in the contents.http://mail.emeigroup.com/upload/bruno-vsl-6900-owners-manual.xml If I'm really interested in one particular restaurant I've seen along the way then I can search through the book in the Kindle, and I imagine in the paper version there's an index. I would hope. 2. There are links in the writing to other parts of the Kindle book for things such as photos, maps, or more detailed information on a given topic. I like the links, however, since the table of contents is daunting (due to the lack of brevity discussed above), I'd also like a link to get back to the section I was at. This is an isolated issue to the Kindle version. Overall I've found the guide to be very helpful. If I had it to do over again I would get the book as a hardcopy. Anyhow, if I remember after my trip I'll try to update my review. Happy travels:)If you live in Maui buy this book. Basically just buy this book and go. It is incredible. We did not plan out trip very well but luckily we had this book with us and it made our trip 1000 better. It will tell you every nook and cranny of the island. Where to stop and what to see and things to do. It was very very accurate in terms of descriptions and directions. I would say; it made what may have been a 7 trip a 10!I met one proud local in Hana who literally hates the author(s) for exposing her favorite spots, which is a testament to this books quality. You can tell these guys have fun making this book and basically make it their life's purpose to constantly explore the islands and unlock their secrets. Hawaii is indeed a place of many secrets that you would otherwise miss without having this kind of exclusive information. I want everybody to buy this book but on the other hand I want nobody to. As you're traveling around Hawaii you'll quickly learn who does and doesn't have this book as there are certain places that only this book highlights.https://www.thebiketube.com/acros-3m-selfcheck-system-v-series-manual Unfortunately now when I travel to other places and have buy guide books from companies like Lonely Planet I'm inevitably disappointed in comparison because they're nowhere near as good as the ones these guys produce. We love the local culture--not the tourist stuff, but the real stuff, like the ad hoc Sunday evening drum circle at Little Beach. The drive up to Poli Poli forest. The back trails on Haleakala. The hidden, not-very-accessible pools along the Road to Hana (they usually involve treacherous little hikes up into the rain forest). The places along the northwest shore, like the village below the Kaukini Gallery. Ergo, I didn't think we'd find much in any guide of which we weren't already aware. But Doughty's book proved to be a pleasant surprise. Very well done. There are a few spots he could add. We'll keep them to ourselves.;-) If you're into exploring off-the-beaten-path areas, getting to know the local culture, and something of the history of the areas you're seeing, this guide is highly recommended. Well done.It is very well structured by areas and if you explore an area you have all information in the right order. I like guides with photos and well structured, easy to read, not too wordy text and this is what you get. This allows the reader to judge if it is important. Every page shows that the person who wrote the guide was there and has experienced it. It provides insights when to expect all other tourists to be there as well, gives guide how long things might take to get there, dos and donts. I highly recommend it.Easy to read, clear advice. Really looking forward to using it as my guideWir haben mit diesem Buch unsere Urlaub toll gestalten konnen - es ist zu empfehlen, dies fruhzeitig zu tun, da man sonst von den Informationen vielleicht erschlagen werden konnte und einem die Zeit davon lauft bei der Urlaubsplanung. Lund Wolfe 5.0 out of 5 stars My Maui Trailblazer had some supplementary and detailed info on places like Iao Valley, but it came nowhere close to this book in useful coverage of big and little sights to see and why you would want to see them. The restaurant section alone is worth the price of the book. We went to five restaurants with an ono rating on Maui and Oahu and everyone was outstanding. I must say the bakeries the book recommended on Maui were absolutely pitiful, though.www.comycevalencia.com/galeria/files/canon-speedlite-420ez-service-manual.pdf The author tells you what you need to know to prepare for your Hawaii vacation and has strong opinions on what to see and do, including where to hike and snorkel and the best beaches. You're time in Maui is extremely valuable, because even if you're staying two weeks, you can only do so much. I bought my book a month in advance of the trip and I'm glad I did, because it takes a while to read and absorb the information. Of course you'll have to plan earlier than that for flight, places to stay, etc. The book is easy to read and entertaining and has many color photos to backup their descriptions and put them in perspective. There is also good coverage of offshore islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Molokini. I didn't agree with everything in the book. I have a fair amount of company when I say that Molokini is a pitiful place to snorkel. There are very few fish here. The book recommends many excellent snorkel spots, including Hulopoe Beach on Lanai, which had lots of fish, including schools. You might want to backup their opinions on some activities with the tripadvisor website, which has many visitors' opinions on popular attractions. The complaints I have about the book are actually very minor. It was extremely helpful in extracting the most out of my week on Maui. It's a must have.Unlike some guidebooks, this one isn't afraid to tell you what to avoid as well as what not to miss. The condo recommendations on the accompanying website (there's a password and link included in the hotel section of the book) alone were more than worth the price of the book. (I stayed at the Kihei Surfside, and found it exactly as promised.) The section on beaches in South Maui seemed very well researched and well-documented in terms of how to find them. Another thing I like about this series is that the author is an active scuba diver and provides recommendations for dive operators as well as diving and snorkeling sites.http://zadonskiy.ru/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/162884ff6793b0---campamento-mujeres-jovenes-manual.pdf (I dived with Prodiver out of Kihei, and also found them just as described -- highly recommended.)We bought two books before we headed off to Maui (another on diving), and we found this one quite helpful. We used it for directions on highways, on hikes, to find beaches, to get to the volcano and know how much it would cost, to find restaurants (on a daily basis), to find shopping.just about everything we did merited a look in the book first. Of course, we could have survived without it, but we would have spent more money and missed some really cool stuff. A couple of things you might not realize.nearly everyone else visiting the island has this book, too. Therefore, many of the places described as quiet and quaint aren't. Also, we were told that the natives hate this book so much that they are more likely to break into your rental car if they see it on the seat. I'm not sure about that one, but I wouldn't leave it out. Yes, the book has it's weaknesses, but given the choice, I would definitely pick it up again before heading off to Maui. Aloha! It was a dream come true. This book is, hands down, the best guide to Maui. We had many guidebooks and none of them even came close. These guys shoot straight and give you all of the little details (like turn right at the giant bell-shaped rock) about the places that tourists would normally not see. The locals feel that this book has done more bad than good for Maui, as the tourists armed with this book now visit many of the places that were traditionally kept secret. I'm not saying that I agree with commercializing all of the natural beauty of Maui, but the people with this book are given detailed descriptions of how to see things that the average tourist will not hear about in their Fodor's or Dummies guide book. If you are only buying one book, buy this one.Very comprehensive, current and reliable information. Well worth getting to ensure you don't miss a thing on the island.http://g-ortho.com.br/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/162884ff6b03bf---Campbell-biology-lab-manual-pdf.pdf Groups Discussions Quotes Ask the Author To see what your friends thought of this book,Great investment. (I've heard that the older versions include some places to go not in the newer versions. The authors were pretty generous about devulging secret places to go that were on private property or were environmentally sensitive to more folks exploring. These places were removed from later Great investment. (I've heard that the older versions include some places to go not in the newer versions. These places were removed from later editions.) The author writes with such entertaining and informative style, that it is truly fun to read. As a guidebook, it is invaluable. Because of this book, we were able to enjoy nearly empty beaches unknown to the average tourist and see sights that most visitors miss because they have no idea they exist. Avoid the tour buses and explore Maui on your own with the help of this excellent book. The writing has the perfect balance of passion for the area and just a touch of sass that made planning for our trip to Maui extra fun. Will definitely check out other books for future trips! Not only is the tip content superb, but hilarious as well. We had excellent self guided tours of the North and Road to Hana, found great beaches, eats, and so much more. If you are planning a visit to one of Hawaii's islands definitely get one of these books (they have one for each island). What I liked most about this book is the author was truthful. He didn't get paid to say positive things about a certain restaurant or attraction. If he felt it wasn't worth it he let you know. Highly recommend!cokhixaydung.com/images/uploads/files/canon-speedlite-420ez-manual.pdf For our trip this year I also purchased the Maui Revealed app for use on my iPhone and iPad. You can save your favorites, link to directions for a location, and search for locations by clicking on the interactive map. This is so much easier to use on-the-go. My only comp For our trip this year I also purchased the Maui Revealed app for use on my iPhone and iPad. My only complaint about using both the book and the app this time was that when we were on the road and trying to look up information for a location, I would have to read through several paragraphs of information to find the detail I was looking for. For instance, for a hike, the description for how to find the trailhead was not clearly marked (or bolded). The descriptions are very detailed, but there could be some improvement with the organization of the details. We've bought each of the available guides, and found every single one of them to be very helpful on our vacations to the Big Island, Kauai and Maui. If you are going to any island in Hawaii, don't hesitate to buy any of the guides by this author. It'll save you your precious vacation time, and money. This guy is ruthless on the vendors who take advantage of tourists. You'll be glad you bought it. We've bought each of the available guides, and found every single one of them to be very helpful on our vacations to the Big Island, Kauai and Maui. You'll be glad you bought it. The directions are very accurate, and the book is arranged logically so that the traveler does not have to do a lot of work organizing an itinerary. Also has lots of detail about specific beaches if you are interested in that. Not much on lodging, and not the best restaurant reviews, but otherwise a very useful guide. It was a great help. From advice on how to get around (rent a car) to where to go off the beaten path. I only wish I had more time to explore the various places that were listed. Make sure you bring your hiking shoes everywhere you go, because this book can direct you to side trips everywhere. I read it cover to cover and it was with us throughout our trip. The tips were perfect. We were able to find those private waterfall pools by hiking up a muddy hill like they explained. (walk across the aquaduct kind of directions!) Totally keeping this book for when we go back! I read it cover to cover and it was with us throughout our trip. We were able to find those private waterfall pools by hiking up a muddy hill like they explained. (walk across the aquaduct kind of directions!) Totally keeping this book for when we go back! So bad! But still, a fun book to both flip through and to read. Lots of helpful knowledge embedded in a populist outlook. It's not like Maui can suck; but this book gives some tips on how to make it more fun. So bad! But still, a fun book to both flip through and to read. It's not like Maui can suck; but this book gives some tips on how to make it more fun. Very well organized. I have always found them to be somewhat helpful in both the planning and execution of my vacations. And I feel like this is also the case for this book, but the organization of the chapters leaves a little to be desired, at least for the way my brain likes to break down and compartmentalize things. Does this writer know his stuff. Absolutely! He is a resident of the island and it shows in the detail he provides. So I have always found them to be somewhat helpful in both the planning and execution of my vacations. Absolutely! He is a resident of the island and it shows in the detail he provides. So here's my issue: the book begins with sights in Maui divided into regions (south, west, Hana, etc.). The sights are briefly gone over, but not always in a ton of depth. The reason for this is that the sections following the breakdown of Maui into its various regions are about places to stay, hiking, adventures, and dining. So the author goes into more detail on those things in the subsequent sections. However, as a traveler who intends to stay in West Maui, it would have been more helpful to have all things west Maui in one section. It would have been helpful to have all of that in one section. Yes, the section would be long, but if it were broken down correctly, it would have been handy to just flip to the section you need for the day rather than by hunting everything down piecemeal. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of options, as far as guidebooks go, for Maui. So I do recommend this on that account alone. Also, the writing itself is not bad. The author has a delightful corny streak to him. Just jot down all the information you need in whatever organizational schematic you choose before you leave. I literally don't think there is a better guidebook out there. The author and his wife live in Hawaii and update the books every few years to ensure you are always operating off the latest information.I literally don't think there is a better guidebook out there. The author and his wife live in Hawaii and update the books every few years to ensure you are always operating off the latest information. They then go through specific types of attractions to make it easier to compare all the hiking trails, the snorkeling spots, the adventure activities, and the dining opportunities. The paperbacks are more user friendly than the kindle editions so this nets an easy five stars. Also, check out the associated website for the latest updates and the geo-location apps to provide on-the-go guide services for many of the main attractions. Don't visit Hawaii without getting the relevant guide book(s) for the island(s) you are visiting. I picked up the 6th edition from the library but there are newer ones. Some complain about the organization and I can see how grouping by physical location would be useful. That brings me to the app. It's a great companion and that's a place where the information could be organized in different ways. I spent a lot of time with this book before and during my trip and it was indispensable. I also appreciated it telling me things that were not the best instead of I picked up the 6th edition from the library but there are newer ones. Maui is incredible and if you want to get the most out of it then pick up this book and the app. It's clear that Andew lives there and has in-depth knowledge of the island. Great layout, easy to read, chock full of information. Includes maps, activities, adventures, where to eat (where NOT to eat), where to stay, and much more. Also includes an app with a GPS for the hikes that are in the book. I especially like that the author does NOT announce to restaurants or other places that he is there as an evaluator of their place of business. He tells it like it is with no pressure or obligation to the business. Highly recommend this book Great layout, easy to read, chock full of information. Highly recommend this book. Extremely detailed information of almost every point in the Maui island. This book gives great reviews and provides input on areas and activities that are appropriate for families as well as serious adventure seekers. The author’s injection of humor makes the book entertaining as well as informative. And information on places that are overrated or to be missed is invaluable on vacations where you have a limited amount of time available. I hope he wrote more other than just for Hawaii because these are the best guidebooks I’ve ever come across. You really don’t need another guidebook when planning a trip when you have these. It’s got everything you’ll care to see, and honest reviews about what’s worth your time and what isn’t. Where to eat, stay, what to do and details about how to get there and where to park. THE best. Without it our honeymoon would not have been nearly as adventurous or marvelous. We kept it with us in the car as our trusted companion!
